Michelle, take a look at the 270 short mag. It will do everything you want. There are now a lot of options but I chose a Browing A_bolt stainless stalker. It is a very nice  gun. It cost a bit more than some but it is excellent without getting into the customs and high end stuff. The "short mag" will give you the extra punch you want for elk and it is as flat shooting as it gets until you get into the high end stuff. I primarily Archery hunt but I love shooting that gun!.

i have the same savage 110 and i did not have alot of cofidence in the way it shot i thought it was me recently my friend taught me how to hand load he told me to go buy the best factory ammo i can buy so i bought federal 165 . he loaded 20 rounds of the same grain of bullet  and loaded diffrent powder charges . so we got to the range told me to shoot 5 rounds of the factory  - not very impressiveabout 3 in group. shot the first load of his 1 in group   2nd .8  3rd 1in 4th .553 i am a believer in the hand load now and know that you have to load the ammo that suits your gun . i have all th convidence in the world now in my savage

I spent about 2 1/2 hours their looking at different rifles and scopes. 


I looked at the Remington Model 700 SPS *Buckmaster Edition*.  I looked at both the .270 and 30-06.

I got a new rifle last year...Tikka T3 .300 WSM Beretta. It has taken down a deer and bear with no issues. The shells are a bit expensive (48 bucks for a box of 20), but other than that, I dont have too many complaints. Shoots well, killed what I aimed at...seems to hold up. Best of luck with your purchase...and whatever you do, post pics of what ya get! Leaves quite an exit wound (I use 165grains)...but that is expensive. Plus...the family knows when it goes off..sounds like a cannon.

I have a Ruger 77 MKII in 270. stainless w/ synthetic stock topped with a 3X9 Ziess Conquest and have been real happy with it.  Sub MOA with factory loads.  Some other factory ammo the group opens up a bit, just depends on what the rifle will like to shoot. Your just going to have to find out what feels right to you as far as rifles go.  Alot of good options out there so keep doing your homework  and hopefully you will make there right choice for "you".

I didn't read through all the posts but you may want to check out the 7mm-08.  Should easily handle the game you talking about out to around 250-300 yards and is a little easier on the recoil side of things.  Rem makes it in a couple smallish bolt actions.... the model 7 and I think one of their Mtn. Rifle versions.
