Wow, I can't believe it, I drew a sheep tag. I didn't even consider that a possibility. I picked Tieton because I have hunted that area for deer and elk many times and really enjoy the area. After doing a little reading here on the sheep forum I see that the consenses is that Tieton rams run smaller, I wonder why that is? Anyways, I am going to have a great time!!

Congrats :IBCOOL: How many points did you have?

Nice, I drew the Selah Butte Sheep tag after 13 years!!!!! I have not hunted that area but will start scouting soon. Do you know anything about it. I have been in the Teiton area in the past and I know it will not be hard to locate the sheep.
-
congratulations on your tag as well :hello:
-
Congratulations to you guys that drew sheep tags - that's absolutely great. I look forward to seeing pictures this fall. And maybe a scouting report for me next year. :)
-
Congratulations you two on drawing sheep tags. It is a great experience! Enjoy every part of the hunt as those tags come few and far between.
Boon if you want some info PM me and I'll give you the run down. I hunted it in 06 my self and have helped on three other tags. It is a great hunt.
Those rams aren't known to be "smaller" you just have to find one of the older rams that are there.
Energy Retro,
You too have a good tag. Those sheep are doing well even with the disease out break in the canyon as it didn't seem to effect that side of the hwy. There are some private ground issues but nothing that you cant work around.
If either of you want to talk you can contact me.

I've posted some nice Tieton ram pics on here in the past. There are a couple I sure wouldn't mind.
-
Right on!

Congrats BOOM. I was one of the lucky SOB's that had that tag last year. You won't be disappointed. Just put the word out and you'll have more people than you know finding sheep for you. Worked for me. I'll keep my eyes open when I'm up that way. Good luck!
-
Way to go Boom...
Nice to see so many members get some great draws. I am looking forward to all the tales, successful or not (but hopefully successful)!

Congrats on the tag. I hunted Cleman Mt with my dad a few years back, it will be a great time.
-
I just got back from elkstuffers place to see what true trophy rams look like, OMG, I can honestly say I had no idea how big a trophy ram is!! What an eye opening that was. Thanks Ric I needed that.:hunt2:
-
it should be a great hunt for you look forward to seeing the pics and following story and hunt
-
Congrats on the tag. That is awesome! One of my friends got lucky enough to get the same tag so we may see you up there. Good luck and I hope you get a nice one.
-
Thanks man, my biggest fear right now is I will overestimate the size and drop a small one. :ACRY: Come August 1st I am going to be doing a lot of bear hunting and field scoring. Hopfully I will have a nice camera by then so I can post some nice pictures. Pass congrats to your buddy, probably will see you on the mountain.

LOL Steve. That's the first stop I made too. Ric has a pile of rams up there to compare to. There's bigger rams up there than the one I got but I'm more than satisfied with him. I know that one went in the high 170's. From what I heard anyway. Still haven't seen a pic. Here's a link to the gallary of my ram. (3 pics) Pat

Mr Boom,
Best of luck on you hunt.
Looking forward to the pictures and story.

Congrats. you will get a sheep. My wife's nephew had that tag last year. I went with him and he shot a 169 inch ram. There are a ton of sheep in this unit. Here are some places to start. Up Oak creek to where they used to feed the elk. Both sides of the road. Don't just glass from the road. you can't see the North side from the road. There was a bigger ram about a mile up from the highway on the south side. but we could not find him. We got this ram in NPK canyon - about 1 1/2 miles up the Oak Creek road from the highway. Also glass the cliffs on along the highway in the elk feed pens there are pull outs on the highway. This area is open during sheep season. Just below there is Tims Pond. Park in there and glass the hills across the highway. Other good spots. From the Y to Horseshoe bend. Park in the pull outs and glass across the river. And here is a hot spot. Go up to Horse shoe bend and park in the wide pull out on the left. Across the river is a big pinnacle rock on the left of Cougar canyon. On the bottom left of the rock is a big gray dirt spot and a cave in the rock. This is a mineral lick. The sheep love this spot. They will go inside the cave and eat the dirt. I saw 9 rams there this spring with one ram monster there. Might check the boundaries, but I think this is in the unit?? There are good sheep numbers above Oak creek along the highway. Clear up to Trout Lodge. But the higher you get, the more timber. From Oak creek to where they are building the new bridge is all good.
Look at a lot of rams to learn what a big one looks like. DON 't shoot a dink. It is a long season so be patient. good luck.

where are the pics of the 169 ram?

