Still drying. They had a large degree of discoloring from the beetle festival. I'm not a pro. When the paint dries it doesn't look as shiny.
Should be able to get it on a plaque later this week. :dunno:

yeah looks like you did a fine job

My neighbor is making plaques. I asked if he could get one of those that makes an angle.

those are good looking forsure..bucklucky I think had some mounted on that style that looked great..Not sure if he orders them or makes them
-
Dang Ray, your reloading bench gets used for many things. Mine does too. :chuckle:
Nice set of Horns. Should look real cool on a plaque.
-
Ray did you use Burnt Umber?
-
Yes, burnt umber. I did a patch yesterday and let it dry. Looked good to me. Takes a long time to dry.
-
Ray I would go back over it with some Black Umber. They are a little to brown.
Here is a quick pic that I have. I didn't color these. Only thing I did was touch up the base to match the rest of the horn.

Black does look good. I have to disagree that they are too brown. In fact they are now much darker than the horns originally were. I've seen a few pronghorns on here that I felt were too black on the horns. No discredit as the taxidermists were great.
I'm going to wait until they dry before I decide if I will make another pass at painting them.
-
Are you using acrylic paint? I have a buck I'd like to re-color like that. Looks pretty nice and easy to do.
-
It's an oil paint. It is easy to do. Therefore if I want to recolor again it should not be too difficult.
-
Oil Paint. You can pick them up at most craft stores. Micheals and Jo-Anns should carry them.
-
Thanks - apply with a soft brush for hte heavy textured areas and maybe wipe to blend into the tops?
-
I think that could work. I've just used a small and narrow brush. Getting into the grooves seemed an easier task with a smaller brush.
-
Looks very nice!!!!
-
I had the paint dry. They do look a bit too brown. But I am going to go with it that way anyhow. I don't really care.
Thanks for the nice comments.
-
Ive never painted any of my pronghorn horns. Mine are all done natural. How did your lose color Ray?
-
It seems like the horns got wet somehow when the beetles were chewing on the flesh. So they laid wet for a long time is my guess. That caused a great deal of discoloration on one particular horn.
-
Gotcha. I always swetted the horns off before I bugged the pronghorns . Makes sence to me now.
-
I used black shoe polish on the ones I did....the kind you turn upside down and squeeze with the foam tip on them (if that makes sense). It was easy to apply and I think they look good. Actually, half way thru this post I did a double check, they are blacker than the taxidermy mount I was given.
Here is a pic of the ones I did for reference. :dunno:

Ray did the pronghorn sheaths get mold on them? I have found when horns or antlers develop mold when allowed to sweat that will discolor them.
-
Here's my 1st attemp & a crappy cell phone pic, The horns were also kinda brown & dry. I put some mink oil on em.
-
That looks nice. I am getting one that hangs off a wall at an angle like that.
-
Looks great Ray! Pronghorn Euros look cool.
-
yeah that mount looks nice hope we draw mt and i can do one like that
-
Hey Ray --- AAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHH! AAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHH! Can't keep from laughing everytime I hear that sound in my head... BTW- Horns look great....
-
Cohoho, Yeah that son of a gun just realized he had been tagged and I am sure he felt that sting! LOL
I decided to leave the horns dark brown. We used my friend's drill press and put dowels onto this mounting plaque setup which I picked up from my neighbor. I could either leave it as a table mount or turn the dowel and hang it on the wall. I drilled a couple of small holes near the base of the skull and set some drywall screws down to hold the skull to the plaque.
All done..
