:) We just got our tax return back and I am thinking I would like to get a new Rifle.
I want something I can hunt Deer, Bear, and Elk with. Right now I hunt with a 30-06 Savage model 110. It's an alright gun but I am beginning to think it may be a bit to big for me. I bought the 30-06 about 9 year ago I believe from my uncle so it is the only gun I have ever hunted with.
I am thinking about getting a .270 with a synthetic stock, but I am not sure. I really don't have a huge knowledge on guns. I've really never had anyone around to teach me.
-
well we could debate this all night long. The 270 would be a perfect choice fer anyone. Very flat shooting even better hitting power I dont think you could go wrong. Some people think the 270 is to small for elk but I know many people that kill elk every year with it. The 30-06 is probably the best all around gun out there. But the 270 is not far behind.
-
why do you think your 06 is too big for you? like the stock is too big or the caliber is too big?
-
I have shot Deer and Elk with a .270, awesome caliber, low recoil. Lots of bullet choice, we have shot 130 grain on both many, many, many times.
-
Choosing a rifle is a very personal thing, of course. My 2 cents..........you can't go wrong with a 270. It's a very flat shooting rifle. My son has one and he is very accurate with it. He also has a synthetic stock with a 3-9X40 Leupold scope.
-
The .06 is the perfect elk gun. While I have killed a ton of deer, bear and a few elk with my .270, I think a .270 can be a little light for those without alot of experience.
Maybe try some lighter loads with the .06?
-
The first hunting rifle that I bought was a 270. I wouldn't be afraid to hunt anything in the lower 48 with it with a good bullet. My wife just got a 270 for herself this last fall.
-
Michelle,
I assume you are talking about the kick? If so try a .308, if memory serves my correctly it just about 200fps slower and almost the same ballistics 2-3 inches or so less@ 100yds, as the 06; Same size bullet, and has considerably less kick than the 30-06. I have one, a pre 64 model 70 feather weight Win. that is the best shooting gun I think there is. It feels like an extension of your arm, and doesent knock it off. Having had a couple shoulder rebuilds it's not too bad on my tender shoulders. Where the 06 would have made me piss myself and pass out from the kick.
I think it would do fine for Elk Deer and bear; infact that is what I use. The .308 is plenty of gun for any of those critters. Its all about shot placement.
Check it out, you may like it.
-
this is turning into a whats the better for which game thread rather than help michelle pick a new rifle thread...just as red dawg predicted.
if the caliber is too big, you can buy managed recoil or lighter loads for the 06, if the stock is too big or the rifle is too big...you can likely buy a youth stock for that savage. slenk has a guy's email address that sells savage parts that has a world of stocks.
-
by the way...if you just want another rifle, well....thats ok too.
;)
-
by the way...if you just want another rifle, well....thats ok too.
;)
That's right , you can never have too many :chuckle:
-
If you like the rifle you have just do what jackelope said, try some managed recoil rounds before you spend a bunch of money on a new rifle. I think just about every manufacturer of factory ammo makes them now and from what little i have heard about them they are good. But it is always good to go buy another gun.
-
I think I want to keep the 30-06 the way it is and get a new rifle.
I usually shoot Federal and Hornaday, aprox 165 - 180 grain.
Yes I feel the stock is way to long. When I shoot it, it feels like it's gonna knock my arm off because I can't hold it into my shoulder correctly to look through the scope. The scope has been moved back as far as it will go. I had a gun shop mount the scope when I lived in Oregon. I have a hard time getting the group I want when sighting it in. I also feel that the weight of the gun is a bit heavy as well. My 30-06 has a solid wood stock. I can handle the kick if the gun fit right.
-
so the real problem is...your a sissy lil girl! :P
Get something with a youth stock...period.
270 is a great caliber but I dont know that Id personally claim it to have less recoil than an .06 :dunno:
If ya wanted a significant difference in weight, length, and recoil then go to wally world and drop 300$ for a youth model 243...which lots of people are gonna say is too small for elk and bear... but Im pretty sure its legal for deer, elk, bear in this state and probably would be legal for any big game in the lower 48 (although someone knows some state where Im probably wrong).
What do I suggest? Get a synthetic youth stock...the rest is details. That will mean shorter and lighter, ...but I like to bring a big gun to the fight but ur call.
so...options thus far?
1. use the .06 but switch stocks - very good option...cheapest option
2. get a 270 with youth stock - great caliber and size / weight will be right but no recoil decrease..but get new gun
3. get a 243 or a 25.06 with youth stock - on the light side of calibers ...bordering on a coyote caliber...but light, short, and huge recoil decrease
-
I can handle the recoil. It's the weight of the rifle and the length of the stock.
I'm not saying I'm not considering getting a stock for the 30-06. I'm interested in my options on a new rifle.
-
Try a Remington Model 7. Any cartridge it's available in from 243 and up will work. I would go with the 308 just because of the availability of cheap ammo.

