Title: Trapping year round.
Post by: Kain on June 05, 2010, 09:42:11 PM
 :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Been slaughtering the starlings lately but noticed that every morning I would have less birds in the mulch pile than the night before.  I set out my cage trap and put a bird in it but the next morning the bird was gone and the trap was not triggered.  There was a pretty well worn trail from a gap in my fence but it was too small for a opossum or raccoon, it must be a rat.  I set the trap in the trail and added a few more birds to the pile.  Second night out and got one.

Its WAR!!!   :chuckle: :chuckle: Got another one.  Its funny I have had traps set up around the rabbit hutch since I got them thinking that the hay and food pellets would attract the rodent.  Have not caught or seen rats or mice until I started killing starling.

Number 2

Reminds me of my place.  I noticed some rat poop in the dog kennel one morning so I proceeded to trap it every night and I caught at least one every night.  We live right up against a greenbelt in the city and I think they nest there and head out into town at night fall.  I eventually stopped because the traps were starting to add up but I must have trapped around 30.  The biggest was HUGE, should of taken a pic, I showed the better half and now she wont go in the back at night  :chuckle:

30?!!!  :yike:  Maybe I should go get more traps.   :chuckle:  The good news is that they all look pretty clean.  No fleas or growths or anything.

Oh man Im all over that.  Gonna have to craft me a wicked spear gun.  Im telling you Im gonna look hella cool in my rabbit skin loin cloth too.  I was worried about wearing white rabbit fur and standing out in the bush but then it dawned on me that loin cloths should be worn fur side in.  I probably dont have to explain why to you guys.  ;)  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Dont have my slingbow or speargun made yet so I had to opt for the pellet rifle.  2 yard shot to the head.

now see I woulda just dropped a hammer on it  would not have thought to go find pellet gun just grab the handy dandy mini sledge hammer works great on rats

Hammer, shovel or stomping would have worked but I have the traps set inside my compost cage so the dogs cant get into them.  I wasnt about to reach in there and grab that trap with a live rat on it.  :chuckle:  The pellet gun is real handy by the back door, ready to drop those starlings at a moments notice.  :chuckle:

Last nights carnage.  Two of them were caught WHILE I was setting traps.  I went and bought some more traps and didnt get a chance to set them until after dark.  I was setting my third trap when I heard one go off.  I just thought it was a misfire since I just set it.  So I went over to reset and sure enough there was a rat in it.  :yike:  Reset that one and finish the rest of them and as I was walking back to the house I heard another trap go off this time with some squeeks.  Right on.  Found another rat in the same trap as before.  I stuck my pocket knife into the rat to finish it and reset again.  Within 5 minutes of coming out of the package that trap had already got two.  Woke up to one more in a different trap.  DOMINATION!!!!  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Damn you are slaying em.. I mark my traps with a mark for each kill, slash mark style. Also if you want all instant neck kills, cut a rubber band in half and tie it to the little metal wedge. If you use peanut butter on it, just a little bit, they try to eat the rubber band, there teeth get stuck, and they try to pull there head back......WHAMMO. I did read that it is so bad there that you are just setting them empty which is crazy.

The Kain reaper, have you thought about getting a flute and parading them out of town,,,seems I heard that worked once before,Hamelin I believe..perhaps Olympia would be a good location, plenty O rats there in a big house

Yep just setting them baitless.  The trails they are making are well worn so with a little funneling and blocking I have the pan set right in the path.  I am going to make one of those water bucket traps and see how it does also.  I will bait that with peanut butter.

The neighbor keeps a blackberry bush on the fence line which is where they are living.  I really like the blackberries also so I just find the little trails through the weeds coming from it.

Using weasel boxes to set traps around the yard.  Had to find a way to keep the dogs, chickens, and kids out of them and they work great.

I hate rats. When I was trapping in Oregon they seemed to be everywhere. At least anywhere there was any kind of a structure like a bridge or old building.
Caught a beaver one time down by Sand Lakes that managed to die with about half of it out of the water. The rats ate it's entire face off. Couldn't make a coon set without catching them. Yuk!

Yea they are nasty critters.  My wife hates them and wont go around the shed anymore.  I wish I would have had a nice digital recorder for the rat in the live trap.  It was screaming like crazy whenever I got near the cage.  I wonder if they would make good live bait for bobcats?   :chuckle:

I had a neighbor above me in Coos Bay, OR that would shoot them off her bird feeder.  That 75 yo lady was a good shot.  Thank goodness she used the shot rounds since her birdfeeder was on my side of her kitchen window.

Surprised they are not running off with the traps I have always had to tie them down when using the wood traps. Gave up using them when they started pulling them selves out of the wooden traps so switched to Victor 1 1/2 steel traps and never lost another rat. The ones caught alive were dispatched with .22 bird shot hate the little *censored*s!

I am trying the live traps because I have had a few traps sprung with nothing in them.  Hard to believe that they could survive one but who knows.
