I am looking at the 10x42's, but am considering the 8.5x42 in the EL's. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
-
SLCs are definitely heavier than ELs. I'm not sure about the difference in optics. I have a pair of 10X42 SLCs and they're great but have some heft to them.
-
I have the 10x32 EL's.. I bought them because of the weight and size.. I wanted a smaller set of bino's to hang off of my bino harness, but yet a quality pair you could still see early in the mornings and late in the evenings.. I don't have any complaints about them at all!
-
I own both. 10x50 SLC's, 15x56 SLC's and 10x42 els. The ELs definitely have the best glass, they are also MUCH lighter. If you wear a bino buddy/harness, they are the way to fly. In low light situations, my 10x50 SLC's definitely have the advantage over my EL's. This is before and after legal shooting light - I am talking, DARK.
Will you spot more animals with either pair? No, the glass is so good, it really come down to the ergonomics and what "feels" best to you.

I am not familiar with swarovski's so I can't give any input as to the glass (though I am sure it is good). I went through this dilema when I bought mine. I chose to go with the 8x42 after checking out several different brands, powers, etc. I liked them because they had a greater field of vision and seemed to be a lot easier on my eyes during long periods of glassing. In my opinion the magnification with the 8x42 is plenty good enough for most instances. If you need more than that the animal is well out of range anyway and you may as well cut distance or get out the spotting scope. :twocents: for whatever that is worth!

By the way, did you pull any tags???

I have SLC's. A buddy has EL's. I can't tell the difference between the glass. I could tell a pretty good difference between the weight though. The EL's feel noticeably lighter. Other than that the only difference in my opinion is the price!

The EL's are definately lighter. Both excellent glass.
I pulled the trigger tonight on a pair of 10x42 EL's. I love them! I am in so much trouble when the wife finds out!

EL's are 5oz lighter than SLC's.The new HD SLC 10x42's weight the same EL's,not much of a weight difference. :dunno:
-
I think everyone here has pretty much told what the difference is.
I got mine at Kesselring's and would suggest wherever you do get them make sure they let you take them out of the store so you can look through them and "see" what one is best for your eye. While they are both great you may find you see more comfortably through one or the other.
I went EL and love them for the weight and field of vision, I wear glasses and have no problem with the relief I get with them.

Thanks for all the input, my buddy has the SLC's and they are great a little heavy but not bad the EL's seem to be a little more comfortable use and hold steady. I already have the STS 20-60 65mm so I just don't know wether the extra $$$ is worth what I am going to get out of the EL's. I think I am just going to keep looking around and if the right deal comes along on the EL's, I will get em if not then I will get the SLC's. Thanks again.
Wing it: No tags for me this year :'(

Went with the SLC's 10x42 thanks for all the advice! :)

Did a side x side a few years ago w/10x42 SLCs and ELs. No observable difference in light gathering or sharpness, one image was redder, one greener. I can save 5oz in many other areas ...

Well, I have the same binos that you just got and they will be worth every penny you paid for them. Happy hunting!
-
I think you will be very happy with your new binos, we like ours and they have taken a lot of abuse for many years now, definitely good quality optics.

Congrats on the new glass!! I run the SLC's also!! cant beat them!!
