Title: Jeremiahs Mount Spokane Cow Moose
Post by: Jerome on June 23, 2010, 05:57:34 PM
I am going to follow in Moose Eyes steps.

Jeremiah is 10 and passed his hunters education when he was 8.  I didnt feel confident when he was 8 or 9 to let him pack a rifle while out hunting.  So instead i figured that he would just shadow me another couple years.  This past year i let him shoot some grouse on his own and bought him a diamond edge bow to shoot around the house.  I figured if he could take care of that bow that it was a step in the right direction.  This will be his first big game hunt where he will be packing a rifle.  Ever since he was young i would ask him what he wanted to go hunting for and his reply was always moose.  I told him how the Washington draws were and informed him that it would probally be along time before drawing a tag.

The day i checked the backdoor results and saw selected for youth moose was exciting but very nerve racking due to the redraw a couple years ago.  On Monday morning Jeremiah was jumping on my bed yelling its official i drew Mount Spokane.  Since then i have been talking back in forth with my uncle that lives in Otis Orchards.

Our plan is to hit two scouting trips in September where i will be packing my bow for whitetails.  We are making this a family hunt where it will be my 3 kids, wife, my dad, my step mom, and my uncle.  Most likely the two other kids will be in Otis Orchards with my aunt but when the moose hits the dirt they will get the call to help with a family packout.  To say the least our whole family is pretty exicted about this hunt.

Thats what I love to see.  A young kid getting an early start hunting with his family.  I think my son was 10 when he shot his first grouse, then 12 when he shot his first whitetail doe.  Those early experiences changed his life forever.  Now he's 29 and lives for hunting. I'm glad to see you getting him started since he is interested.  Its just the beginning of a life full of memories for him.  I still remember my first hunt with my dad when I was 13.  I shot a blacktail doe and a spike elk that year.  I'll cherish that memory of my first season hunting long after my dad is gone.

I have no doubts if you didnt draw a elk tag in every state that you would be on the camera in Spokane.

My daughters are small and shoot a Win. mod.70 youth ranger in 7mm-08. You can get factory loads up to 150 gr and hand load 160 gr bullets for it. And I carry shooting sticks for them.

I can't even imagine being able to hunt a moose at his age, I was tagging alongside my dad with my model 94 30-30 with iron sites when I was his age. :chuckle:

Jeremiah and I watched some moose dvds and went over some moose vital charts.  The whole house has moose fever.  Our 4 year old is running around shooting the dogs with a lever action nerf gun saying they are moose.

What's he packing for a rifle?  The 7mm-08 is a nice gun.  Good thing about moose they go down easier than elk.  I knew a guide in BC never used anything but a 30-30.

.308 is even better - same cartridge as the .243 and 7mm-08 but larger diameter bullet of course.   Surprised the .308 with sabots never caught on - .308 for moose, 7mm for deer, .243 for varmits haha.  Can't wait to hear your updates.  We will be over there too call if you need help - sounds like you have plenty of hands though.

Got his tag and card in the mail, only thing left is the packet.  We went up shooting today for a couple hours.  Mainly the .17 and .22 but he did shoot the 308 alittle.  Going to take a drive  around the Methow tomorrow to knock on some doors for his fall turkey tag.

Sorry on a late update.  We got into camp a day before season and went up to where we had scouted earlier on.  Still wasnt excited about the sign i was seeing.  We decided to abandon the game plan for the opener and go into a different area blind.  We were 10 minutes into the hunt and there is a big cow standing on the side of the grade.  I got Jeremiah set up and ready and it took off up the hill, we tracked it for 20 minutes or so and caught up with it broadside 30 yards in a meadow.  I couldnt get my 10 year steady enough to shoot.  This went on for three days, got within 50 yards of 4 cows and no shots fired.  We ended up seeing around 20 cows and 4 bulls.  Justin might have some pictures of the cows to post and i will dig up some of the bulls.  We are going back this weekend and two more weekends in November.

Keep after them !  Good luck.  I picked up my son's moose meat from the processor in Spokane yesterday - It looks like we are going to be eating a lot of moose chile, taco's and burgers - that's a lot of meat.  The good thing for your boy waiting until November is it may be cold enough when you get one to hang it and cut and wrap yourself - $.89/lb. cut and wrap charge - ouch !

Finally got some down time to type out a quick story.  We got into Spokane Saturday evening and recieved some bad news, IEP closed all the gates for the winter.  Feeling pretty discouraged i told my wife i wanted to make the hour drive to where i thought our best bet would be.  We got to the gate with not alot of time to hunt so i told Jeremiah and my wife to stay in the truck while i went to see if could see any fresh tracks in the snow.  I went about a 100 yards or so and i was determined that we could kill a moose in there in the morning. We went back to Spokane and i threw out a couple of hail mary pms to see if i could gather up any better area.  Thanks Matt and Magnum Willy for the replys.

We woke up Sunday and headed back to the gate where we were at the evening before.  A couple hundred yards before the gate i saw a set of moose tracks walking down the road.  We got to the gate and i started getting everything together and my son says" Dad there is something in the bushes."  It was alittle breezy so i didnt think too much of it.  Then he says"Dad there is a moose in the bushes."  That got my wifes attention and they walked towards the gate, she came back and whispered get the gun ready.

I load up the gun and pull the bi pods all the way out, click the safety on and hand it to my son.  My son and I walk really slow and i can see the hind end in some alders.  I cant get a look to see if it has antlers or not so my wife walks up a little grade to get a better look and i hear her say "Jeremy there is no horns."

At that time it exploaded down the road at a dead run.  Jeremiah and I hurried around the corner and we saw it still running down the road.  Lucky for us it was a long straight away.  I told Jeremiah get ready and he dropped to his butt and steadied is .308, i grunted 1 time and it stopped broadside.  I whisper right behind the shoulders and before i can finish i heard ka boom.
I was unsure of the hit until i saw a stumble and then down for the count.  A perfect 100 hundred yard shot right behind the shoulder and took out both lungs.

We were getting ready to gut it out and a elk hunter on a quad drove up and i asked if he would drag it back to the truck for us.  He did better than that by dragging it back to the truck and wenching it in the back.  Thanks again.

Thanks to carpsniperg2 for sending me all the maps and info months before the season started and the other members that suggested some areas to check out.  Justin and Jenna for making the long drive from Oregon and all my family that helped on this hunt.

Jerome, congrats to your son.  Did he get the post shot shakes?  I sure did when I got my bull in October.  Took 10 minutes before I could get a decent photo that wasn't blurry.  Low light and fog slowed the shutter speed so things kept coming our blurred.  Enjoy the meat, it eats good.
