So I've hunted Western WA my whole life (GMU 648) and in the next few weeks I'm moving over to Pullman. I modern rifle hunt for deer, bear, and sometimes elk. I've hunted turkey a few times over by Ellensburg and love it so its something I would like to do again this spring. I went on the WDFW website and it looks like in South East WA they have some wilderness areas and wildlife areas. Does anyone hunt down there? Any information would be great! Thanks

Welcome to the site. swing by the intro thread and give a little info about yourself, you will find some people on here to be very helpful if they know a little about the person asking for help or info on helping. Me...I would go up north to hunt the whitetails and elk up there.....less people.

There's good hunting close to Pullman. If you go knock on some doors and introduce your self and ask permission, you might be able to hunt close to home. :twocents:
-
Thanks for the input guys! Any tips on hunting muleys and white tails? I'm used to hunting thick timber for black tails :dunno:
-
Walk out your door, pick a direction. Go that direction and knock on farmers doors. There's whities and mulies all over the place down there. Well, maybe not mulies all over but they are there to be found.

You should learn about elk hunting in the Blues.
I hear there's lots of elk there.
:chuckle:

Yea start knockin on doors and ask for permission to hunt coyotes. Not everyone is friendly to what they call coasters but many of them will let you hunt yotes. Good way to build up some good local friendships. Lots of good mulies down by the Snake, Hope you got a good spottin scope cuz it is easy to see deer over a mile away once you get up ontop of some of the breaks and hills.Dont forget the pheasants lots of good birds round there. Good luck.

I would check out some of the country to the north if I was you. Ask for permission prior to hunting season when farmers aren't busy. I have exclusive access to 150k+ acres in the Palouse - I asked how come I get the privilege, the response was "because you asked before the season opened."
-
As someone born and raised in the Palouse, I would love to know where this 150K of "exclusive" access is? I can assure you that there is no such thing.
Knock on some doors and you will find some access. The best ground is hunted by friends and family/neighbors, first. If you do get access, you won't be the only one. Tons of deer and few good bucks.
-
wheat farmers like coyotes they eat the mice so that might not be a good approach I have had several farmers tell me specifically not to shoot the yote's. They also hate whitetails.
-
I went to school in Pullman and hunted deer there in the early to late 90's and shot a bunch of bucks. I'll send you a PM.
-
hey coug, ill be moveing to pullman august first, and ill be in the same position you are in, so if you need someone to partner up with let me know.

Not all of them. Most I've run into hate yotes and like to save the deer for friends/family like jj said. I used to have access to thousands of acres but as the land changes hands or goes to lease only I've lost most of my access. Still have one great piece for deer and quite a few for yotes.

i usually hunt around Prescott. usually see a good amount of deer. pretty much get a deer every year, always see legal bucks. saw a cow elk last year over there which surprised me. my dad has gotten a good 5x5 white tail out of there and a really nice mule deer over there.

Yup.
There's no deer in the breaks and no elk in the Blues :P

Thanks for info everyone! And "the1rod" none of my roommates hunt so it would be cool to partner up and see what we can find!
-
You lucky *censored*s! When I was at Wazzu, this internet thingy did not exist and it was hard to find hunting buddies and to learn about the area... :'(
-
Maybe it's time for you to go back to school!! :chuckle:
-
Nah, I heard they can't have "Floor Parties" anymore.... :chuckle:
-
Not like you have never broke the rules when it comes to a party!! :chuckle:
-
Good point! :chuckle:
-
Spend a lot of time knocking on doors, and you will have more places to hunt that you need.
-
Where should you hunt?? That's easy. IDAHO!! It's close and the tags are OTC. :chuckle:
-
Looks like I'll be knockin on some doors! Maybe i'll have a farmers daughter in one of my classes :chuckle:! I also checked out the GoHunt thing on the wdfw website, it seems like Asotin has a decent amount of public land, but who knows how accurate that thing is! I'll have to go explore once I get over there
