are you positve you missed? sometimes they dont bleed and if you miss the shoulbder they can run a long way. i had one go 200 yards on me and it only bleed for the first 30. if it was raining on ya you it could be hard to track.

What did the bear do once you shot? Bite or jump or anything? Or did it just run off?

Good luck.

I agree with the others. I lost a bear 5 years ago that I had shot at with a 270 loaded with a 140 grain Barnes bullet. It was a little over 100 yards, just about broadside, and in a clearcut. The bear showed no sign of being hit and walked off into some thick reprod. We found the tracks and followed them as far as possible and spend quite a long time searching for blood. There wasn't the tiniest drop to be found anywhere. So finally I assumed it had been a clean miss, especially knowing that not much will stop a Barnes bullet, and so there had to be an exit hole, and with that there should be a blood trail if the bear was hit.

My brother was out there a couple weeks later and had his dog along. The dog got the scent of something and went right to what was left of a dead bear, which wasn't much. It was apparently nothing but bones and hair scattered all over. This was only about 100 yards from where I had shot the bear. So at least the bear did not go to waste. Coyotes and I believe other bears made a meal of it. And I learned that I should not have assumed the bear wasn't hit just because there wasn't a blood trail.

Yeah they are tough mothers..... I'd go look around some more. My buddies a couple years ago took 3 lung shots before he went down! :yike:

When I shot the bear didnt do anything but look for a second or two.  I put in another round then the bear started to run back into the reprod.  I marked where the bear was and looked for blood in the area for about 25 min couldnt find anything.  It was dark by the time I stoped looking.  I'm going to go back in the area tonight and look again.

Ive been lurking around this forum since I drew my spring bear tag for the monroe unit.  Just registered and this is my first posting.  I'm pretty sure I was on the hillside just east of you when you missed your bear.  Sounded like you were standing right next to me.  Saw you looking for your bear through my binocs.  He run into that swampy area between the reprod and th hillside?  I've seen two nice ones after dark in that area. I'm in the green jeep.  Good Luck.

I dont understand this now.  I've only seen one other truck back there hunting and it was early in the season.  It was two guys hunting out of a toyata I think.
