Title: Mosin Nagant
Post by: yakimarcher on June 22, 2010, 09:45:03 AM
I was thinking about getting a mosin-nagant rifle, putting a custom stock on it and using it as my hunting rifle (I hunt archery for deer and elk so this would be for bears or if i ever get a moose tag). I understand that the 7.62 x 54 is comaparable to the .30-06, which i consider acceptable though i really wanted something more powerful like a .300 weatherby or a .338. i was hoping that this would yield a good budget hunting rifle. but the cost/availibility of ammo and any reliability or repair issues  may offset anything i save on the innitial cost of the gun. so my question is wheather im better off from a money stand point just buying a good used rifle.

i have a mosin nagant, i don't use it as a hunting rifle,  "just as a messing around at the range rifle"  i got mine for $89 at Big 5 and i don't regret it,  i din't coustomise mine though.  let.it.fly is right though,  it is a very heavy rifle,  ammo isn't too hard to find in stores, ( I usually buy surplus ammo for mine though) $200 for 880 rounds.    one thing though,...  this gun is amazingly acurate.  with open sights i shoot less than 1 inch groups at 100 yards, and i hit 10 out 0f 10 plastic bottles at 200.  i took this gun coyote hunting once,... and after a little while the sling really started to dig into my shoulder.

basically its a cheap, yet accurate rifle,  but do to the weight i wouldn't use it for huntin if i had to walk in very far.

Cabelas had them on sale a few weeks ago for like a $100, at the time I thought it was kind of funny, because they were on sale at the same time of the first episode of Top Shot.

Ya thats what i was thinking was getting one for like 90 to 100 bucks, then getting a stock for 100 bucks or less, then seeing what she can do.

If you replace the stock you will take quite a bit of weight out of it but they only weigh like 9 lbs to begin with....

From what I have found out, they are very easy to convert to 45 70.

I have had two. a long one and a carbine.  Both were bowling pin accurate at 200 yards with surplus ammo.  Another recent thread had some people with very innacurate ones so make sure to check the rifling.  The main thing I don't like about  them is the safety is a pain in the butt to use.

Ballistics are much closer to a .308 than an -06.

I'm looking at getting one as well.  Has anyone tried the scout scope setup?  Just wondering how it worked out.  I'd like an m38 or m44 set up as a sporter for an 'in the brush' type of gun.  I'm assuming the Big5 guns are 91/30's?

MY COUSIN HAS THE SCOUT SCOPE SETUP ON HIS 91/30.  IT WAS GREAT,  YOU JUST HAVE TO HAVE A SCOPE WITH LONG EYE RELEIF.  AND YES THE ONES IN BIG 5 ARE 91/30'S

I read this last night and had a DOHHHH!!! moment. I have no idea why I never thought of it. I own several, because they are fun and cheap. I also have a PSL in the same caliber.

Well after reading your comment, I got to mulling the idea around and did some measurements. The 45-90 will fit! I call my gunsmith and ran the idea by him. I am now looking for a M39 and a barrel. I am also going to have a piece of walnut cut to the shape of one of the synthetic stocks that are being offered now.

I was given a Mosin Negant so I began to modify it. Now of course the Mil-Surp gun guys castigate me for meddling with its collectable value. But that ship has sailed.
I put a SKS synthetic stock on it. Then I purchased a drop-down bolt from Rock Solid Industries. It's going to the gunsmith next Friday to have the barrel shortened by 1.5" and re-crowned.
I plan on reloading the ammunition. I'll purchase brass ammo from Privi Partisan, shoot them, then reload with .308 or .311 Sierra Bullets. I'll slug the barrel first to see just what the diameter of the bullet needs to be.
The scope mount I selected is also from Rock Solid Industries and was pretty expensive. If I had it to do over again I'd use a simple rail mount that attached to the rear sights and then machine a smaller mount to fit between the receiver and end of the rail to give it a more solid attachment.
Finally I have a new Redfield 3X9X40 scope that I'll attach to the mount
One remaining task is to clean the carbon out of the bore. I'm going to use a homemade electro-chemical cleaner to get all the carbon out.
Then I'll take it to the range and sight it in. I have spoken to several Mosin owners and after some tweeking they were able to turn the old sniper rifle into a Tack Driver. I'm hoping for the same results. This is what I'm hoping for.
