I am just curious who ended up with a tag...
-
I am also curious how many points it took you to "earn" the tag.
We have a group of 10 hunters, with points ranging from 4 to 13, who all put in individually, and none of us were drawn! :bash: :'( :'(
-
I have 7 points and did not draw. I was surprised by that a little; not too much though since I haven't drawn it yet.
-

We put in for a group hunt and got 3 tags. I don't think I had any points. Our group leader might have though. How do I check my points?
-
My buddy drew it this year with 5 points for archery.
-
I drew it with 4 pts. And have been seeing tons of big bulls too.
-
Back in the 90's before points I would put in there. Up in the William O you could call in some BIG BULLs, but no tag. :bash: Now the outfitters and every other bowhunter hunts up there. >:(
-
That is what I was afraid of... a lot of folks drawing with 4 and 5 points or less. I am not sure why I asked when I have 7 and didn't draw. I knew I beat the odds! :'(
-
I've drawn this tag twice ( under the old system ) , both times with 4 points. I will have 3 points next year and it will be interesting to see when I draw again under the new system. It sounds like the people that drew all had 3-5 points that I talked to. Good luck with this tag if you drew this year. Mike
-
Most of the guys in my group have 5 points and non drew in this unit, including me. I wonder why those with fewer points drew and not the people with more points.
-
My Dad, hunting partner and I all drew archery Goose Prairie tags. We put in as a group and we all had 6pts. I've been there a few times but just camping with the fam. I plan on going and learning as much of the area as I can. If someone would like to send some wisdom my way it would be greatfully appriciated. Thanks Shane
-
I have 9 and didn,t draw

Are you looking for a wilderness type hunt with bivy camps or more "standard" day hunts with a base camp you can drive to?

Have you been putting in for all 5 years prior? It can be a fun unit. Where will you be camping?
-
I'm not 100% certian on where we're going to camp. It will depend on what I find on our scouting trips. I don't have a problem with ether one, but my OLD MAN might....HA, HA. I took him on elk hunt a few years ago about 18 miles in and I thought he was going to kill me....LOL.
This was our first time putting in for this unit, but I have wanted to get an east side tag for a few years. What type of camp would you guys recommend? Thanks, Shane
-
That would depend on what type of hunt you want to experiance. Back counrty or road side :dunno:

I would rather go for back country hunt, I'm not sure of the amount of hunting pressure the area gets but I will go as far as I have to minimize the amount of people.

Man you don't know how lucky you are! The unit is spike-only for OTC this year thanks to our wonderful game department. You should have much less hunters than in years past. :bash:

Hey Thanks Dreaming, I feel lucky to have this oppertunity, it is a once in a life time tag. I did some research prior to putting in and this hunt was by far the best one. I sent you a PM and would love to pick your brain. Thanks Shane.
-
I drew for rifle bull tag for that unit. I am headed over for the weekend with horses in 2 weeks to do some scouting. I let you know what I see.
-
A group of five of us drew with an average of 4 points
-
My group drew that tag last year... should be much better now that it will be OTC spike only. Way less hunters! WE went 7.5 miles in and camped..... still saw too many people but a bunch of elk! Buddy killed a nice 6x6 that scored 317.. its posted on here. the third post here http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,48553.0.html (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,48553.0.html) Saw a monster in there 7x7 that would easily go 370+... lots of bulls but not a gimmee, you will put in the work for it.
-
last year was my last year there after 20+ bowhunting there unless something changes :dunno:
lots of potential to get a really good bull
camp Lindsay is a good area to make a base camp not real critical to get (AWAY) from every body else by the 2 or 3rd day after opening the elk are pretty well scattered through the whole area any place that looks like a good hike off the 1600 rd the 1706 or9roads can play out well, without hiking into the wilderness it is real hard to get too far away from a road.if your interested i can give a little more detail on some pretty decent spots
this was 1/2 mile from the 1709 and 1600 road intersection http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=50304.0;attach=103303 (http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=50304.0;attach=103303)