S&W has that new I-bolt. i was reading up on it yesterday. im waiting for one of you guys to get one so i can see how it is. it comes in .270.

There a many guns out there for you to choose from as we all know. And believe me we are going to tell ya, because that is what we do. I am a remington man all of the way. But I will tell you that Browning's rifles work real well for people with short arms. I think my partner has the hunter. Great little gun they are light and short sounds like a perfect fit. Or you could just go shopping and find one that you like and ignore everything that we have said. That is probably what I would do.

I agree with Red Dawg! Also; take your time, very exciting time when looking to buy a new gun, enjoy it, because as soon as you drop the cash, you will start second guessing yourself and wondering if you should have got something else! :chuckle: (I hate it when that happens!!!!)
-
My next gun is going to be a 270 weatherby Acuumark.
-
I will tell you that Browning's rifles work real well for people with short arms.
I tried out some of the browning rifles and they seemed not to fit right. Something just didn't match up. It felt like the stock was too short. I am not tall and don't have long arms. How it suits you is important.
-
Remington 700 CDL, its a beautiful gun and very accurate. Mine is in the 270 caliber and I love it.
-
Savage 110 is a fairly light rifle. The long action cartridges are going to be a little heavier (such as 30-06 and .270).
If you like the Savage but it is a little too heavy, you might look at the Savage 110 in a short action like 7-08 or .308.
Or like Bobcat suggested, a Rem model 7 should work for you. Just go with a 7-08 or .308 and I think you will be happier than you are w/ the 30-06.
-
I just checked the Savage website and I don't see the 110 listed anymore. They do have other models though.......I think the 116fhss would fit the bill. http://www.savagearms.com/16fhss.htm
Get that in 7-08 and you will be able to take deer and elk easily and the rifle only weighs 6.5lbs w/ the 22" barrel just like the Rem model 7.
-
You can get a Stevens(Savage) 7mm-08 for under $300 If you shop around. I have one , its light and handy, and very little recoil. And they are a little shorter length of pull . About 13 inches .

You may want to look into getting a 300 winchester short mag. You get good balistics and the recoil is like an 30-06. You cant go wrong with a remington model 700 and they have a big selection to choose from. Tikkas are gauranteed acurated and come with a target with 3 shots to show you. Kelley (my wife ) is looking for another rifle and picked up th browning A-Bolt and really liked the feel and the stock fit her great. The nice thing about the a bolt is that it has a detatchable magazine. a 60 degree throw on the bolt and is a pretty light weapon. We are looking at the 300 short mag also. Oh yeah the other nice thing about the short mag is that it is a short action. Go to a gun shop and pick up every hunting rifle you can in a caliber you are comfortable shooting, the 30-06 is a good one, and pick onr that feels good to you. Things to look for is the triggers on the guns, it makes a differance on how they pull, creep , pull weight , etc... Oh yeah Michelle dont be a sissy, my wife hunts with my 300 win mag and shoots it fine ;)

That Stevens would be perfect, IMO. Get it in a 308, you can't go wrong. Only 6 1/2 pounds.