Ya, the bio said 8 1/2 yrs. I know that there are some big old boys in the Tieton, but rams do seem to grow faster on Clemens. I saw another Clemans ram at the game dept. that had almost 1" bigger bases than my ram and at least 2 yrs younger. Coach, I saw that stud up at Rics but I wouldn't beat myself up too much. The limpy ram you got is way cool! The best advice I got for BOOM is it's your tag and hunt it the way you want to hunt it. Take my hunt and coach's hunt for example. It was a little disappointing to have my hunt over as quickly as it started. It was hard for me to shoot on the first day but I had a goal and I knew this ram was something that I'd be more than satisfied with. Coach passed a great ram and never had the opportunity to go back and get it. But he still ended up with a great trophy and he got a lot more boot time than I did which has a value of it's own. The hunt is what you want to make of it. Bottom line, do what makes YOU happy, and just have fun. That's why your there. Happy hunting.
-
Well said Pat!
Something else I can add to all of you sheep hunters out there: Make sure that all of your friends and family can judge sheep horns or tell them to stay quiet. When you get right down to the heat of the moment and you have 2 people, one in each ear telling you to shoot, it usually always turns out with a subpar ram on the ground. I've seen too many unhappy hunters come into the shop with rams that they were not happy with. It's a shame to see on a OIL hunt. :twocents:

Great advice everyone! A guy at work told me a sad story, sad to me anyways, he knows a guy from Olympia that got a tieton tag. He told him to drive up oak creek road and glass the hillsides and he should spot some sheep. Well, the guy drives over from Olympia and starts up the road and right off the bat spots some sheep on his left so he slows down to take a look and notices a ram on his right side, seeing that it has a nice curl he drops it! Just minutes into his hunt he is done and tickled pink! :bash: He must of thought you should hunt them like blacktails on the west side. I think I will leave my gun unloaded! :yike:
I will not shot one on the first day I will not shot one on the first day I will not shot one on the first day I will not shot one on the first day I will not shot one on the first day I will not shot one on the first day I will not shot one on the first day I will not shot one on zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Never shoot a ram that you cant really get a scope on and judge , IE Limpy Ram.

I would have shot "Limpy" over any ram I've ever taken in. You will be hard pressed to see let alone shoot a ram 11+ years old anywhere. That makes him a very unique trophy in my book. Coach, you know how excited I was about your ram! That ram lived through it all for over 11 years and it took a hard hunt and some luck to finally bring him down.
-
How about considering your competition? You have scouted and you know there is only one good ram in the bunch.
There are 2 other permit holders and the auction hunter and the raffle ticket hunter all in your permit area.
That is what happened to me. If you take your time, and what happens if the other four don't?

TAG SOUP? Oh ##it I am shooting the first nice ram I see!!!
-
By the way, before I jump to conclusions, you did get one right? :dunno:
Did I mention that I am going to try for one with a bow the first 3 weeks? :archery_smiley:
-
Yes.

Boom a little advise is enjoy your hunt and take it all in . I passed a ram on the first day thats know sitting in elk stuffers shop , he's a stud . But my hunt would have been over on the first day . the second day I shoy at 3 408 with my bow took seven yards off the shot and still shot right over him . Don't believe the ark in that steep crap he probibly is a state record archery ram 165 ish. the third day after seen most of the rams in the unit along withy two days before the season , I shot limpy the only ram we didn't get the scope on for twenty minutes , he took off and at 300 yards running ( with a limp there tough to judge) he was toast.these rams can be decieving because a tight curl can look bigger than he is , look for a ram that drops below his jaw and then makes the curl, he'll score well. good luck .by the way I really dont regret passing the 172 ram on the first day .