Man you don't know how lucky you are! The unit is spike-only for OTC this year thanks to our wonderful game department. You should have much less hunters than in years past. :bash:
Everyone bitches about the spike only thing. How about the fact that this unit needs a break. All summer long sheep herders dogs are chasin elk all over the place, then from sept-dec it's a war zone. db I'm not singling you out but over the last 10 years this herd has gone down hill dramatically. I used to see 40-50 elk a day in early season and well over a 100 a day during late season. The past few years you can go a week without seeing an elk.
There are plenty of places in these 2 units to get big bulls. And if spike only reduces the amount of hunters in there then it should become a premier bull tag opportunity. The amount of road access makes it easy to scout and find a decent spot. Drop over windy ridge to the bottom of rattle snake or west of timberwolf and I assure you you will find bulls. You will just have a hump to get them out.

I beg to differ with you Matt. I have hunted it for the past 8 years and have noticed an increase in elk. I see elk every day in the early season. If I didnt get drawn for the Peaches tag I would be in there. I love hunting the Bumping and will be back next year. The Bumping tag holders are very lucky. Good luck to those who drew the tag.
-
Maybe they just moved over to your area. ;)
-
Im not that lucky!
-
I have to agee with Matt, over the years hunting the area i have seen less and less elk, even with the sheep herder in there.
Last year i spend every weekend scouting the area i normally hunt seen maybe a hand full of elk, nothing at all like i used to see in my scouting trips. Then i only seen 4 elk the entire early season.
:bash:
I would not put in for the unit for big bull tag, but then again i am not a wilderness hunter. I do hike, but dont hunt the back country.
-
I would definately put in for a bull tag in this unit. Give it a couple years of spike only and I think that it may come back. Especially since most smart archers will go across the street and hunt the LN. That will bounce a few back over into Bumping. The honey holes will definately get sweeter.
I still think that they should limit the amount of OTC tags for the units. Set a quota and when it's hit no more tags. These units that have a ton of road access are hammered way too hard. Heck it's almost as hard to find a spot to camp as it is to shoot an elk.
-
Matt is right. The elk herd is not at all what it used to be. Just look at the amount of cow tags they are giving out in that area this year, or should I say lack of cow tags.
-
I've been looking at maps and the whole thing looks good, but what area do you guys think a person should consentrate on more the Bumping or the Nile. :dunno:
-
i have a friend that hunts the nile and he loves it does pretty good 2 never head much on the bumping area
-

The WDFW swung the pendulum to far in the wrong direction and now they are trying to bring it back. As little as 6 years ago they said there were too many elk in the Yakima herd and needed to reduce (increased branch and cow permits) and now they say there are not enough. This is probably has some validity to it but they are still a lot of elk in the unit. You couldn't see most of them if they depended on an areial survey. They need to get out and walk around a bit.
-
bumping is a little rougher country and a bit more limited on campinng from what i remember but i have only hunted it a handful of times
the nile is alot more cover alot of ground friendly with alot of acess to alot of country anywhere from 2000 ft. to 6000 ft early season for the most part the elk prefer 4000 to 6000 foot cool holes 5 to 6000 ft. you start getting into alot of spring filled medows that are hard to resist mid sept in 80 + degree wether
i think that the bumping area is a bit higher with more access to wilderness areas but like i said i am not real familiar with it
if ya decide the nile let me know i can probably give ya some decent input
-
Thanks Flinger, I'll take you up on that if I choose the Nile. :hello:
-
They have started logging off wildcat rd. The pictures of mine off my trail cam are from that area if you want to check them out. I am heading back up this Saturday and will post more.
-
Here's a Goose Prairie Archery Bull. I won't tell you where in Goose Prairie. :chuckle:

I know where that is just kidding nice bull.
-
Nice bull PA i like the split tines on the second to last points
-
Now that is an awesome bull PA. If I get an opertunity at one close to that I'll be pumped. What does he score? What year was he taken?
-
He was taken by a friend, archery in Sept. of '05. 13" of one front was broke off. He scored in the 360's w/the broken tine.
-
I've hunted Goose Prairie for archery for the last 6 or 7 years and I think there are more elk now than ever ! Maybe I'm just seeing more because of knowing the area better. I used to only see groups of 2 - 5 elk at a time but the last couple of years I have had herds of 25 passing by me during the season. I think the numbers are up, I think there are so many elk that I am actually thinking of hunting for spike only and pretty confident of filling my tag. My :twocents: . Mike
-
i wonder if because Bumping is spike only for the OTC folks, that it will still offer good odds if everyone packs up and moves to Little Naches. I live in Spokane and tried east of Pend O'rielle river last year and couldn't shake the hunters so i'm headed either to Bumping or LN to give this a try. I like the idea of shooting a branch bull, but prefer the solitude of hunting wilderness vs. the 4 wheelers whizzing by you all the time.
-
there are still the a$$ clowns that will ride into wilderness >:( we were back in about 8 miles and had 2 guys pull up on 4 wheelers on the hill infront of us turn off there 4 wheelers wait 2 mins bugel a few times start back up and leave :bash: >:(
-
saw q1uite a few elk in the unit this past weekend, including a couple of good bulls. very green up there should be great for growth!
-
That was a BAD ASS Bull!! There are some Toads up there!
-
I will be going scouting this weekend to learn the more about the area. Which area should I start in the Bumping or the Nile? As of now I'm planning on hunting in the wilderness areas so I think I'm going to start there but if you think that is a waste of my time I'll try some where else. If you know of some areas someone with a bull permit could have a little luck and don't mind sharing please PM me. Thanks Shane
-
I hope you all hunt HIGH!!!!!!!!!!!
-
i got drawn with 2 points my buddies were calling me quarter share
-

Was that in the Rimrock??? Was it a fatter gentleman with his kid??? If so I ran him off that mountain in 2007. He said he had a gate key and had permission to be on that Rancher's property. I said that's fine and dandy but the property ended at the bottom of the hill, and that he was on Wilderness land. He got all pissy and I told him if I saw his 4wheeler on that mountain again I'd slash his tires. Never saw him again.
-
nope it was a diffrent area. there are a bunch of 4 wheelers around the jeep trails. you know the guys that cruise around a corner shutoff the wheeler and bugel lisen bugel then drive off :bash: there was a biger camp up there last year when we were in there.
-
I am going to be up hunting the Bumping unit for the season, I have hunted it for like the last 6 years. I am going after spikes !!! :whoo:
Anyone that has a bull tag and is not having very good luck can PM me anytime in the season & I will go to your area & call for you or I know a few areas also. Give me a few days to chase spikes ( will be up opening day till I connect ) and them I'm up for some bull chasing. I would rather chase bulls than hunt spikes any day. Good at calling, have meat packs & in good shape. Can hunt any days. Mike
-
That's why for now on I'm gonna hunt the west side. I would rather bugle in bulls for a buddy than hunt spikes any day. Way more exciting.
I think Ill like the West Side. Plenty of closed roads and I can bugle in bulls and ACTUALLY SHOOT THEM!!!! I know weird what a concept huh. Anyways good luck everyone. Have a blast for me.
-
Went and scouted the Bumping this weekend! :IBCOOL: I saw a few bulls not quite what I'm looking for but they're still good bulls. I hiked my a$$, for about 8 hours into the wilderness. My legs f-ing hurts so bad. I can't believe how steep that country is, I climbed so trails that would make a Mountian Goat cry...... It sucked, but I'm glad I did it. I have a good idea of where I will be camping for the season. Good Luck everyone

There are a couple of areas I can think of people sneaking in, but those start in the Nile, I think. Was this from a jeep road over by and jsut south of the Mt. Aix veiwpoint? Theres a jeep trail that heads in towards Rattlesnake Creek, possibly a mile before it becomes wilderness area.
Or possibly up by McDaniel Lake?
-
nope it was another place. it has just a main road that goes back into the area and some old trails that cut back off of it. it is a area i am out of my place and was with my buddy.
-
We are getting ready to head up!
-
We're taking off in the morning. Going to be a great season. I'm so pumped.
-
We will be up there Thursday morning. How far in are you guys camping?
-
I am just curious who ended up with a tag...
I drew the quality any bull elk hunt for goose prairie. I was the only guy out of 491 ppl who applied to get it and I only had 5 points! It was a hunt of a lifetime! My season started the day after archary. I bagged a nice 6x6.
-
Congrats. You should post a picture of it!
-
pictures are good ;D