Oh yeah Michelle don't be a sissy, my wife hunts with my 300 win mag and shoots it fine ;)
Like I said before I can handle the recoil on my 30-06. The problem for me is. The stock is about 2 inches or so to long and I am straining to look through the scope. This is throwing me off when I try and shoot my group. It is also uncomfortable to shoot because I can't properly hold it against my shoulder and look through the scope at the same time.
Since I am thinking of buying a new rifle anyway I thought I might get something a little lighter as well. Something with a synthetic stock instead of a wood stock.
It's not a question of wether or not I am a wuss, sissy, wimp, *censored*, or what ever. The gun does not feel right, it doesn't fit me, and it is uncomfortable to shoot.
Yes Longtatlaw I said *censored*! :P
-
Do you still have to go through the 7 day waiting period when you buy a rifle? I've never bought a gun from a store so I've never looked into it.
-
No waiting on Rifles Handguns yes. At least that has been my experience.
If you like the 06 buy a new synthetic youth stock.
Jim Briggs has new takeoffs for around $30-$35 and he is a great guy to deal with .
He is on the Savage Shooters forum.

There is no wait on the rifle purchase unless there is a problem with the federal check. Most federal delays are cleared within 72 hours and I have experienced one so far. The state waiting period applies to handguns and not to long guns/rifles. In addition to that - if you have a concealed weapons permit you don't have to wait to get your pistol as long as the federal check passes.
-
Thanks, Slenk. So, they only offer the 110 in the package deal now? The 110 is a rifle I was considering for my wife a while back but I put it on the back burner. I wouldn't want a package deal since I'd rather get a Leupold scope for it and not the scope that Savage puts on it.
-
Curly
One of our sons just traded for a Savage 111 same thing as the older 110.
It was a package gun also . He said the scope was crap, but the rifle was nice . Take a look at the Stevens as they are the same thing as the old Savage 110 ,no accutrigger. I have one in 7mm-08 that I really like . They come in short & long actions.
Slenk
-
Just throw the junk scope in the garbage and put a decent scope on it (or sell it to somebody on here.) ;) I doubt you're paying much extra for the included scope anyway.
-
Accutrigger is a Savage brand trigger that they came up with a few years ago. It is supposed to be pretty good.
Short action is just that.........shorter than a long action. And a shorter action means less weight. Some cartridges use a long action and some use short. 30-06 based cartridges for example are long action and .308 based cartridges are short action.
If you want less weight, you will need to go with a short action; ie .308, 7-08 or the various WSM's. I wouldn't recommend WSM's in a light, short rifle as it could kick the snot out of you. :chuckle:
-
My wife picked up a Remington model 7 in 7mm-08 and really likes it. She got the 'youth' or small frame version and it fits her perfectly. The short actions don't kick quite as bad, if you go with a long action they make reduced recoil rounds now that are pretty decent.
-
Michele, Check out the Tikka T3 light, they come in most calibers, they have synthetic stocks. The Remington model 7 is a great rifle but sometimes to small for adults. The Tikka is in the middle as size goes. Go to Sportsmans and just start looking, they have everything that has been mentioned here.
I love looking for new rifles
-
Yeah maybe i should have mentioned my wife is a runt. :chuckle:
-
Well I guess what I will do is go to sportsmans and cabelas first and see what they have in the rifles mentioned above. Narrow it down to a couple that fit me first off and narrow it down from their. Once I get it narrowed down to what I want I can go price shopping for it. :)
-
Good idea Michelle, make sure you try Federal Way Discount Guns for price once you narrow your search, they are hard to beat for price.
-
There is a new gun store in Rochester you might try, at least give them a call and get a price, once you figure out what it is you want to order. They are only charging 10% over their cost, plus shipping. Of course you could also order your rifle through Wal Mart, if you don't have a problem with them. Here's a link to the Rochester store:

remington model 700 mountain rifle! or model 7! or maybe a ruger77 ultralight thats my vote and I am pretty sure I am right and everyone else is wrong! JB
-
Model 700 LSS is a sweet gun. They make them with a detachable mag. That in a 270 or 270 wsm would be perfect.
-
ok Red dog and I are right everyone else is wrong JB
-
ok I can role with that.

