Got into some great fishing over the weekend..Between us we landed 8 and lost 4.. Had some good family time and made alot of great memories...6 hatchery and 2 natives...both natives were right at about 13 or 14 lbs..
-
Were those fish caught on your trip to Vancouver Island?? I remember you asking about the fishing there awhile back. Nice fish!
MS
-
Actually no they were caught on small rivers by tillamook oregon....lots of boats but lots of fish too....
-
Very nice, love the shoulders on that buck.
-
I'd say that was a good trip. :) Great pics.....
-
Very nice, love the shoulders on that buck.
Call me stupid if you want to but WTF does that mean ??
-
OK stupid... (just kidding...) ....shoulders meaning nice sturdy, strong, solid, ....buck meaning male of the species...atleast the last time I checked....

Thick, heavy front end right behind the neck, I mean head.
Oops, looks like ice spelled it out.

Thanks Iceman, I figured If I invited someone to call me that it would be you LOL !!!
Ok could you please post a photo of a steelhead with crappy sholders so I can see the difference !!!
I have caught quite a few steelhead in my day and have never heard them described that way :dunno: so it would be interesting to see if the ones I have caught have "Nice Sholders".
-
How did you know!!!??? I actually have a photo of a steelie I caught that resembled a submarine sandwich, really long and as skinny as I have ever seen. The guys laughed at me big time, cause I clubbed it anyway and kept it. Anyway, and old 35mm photo, and no scanner here...I know.... excuses...excuses..... Usually when that scrawny fish lands on the bank, guys kick it back in....not grab the camera... :chuckle:
-
Ok so a spawned out steelhead has no shoulders and one that has just recently come in from the sea usually has "nice shoulders" is that about right.
Someday I'll figure out you Washington folks and begin to speak your language, maybe I won't stick my foot so far into my mouth every time I open it !! :chuckle:
-
That would take all the fun out of reading your posts! :chuckle:
Are you kidding, I bet us left coasters would sound pretty stupid back east...!
-
I think we all have the exact goal in mind and that is to "kill stuff and eat it" it's just some take a different approach if you know what I mean.
I'm gonna learn this s@%t if it takes me a couple hours !!!

Good looking pictures Justin! Looks like a fun trip.

Big shoulders means it's thick behind the head. Basically the head looks scrawny relative to it's body. With that buck it's really noticeable because of the sloped head. Almost like a humpy. I've seen that look mostly with native bucks...hatchery fish usually have the skinny genes.
The hen I posted in another post under "Winter Steel" is proportionately thick, but I wouldn't say she had "shoulders".

It's kind of hard to tell, but this buck had shoulders.
