steelhead fishing has been picking up on the columbia around the county line park area. ive been out three times in the last week and have caught four two hatchery and two natives. Ive also seen around fifteen fish caught. IT is alittle early but the fish are here.spinning glows in pink orange or yellow seem to be the color right now. and sand shrimp or prawns in whatever color you like they are hitting pretty much any color that you put on. good luck and good fishing
-
I love me some steel in the columbia...
-
Thanks for the info. Might have to check that out.
-
My next fishing trip will be for some columbia steel. Been thinking about it since last year. Thanks for the report.
-
i went agin this morning and picked up 2 more one 6lb and 8.5lb and saw 4 others caught with one of thoes released
-
Sounds like a lot of fun. Steelhead are next on my list. I got a few spingers last month at drano.
-
Saw 13 fish on today 7 to the bank for 5 rods, i got a 12 and a 10. it is starting...
-
Buddy landed one yesterday and missed several. Time for me to get down there. work sucks!
-
WDFW...........what general part of the Columbia were you on?
-
Lower 40 miles...
-
its been good between the county line park and stella off the rocks or beach if that helps. spinning glows with shrimp has been working .orange pink or green depends on the day good luck
-
Thanks......plan on spending a good amount of time around Kalama....Longview area. Had heard a week or so ago they were picking some up at the county line park. Just getting prepared to hit the river for both steelhead and summer chinook starting just before or on the 16th.
Thanks again.
-
Gary i was fishing even lower in the river on sunday. But I usually fish the rocks above county line. Only been skunked 1 time in 5 years.
-
nice work guys, couple questions if you don't mind... I haven't fished the big C in years. Where is the county line?
also, what kind of rigs are you running here? are you throwing heavy weights (like 4oz? more less?) with the shrimp and letting the boat drift with the current, or are you trolling spinners/hoochie type salmone setup?
I'm going to try like hell to get out this weekend either for sturgeon or salmon.
-
I bank it, i saw a boat have an absolute hayday a few years ago bobber dogging the columbia with shrimp but i have never seen those guys again.
I never know how much weight i have on because i use rocks for weight, and i only fish 10-20 feet off the bank, sometimes closer. Sunday i could see my upper bead but couldn't see my spin-n-glo so i knew i was fishing and caught fish within 10 feet from the bank. I use a 10'6" rod and i wasn't casting, just hanging the rod out and dropping my gear. water is real high and they are hugging the bank.
-
i fish just like he does and rocks do work good and are free
-
nice ;)
sometimes the best things are the simplests things. puts meat in the freezer
-
Have any of you guys been out in the last couple days. Looks like the river came up some more. I'm thinking about friday

-
nice work. how long does the run usually last? I've never fished the C for anything but STurgeon, but I think I'll try to make it down this weekend and see if I can hook into a couple steelies.
-

what about drano lake? i heard they were catching well in there?
-
We went 2-5 with one of the 5 being a king. Daughter landed her first steelhead. Learned something new today. The "crew" were using a sliding sinker set up that allowed it to slide between the two riggings. We switched and it worked, but why? Can't figure it out.
-
Headed out in a bit. Any pointers.Gonna launch at Willow Grove and do a combo trip.
Thanks,
HntnFsh

Well today was way better for me. I landed 4 steelhead and one salmon with 2 steelhead and 1 salmon released. All the fish i caught were on pink watermellon #2 spin glows with sand shrimp sent. I was fishing between mile markers 47 and 48 on the columbia off the rocks. good fishing everyone the water is clearing up and the fish are biting . All the fish that i caught were between noon and 5 oclock.
-
We fished lower in te river and had to deal with crap all day. Couldn't really fish much. Got down to to the hole @ 5 left @ 2. Worst dayon te river in 5 years. Not even a take down.
Should have hit my normal hole.
-
as for myself i got skunked like you not even a take down the river is dirty and high and the wind was blowing like crazy. im going to start salmon fishing starting wednesday.ill let you guys no how im doing ill be fishing between longview and kalama.good luck fishing guys
-
It was brought up to me that i shouldnt be telling people right where i am fishing. and after i thought about it for a few minutes. I have to agree that i made a mistake in doing that. If not for myself for the other people who fish in the same spots that i do. Out of respect for those people i wont say exactly where i am fishing anymore. And i will say im sorry to the other people that fish that area. And if i made anyone mad that was not my intention.
-
Gary you didn't make me mad i was just stating that if you like fishing where you have been fishing i would not post the exact spot. You are fine... Keep on keepin on.
-
Wouldn't sweat it man. Those spots aren't a secret. Everyone knows those fish run the shoreline and all ya need is a decent place to set up camp and wait em out. Some guys are just too uptight:)
We'll be down on wed chasing salmon. Thinking we are going to try and dodge some of the crowds and beach the boat. Should be good. Seen as many salmon caught friday as we did steelhead.
-
i went out today didnt get there until eleven oclock and the fish were there. everyone that was there caught at least 1 fish i caught my limit and released 2 wild fish i saw at least 10 fish caught with at least 5 lost as soon as the tide started out the fish went crazy. all this happened in a 3 hr period most of the fish were caught on orange tiger#2 spin glows with shrimp some were caught on pink watermellon # 2 spin glows with shrimp. good luck guys. its time to put some steelhead on the bbq.

saturday the fishing was great i caught a limit plus 1 released. steelhead but i loaned my sister my extra g loomis 1024c salmon rod with a calcutta 400b on it. she didnt secure the pole holder very well and now a big steelhead or salmon owns my rod the fish hit very hard and in the river went my rod there goes 475.00. but we live and learn dont we.
-
That sucks, sorry to hear about your rod. Last year at Drano my buddy and I had just started fishing and he turned around to mess with the anchor in the corner of the boat and I was at the front of the boat. I heard his rod hitting the side of the boat and he turned around just in time to see his G-Loomis 1021 go into the water. I really thought he was gonna cry that night. :'( He ended up buying a new rod the next day because he just couldn't fish with a pole that didn't have the sensitive tip that his Loomis had.
-
Don;t mean to thread jack but losing a rod sucks. Went to longview for xmas and on the way home stopped at yard birds and they were giving away free poisetts so wife came out with like five. No room so layed 2 loomis poles on the top put the plants in and as driving down I 5 heard something them another something and said what was that noise and my boy said I don;t know but that had a reel on it. Pulled over and looked back and saw pieces all over the road. I just hate those poinsetts.
-
sorry to here about your guys rods yes it sucks for sure. well today was a strange day. the fishing was great. there was 9 steelhead caught between 3 of us but guess what all 9 were native fish. I have never seen 9 fish in a row all be native. i guess its good to see so many native fish but it would have been nice to take 1 home. theres a gal thats new to steelhead fishing thats been fishing with us she has only caught 1 hatchery fish befor today. today she caught her best fish so far a nice 12 lb native fish she was smiles from ear to ear. and i beleave she is hooked for life.
-
Any recent reports? Taking the kids down tomorrow. Hoping they are able to up their hook to land ratio. Been letting em do it all alone and they are having a lil trouble with the keeping the pole up thing:) They get so disappointed in themselves when they lose a fish. Feel bad for em, but they gotta learn the hard way.
Thanks
Kris

You have any pics of your set up? Never gone for steelhead off a bank and other than a spin-n-glow, not sure how to get it together.
Thanks

Try this page. Longer leader in clear water, shorter leader in murky water. Long for me is 42-48" Short is 24-30"