Wow, lots of great input. This makes things much clearer. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Michelle, take a look at the 270 short mag. It will do everything you want. There are now a lot of options but I chose a Browing A_bolt stainless stalker. It is a very nice gun. It cost a bit more than some but it is excellent without getting into the customs and high end stuff. The "short mag" will give you the extra punch you want for elk and it is as flat shooting as it gets until you get into the high end stuff. I primarily Archery hunt but I love shooting that gun!.

i have the same savage 110 and i did not have alot of cofidence in the way it shot i thought it was me recently my friend taught me how to hand load he told me to go buy the best factory ammo i can buy so i bought federal 165 . he loaded 20 rounds of the same grain of bullet and loaded diffrent powder charges . so we got to the range told me to shoot 5 rounds of the factory - not very impressiveabout 3 in group. shot the first load of his 1 in group 2nd .8 3rd 1in 4th .553 i am a believer in the hand load now and know that you have to load the ammo that suits your gun . i have all th convidence in the world now in my savage

I'm going to Sportsmans today to look at my rifle options today!
-
Did you find any that you can not live without? :dunno:

That new store in Rochester is ran by my Brother Tom. He knows what he says, is a great guy and the World Champion "Bull Sh*tter" go see him its fun.

I spent about 2 1/2 hours their looking at different rifles and scopes.
I looked at the Remington Model 700 SPS *Buckmaster Edition*. I looked at both the .270 and 30-06.
http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_SPS_DM.asp
I looked at the Remington Model 700 SPS. I looked at:
270 Win and WSM,
30-06,
300 Win,WSM, and Win Mag
http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_SPS.asp
I did look at a couple of the Tikka's.
Beretta Tikka T3 Lite 30-06 Springfield Rifle

I got a new rifle last year...Tikka T3 .300 WSM Beretta. It has taken down a deer and bear with no issues. The shells are a bit expensive (48 bucks for a box of 20), but other than that, I dont have too many complaints. Shoots well, killed what I aimed at...seems to hold up. Best of luck with your purchase...and whatever you do, post pics of what ya get! Leaves quite an exit wound (I use 165grains)...but that is expensive. Plus...the family knows when it goes off..sounds like a cannon. ;)
Cheers~!
-
I have a Ruger 77 MKII in 270. stainless w/ synthetic stock topped with a 3X9 Ziess Conquest and have been real happy with it. Sub MOA with factory loads. Some other factory ammo the group opens up a bit, just depends on what the rifle will like to shoot. Your just going to have to find out what feels right to you as far as rifles go. Alot of good options out there so keep doing your homework and hopefully you will make there right choice for "you".
-
Michelle,
I didn't read through all the posts but you may want to check out the 7mm-08. Should easily handle the game you talking about out to around 250-300 yards and is a little easier on the recoil side of things. Rem makes it in a couple smallish bolt actions.... the model 7 and I think one of their Mtn. Rifle versions.
-
Michelle,
I didn't read through all the posts but you may want to check out the 7mm-08.
I was trying to steer her toward the 7-08 also. Perfect cartridge for a lightweight deer/elk rifle. I will be getting one for my wife one of these days. (Although, I will probably be using it more than her :chuckle:)
-
i would love to have a 7mm-08 model 700 mountain rifle for putting in the scabbard. Great ballistics for what it is. Who am I kidding i can never decide what i want. There are to many options out there.
-
If money is not a concern you may check out http://cooperfirearms.com/ they will make one in almost any caliber your looking for, I highly recommend the 257 Roberts. Their guns are tack drivers, you won't be disappointed.
-
I am sure that a cooper rifle is a great rifle but i cant get over the ugly action of the gun. The stocks are great pieces though. Just depends on what you like i guess.

That's where I bought my Savage Model 14 American Classic .308 last year. Good shop, and I love the rifle.
By the way, when I went to order my rifle from WalMart, they told me it would take five weeks! Five weeks!? Four days at Federal Way Discount Guns.
-
No. I got a little while yet. I didn't get drawn for spring bear. I will probably wait a couple months and make sure I find the right one.

theres worse problems to have than which rifle to pick. good luck michelle

Good, you should never rush yourself. You will know when you have found the right rifle for you.

