Took the boat out for a couple hours today, caught and released this nice 18" Cutt..

Nice fish. Those are fun on the fly when they start coming in.

i'm not very good at fish id's from the salt, but you got me wondering on that one.

Thanks, tough to throw those back, but I knew I just had a short time to fish, no point in keeping one.

Again, not a fish expert, but sea-runs usually have spots throughout most of their whole body, and especially throughout all of their fins. Their mouths tend to be white, with NO color. Just because there are slashes doesn't mean its a cutthroat. Still a fun catch. Good job for throwing it back.

I would pay money if that was not a jack chinook from the salt.
a little bit of money, like maybe a buck or 2 but i swear thats a 'nookey.
i don't see cutthroat at all. forked tail, black gumline, no bronze-ish cutt coloration, etc.

I've caught probably four dozen Cutts at this particular lake, they all look like this one. The picture may have enough glare to distort a bit. If you look at the Lake Wa. Cutt in this link, it's very similar, tail, head, etc.. A chinook would have even larger spots yet and if it was on the return would have more of a kype to the jaw. I've seen returning salmon also caught in the lake and they are always fairly dark and mostly in the river-phase.

here's a lake wa cutthroat up close. i don't know the guy so i blacked out his face, but the pic was all over the local fishing boards.

Here's some other Cutt photo's for comparison, notice the tail, adipose and back specling, just as in my photo. You'll have to paste in your browser. The males also have many more spots than do the females, likely I caught a female.

Working too much, but with the economy going nuts I need to be grateful for the job. Holiday weekends are not for us. We stay home and do projects that would normally be put on the back burner. Pat and I shoveled a yard of rock, took the dog swimming, plus Pat did some up grades on our kayaks.
Tomorrow brakes on the van, move some trees, do something to the garden, wash and polish the van and truck.
:dunno:
Back to camping and fishing ASAP. :drool:

I'm with you. This is one weekend I stay out of the woods. I almost either worki it, or stay home and barbecue moose burgers. The Garden is almost completely in, and sprinkler system is upgraded. Its about time to hit the slopes for some rocks or something. I need to get to the fly tieing bench soon as well. I should have done that when the snow was deep, but you know how that goes. Work here was busy. Way too many traumas for a Saturday night. People will never learn.

Didn't know you were a green thumb Bone, used to own a landscaping business. What type of system did you install?

I have about a 2 acre lawn, and about an acre in garden. I also have 30 pheasant pens that I have to water every day. I had put in underground PVC with manual valves to save money, but that becomes an issue when the temps hit 120 around here in the summer and I want to be camping. My birds were on a hose to a valve system and I manually water 6 different lines. I put in PVC out to the pens and then changed all my manual vavles over to rainbird and or orbit. I now have 4 computers and 27 valves to different lines. My house is gorgeous ight now with at least 20 varieties of Iris and then the peonie and roses, wild, and 55 different domestic ones, along with daisys and everything else that is in bloom right now including my early daylillies. the sprinklers really help with my time and relieve a little pressure when I want to be out in the woods. Toss in the color from about 25 -30 different bird species (pheasants and fowl), and its a regular kaleidiscope around here.

I'm jealous. You should look in to a Maxicom, or Calsense CCU ;). Not cheap though -maybe you already have one? I'm our HOA pres/ irrrigator and we just installed a new 1.5 acre native planting area with trails, getting all the irrigation bugs out with 12k worth of Shore Pine, Mock Orange, Rhody, Currant, Ocean Spray, Mahonia, Ninebark and some other natives. We have a good system, but need a better control unit, right now we have the battery operated valves.
