Title: Observatory Tag
Post by: TikkaT3-270Shortmag on June 21, 2010, 03:01:29 PM
Ive been lucky enough to draw observatory.  I picked up my maps.  I cant wait to lace the boots up and get to scouting.  I would like to see if anyone on here has hunted it before and has pictures of anything?? I would just like to know experiences some have had with this hunt.  Im not asking for hunting advice or places to go just want to hear some experiences and see some pics.  Thanks in advance.

my family has hunted elk (rifle) in the manashtash and observatory units for 20+ years. It's been rapidly getting alot more gates, but if you're not afraid to go off the road you can see a decent ammount of big bulls. What tag exactly did you pull? i got the quality hunt observatory.

thats a good tag, ive seen some guys with some healthy sized bulls and a woman with probably the biggest bull ive seen in the unit. We see alot of big bulls, its a pretty nice hunt you just need to find a good look out point and let the 100's of guys looking for a spike kick the big boys around right in front of you. It's an extremely densely hunted unit.

I've hunted that 22 years wish I drew that!  Lots of bulls but tons of people in rifle season.

If I'm not mistaken a 400" muzzy bull was taken out of that unit last year.

I got drawn for the 340 342 quality bull, So I will be going in just after the archery season. I'm not sure how the whole hunting in the rut thing is going to go. So if you archery boys could maybe give me some tips it would be greatly appreciated.

congrats on the tag....last time i hunted there was 3 years ago when i drew an any bull tag for archery season.  called in a couple and saw a decent 5 point and killed a small 6 pt that someone had arrowed the previous year in the neck.  not a monster but still cool with a bow.  was able to drag it out whole as it died about 200 yards off the road.  we hunted above buck meadows and saw an awful lot of elk that trip and someone in our party also killed a cow up there.  nice place to hunt as we were always into elk.  also saw a lot of nice 3 and 4 point mulies but couldn't get close enough for a shot

Post by: idahoelkhunter300wby on July 24, 2010, 08:15:32 PM
Would any of you guys be willing to share some info on where to look for a cow? My 62 year old dad has drawn a muzzeloader cow tag for unit 340. We are not familiar with this unit. We have hunted the Colockum for 40 years but it isnt worth going up there any more. We arnt asking for honey holes just interested in some starting points that we can unload our quads or bikes and start scouting in September.
Thankyou for any advice
Keith

Most of that unit, quads are not allowed on the roads. Bikes are, but they need to be street legal.

In Sept,  keep your quads on your rig!  Bow hunters would appreciate that!  Use them where they are legal and no issues.  Just sucks to have a nice elk walking towards you 3 miles behind a gated road and have some yahoo come screaming up on a quad.  Even though the signs are posted no motorized vehicles..... not saying you would do that tho,  just that it seems to happen a lot over in those units.

Go to this website http://www.elknut.com/ (http://www.elknut.com/).  Then buy the following CD's. at this link.  http://stores.elknut.com/Detail.bok?no=48 (http://stores.elknut.com/Detail.bok?no=48) Whenevery your in your vehicle listen to the CD's.  Start with CD one and once you've mastered that one move on to the next one etc.  Listen to all of the CD's multiple times right up into your elk season.  Also buy some of the calls that he has and practise along with the CD's.  Also buy his playbook at this site http://stores.elknut.com/Detail.bok?no=140 (http://stores.elknut.com/Detail.bok?no=140) that way you can also read about it.  It's VERY helpfull.

His CD's don't really tell you how to blow on a call.  Instead they break down what each elk sound means in "Elk Talk."  That way when you start calling elk you aren't just making random sounds instead you're actually talking or having a conversation with the elk.  He also gives a bunch of different calling scenarios that I can say from personal experience work AWSOME!!!!

I can guarantee you this.  If you do your homework and find out where the elk are prior to your season.  And you are in an area where there are elk.  And you practise and learn what Paul has to teach you.  YOU WILL call in a bull.  Now whether or not you hit the thing is up to you  :chuckle:  Myself and others could talk elk calling till we're blue in the face on here but it wouldn't help you all that much.  Buy the CD's and you'll instantly gain ten years of elk calling/hunting experience.  I promise!!!

by the end of bow season these elk have there cows and are reluctant to leave them , satilite bulls will come in . scout the area and cover ground with a rifle shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks, I will talk to my dad about picking those up. We've got some calls already that I think we will end up using. Just need to practice using them, but it sounds like those Cd's will really help us learn what we need to quick. Thanks for all the help an information guys!

Colockum, I have heard statements like this before. How do you think these methods would work for Roosies on the coast that are under public land pressure?
Title: Re: Observatory Tag
Post by: colockumelk on July 29, 2010, 03:17:16 PM
I would say they would work pretty well.  Paul aka ElkNut1 on here only hunts public ground in Idaho.  So the tactics he developed was based on his experience hunting and calling elk on public land.  As far as the "Elk Language" I'd imagine Roosie's speak the same language as Rocky Mountain elk do.  Just maybe with a British Accent :chuckle:

jim Horn has some good techs too , don't know how well these work post rut , but elk are social animals and talk year round .

So I should end my bugle with an "EH"? :chuckle: Seriously though, I would love to see anyone actually call in a Roosie on public land. I have hunted the rut for the last 5 years and only called in three or four and those were in areas that I know there were only a very few people as I hiked in several miles to the areas. In a public setting, what do you think the best way to get a bull to come in is?

I used to be the same way.  I watched the Primos guys and other guys call and I did what they did.  I got some elk to come to me which in hind sight was probably just luck.  I say luck because while my bulges sounded great I had no clue what I was saying in elk language.  I'd hear an elk bugle and I'd throw out a call.

After listening and taking Paul/Elknut's advice from his CD's I learned how to "speak" the language of elk.  So instead of hearing a bugle or cow call and answering back with what I thought sounded good; I now answer back with what that bull or cow wants to hear.  I now know what that elk is saying to me and I know what that elk expects or wants to hear back.  Its as simple as that.  I would say that if you buy his 4 CD pack and listen to them and learn from them and take head to that advice you will have a MUCH MORE productive year this year.  I got his CD's in mid August last year and last year I called in more  bulls and had more bulls called in for me than the last 3 years combined.  And I contribute 70% of that to Elknuts CD's and 30% to me for keeping an open mind and willing to learn and follow his directions.  I PROMISE you that you will call in more Rossies than you usually do.  At the very least you'll learn a bunch about elk behavior, their rut patterns and a bunch about elk calling.  It's well worth it.

Wow, what a great tag. I have been hunting that unit for quite a while, unsuccessfully i might add. All I ever see for elk are cows and big bulls, never a spike there are a lot of hunters running around in that unit. good luck. I like the North Fork of the Manastash area myself.

1morebuck  there are guys on this website that call in Roosie's on public land EVERY YEAR and kills bulls every year.  Like I said buy ElkNuts Bugling For Bulls 1 and 2, Calling for Cows and his Worse than Wolves CD's.  You WILL learn alot.  You have NOTHING to lose.  I do not work for him and I have never met Paul.  I am just speaking from experience.  I gained alot of knowledge and my game has been dramatically stepped up.

You ask what the best way to get a bull to come in is....  There is too much to explain.  Like I said before.  Just buy his CD's and keep an open mind and try his tactics.  They work.  Others can attest to that.  If you want to know more just PM the guy.  He's very nice and knowledgable.

That being said, there is no BEST way to get a bull to come in.  The BEST way to get a bull to come in is to REACT to what he is doing.  Listen to what he says and then call according to what he expect to hear and what he wants to hear.  Also from my experience last year Paul's Level III threat is about as deadly as you can get.