Phool, They are sure some nice looking guns for sure, but I don't think I could take it outdoors. I
Your not going to scratch the gun, maybe the stock. Even if this happens a stock is easily repaired or replaced, you shouldnt limit out a gun because your worried about scratches. The fact is Michelle you will be hard pressed to find a better shooting rifle for the price, I'm quite sure Head-shot will agree as well.

good choices and great prices too. i had the sps in 270wsm and it was a really accurate gun. but i decided after half a season i didnt like synthetic stocks and got rid of it. now i wish i hadnt though.
-
Why don't you like synthetic stocks?
-
Why don't you like synthetic stocks?
idk it was my first rifle with a synthetic stock and i just wasnt use to them.
but now i like them...certain ones anyway. the sps stock feels really nice in the hand imo compared to alot of other higher end rifles with synthetic stocks. when it boils down to me buying another deer rifle the sps will be one of my choices forsure. the one i had really balanced out nicely with a 4x12x50 nikon scope. i cant for the life of me remember the model though.
-
Michelle, not about the rifle choice, but the scope. Don't over look the nikon Team Primos. That is the Monark UCC. When they came out with the new model Monark they renamed it and chopped the price. It is a lot better scope with a small price. Have a 3x9x40 on my .06 if I ever take my Redfield 2x7 off my 270 I WILL be mounting one of these :twocents:
-
i have a friend that has a primos scope on his hunting rifle and i like it alot.....great color, and clarity...really good on eye strain also for there larger objectives......
for price, you cant beat it. and nikon would be my ext choice after leupold, all though i do have to say that bushnell elite is a mighty fine objective also....thats the 3200 or 4200 series scopes though.....and my next scope for a varmit rifle will probably be a vortex....got my lil bro a pair of higher end binos and for vortex, saved me a lot of money for the quality i got, and so i think im gonna give them one more try.....vertex has my recommendation and approval.....I give it the "E" stamp......Either way glass these days is all coming down to the nit and gritty, and so many scopes are so different that it to me it all depends on the individual scope if i like it....
If you buy it from a store, ask them to take it out of the box and let you play with it.....tell them you want to open the box there gonna sell you.....
-
Hi,
Have you looked at the Ruger youth rifle? In 7-08 it would be very close to the 270 and they are light, easy to carry and pretty accurate. The 260 version would also a very nice package. I think it might be worth a quick look. The Stevens is also a light easy to carry accurate gun but, I'm not sure the stock would be much better then the one you have. Good luck in what ever you decide on. Let us know how it shoots.
-
I went to Sportsmans Warehouse today and talked to Les back at the gun counter. He looked at my rifle, scope setup, and the new scope I was thinking about getting for the .270. He thought we may be able to fix my problems with my 30-06 just buying a new scope and making some adjustments.
He checked how my barrel was floating in the stock while I was their and at the very end we couldn't get a piece of paper to slide. He says this might be a bit of my accuracy problem. Told me to take the stock off and sand it down and seal it. I was like :yike: you want me to pull my rifle appart? I've never worked on a rifle before always took it to a gun shop. Any way he told me how to do it so I came home. Got my stock off and sanded it down. I took it back and he checked my work and put the new scope on my 30-06l That took care of my eye reliefe problem and the gun is a whole lot more comfortable. Now I just need to get it sighted in! :IBCOOL:
I'm all depressed that I didn't get the .270 but now that I don't need a new rifle it will give me a chance to save for the Remmy 700 CDL .270 and maybe buy it at the begining of next year. :)
I still need a good pair of binos, a packboard, and a few other things for this hunting season. I never needed this stuff in Georgia. Hunting out here is getting expensive! :'(
-
At least some of us get our taxidermy done for free!!! Think how much money you are going to save! :chuckle:

Told me to take the stock off and sand it down and seal it. I was like :yike: you want me to pull my rifle appart? I've never worked on a rifle before always took it to a gun shop. Any way he told me how to do it so I came home. Got my stock off and sanded it down. I took it back and he checked my work and put the new scope on my 30-06l
I did this with my Rem 700 the day I got it I'm able to fit 2 dollar bills down the barrel all the way down the stock (been this way for 20 years now) and I have always been able to hold a 3 shot group to the size of a quarter or smaller. Worked great for me :chuckle:

If you haven't already bought the scope, I strongly recommend the Nikon Team Primos for less money...you get alot more scope.
I can't stress this enough.
I buy alot from SWFA and would get it there.

Yes, bought the scope yesterday when I took in my rifle. Think I spent $216 after tax.
