Title: Special App Ewe?
Post by: MtnMuley on June 08, 2010, 04:29:54 PM: I was just wondering for those who who put in for a Ewe tag, what they plan on doing with the animal. For eating? For the wall? Population control? This isn't intended to bash those who applied or criticize, but to find out what they planned on doing with the tag. :)

I was thinking it would be a fun and relatively easy hunt, no different than hunting for a ram, really. And I thought it would be a good opportunity to try bighorn sheep meat. So that was my main goal in applying for a ewe sheep hunt: the meat. Plus I just thought it would be an enjoyable hunting experience.

Until I went to submit my application, and saw there was only one hunt available, and it is a 7 hour drive, and I know nothing about the unit. Not worth the time and/or expense to me, so I just applied for the point. Maybe in the future they will have more options for the ewe sheep hunts.

All right, I was just taking a friendly jab. The ewe would be a fine hunt. I am not knocking it one bit.

Just went for the point right now until they give out some tags closer to home. I think they gave out some tags in the Yakima Canyon last year but they pulled them this year.

You made me look. There were 5 permits for Selah Butte last year. I'm guessing they eliminated them this year due to the pneumonia outbreak in the sheep over there.

Well, you haven't actually paid for the tag yet. So if you do draw it you could just not pay for it and let it go to the alternate.

No. I think that, the spring bear, and the fall turkey were the only ones I opted out on.

Is the big horn prime habitat at it's carrying capacity? With the limited number of big horns out there, why have one of the baby makers harvested? The only thing that would make sense is to allow such a hunt knowing that the $$$ for permits would do more good to the species than one ewe. But, if that is the case, I think it would make sense for WDFW to point out which ewe should be harvested. That way the 2 year old is spared and the 8 year old can be harvested. Same experience, crappier meat but very little removal of productive life.

But from what I've heard a lot of the sheep herds meet or exceed the target population. And what history has shown is that stockpiling sheep is not a good idea because of disease and such. So the only choice is relocation or harvesting. That's just my best guess.
