Well now I'll actually tell the story.
Alecvg and I headed up into the hills for a quick trip after work. It wasn't long before Alec spotted the first bear.

It wasn't long before we immediately spotted two more bears. The second bear was a big brown/red color phase that was sleeping under a tree. The third was a much smaller bear way up high and hidden under a tree. That is the first time I have ever seen a bear sleeping like this.

We decided to see if we could get any closer. Right as we were moving into the trees to make a sneak on the bears, Big Red stood up. We thought maybe he had spotted us. Once we were within a couple hundred yards we figured out what made him stand up. A fourth bear had come out of the trees and was beginning to feed.

Notice how he has some hairless spots on his rump. I wonder what that is from?

I got some video of this bear as well. He fed back and forth through the meadow twice. He would feed until he got close to the first bear we met (which had moved uphill and closer to us by this point) and then he would run and feed in the other direction until he crossed paths with Big Red. Eventually he just moved up hill a ways and stayed out of the two bigger bears ways.

Eventually Big Red fed out closer to us and we were able to watch him for about half an hour before we backed out and headed to the truck. We were able to watch 4 total bears, 2 of them were feeding within 200 yards of us for over half an hour. None of the bears had any clue we were there.

Thats a big bear and kinda has a hump like a grizz
-
First.... That is a :mgun: for sure.
Second... I think the hump is visible due to the position of the shoulder....?
Third.... Depending where on the Nook, it could be some inter breeding ?
-
Great bear. Yes, posture is causing the hump. Just a shooter black bear, easily makes P&Y too!
-
OOOoo Boy! That's a big-un! :yike:
-
Beautiful...That bear hasn't missed any meals. I'm hoping thats the trend this year with such a mild winter.
-
Very nice bear!!!!

-
Man he looks long. Nice one!!!!!!
-
Nice Bear, thanks for posting the pic
-
That bear is so long it looks photoshopped. He would look real good as a full mount in my house. The taxidermists on here see $$$$ when they look at that bear, lots of length there.

:yeah:
It would be some pretty good photoshopping. :chuckle:
-
It deffinatly is not photo-shopped, the length really stood out to me too. Hopefully Shane will post the other pics of him!
-
Posted more pics!
-
Wow thats the first thing I thought as well, very long bodied what tell this fall and he will put some serious weight on and make for a true trophy for a full mount! Nice color as well.
-
Nice work shane, love the pics and video. I think the one with the raw rump has be doing a lot of rubbing in that area.
-
Or breeding! Haha. Did you guys see any elk or elk sign up there yet, maybe different area than Im thinking but looks similiar anyways. Usually theres several nice bulls up there....

That one with the hairless spots is the bear from the movie The Great Outdoors!
-
That's what I was thinking if it had a bald head it could be the bald headed killer bear of Claire county that John candy scared away :chuckle: :chuckle:

We went in again this weekend and saw three of the four bears again. Unfortunately they were not as close as last time. Here are a couple pics.

Ya sure do get into them Alecvg. Thanks for posting. Ole Red looks like he should make another appearance on Huntwa in the head competition... ;)
Good luck with it if you chase him.
-
Got in there one more time this weekend and saw one of the bears. Crappy pic, but he's there. :P
-
Went back in today, without Shane, but with my dad, saw one really nice bear that we haven't seen before. Got within 120 yards but the pictures all turned out crappy, so I doubt I will post them... but it was another great day in the hills!
