Title: tripods...
Post by: jackelope on March 03, 2008, 10:17:29 PM: does anybody have any experience with either of these two tripods? i am looking for a decent one for my spotter and camera. i have a big manfrotto right now, but it's too big to be lugging around in a pack...i think i'm sold on this little manfrotto, but curious to see what anyone else has to say. while i'd love to have a gitzo, i'm on a budget.

Post by: MikeWalking on March 04, 2008, 08:20:57 AM: I bought a SunPro, 39$ I think. Very light about 2lbs. It's only comes up to about chest height. but if you're on the ground that's ok. no real complaints but a ball head would be nice.

Just one thing to remember is they have load capacity,The Manfrotto you listed only has a 2lb Cap,which might be a little light for a bigger spotter.I've been looking for one for awhile and i'm going to bite the bullet and get the Gitzo Mountaineer 6X Carbon.

It will handle an 8lb Optic, that's pretty good! It closes down to 23"x3.5" & opens to 61" It has the ball head feature with quick release plate & quick action lever locks. It also has an underneath in center balancing hook to add weight easily if need be during windy conditions? Post by: jackelope on May 30, 2008, 04:05:17 PM: i bought a used slik 4400 sport II for now. it works great. it's probably heavier than what it should be, but it works. as time goes on, i will upgrade if i decide i need to.

It is a little lighter than the aluminum but the main reason i bought it was because it makes no noise when you pull the legs out or put them in. My bud has the aluminum and it is loud. You get that schwoooookunk as you pull the legs out. The thing I like about the aluminium one is the option to put your pod next to a bench and tilt the post at a 45 over the bench. Also buy the brunton ball head over the manfrotto, you can us it either upright or sideways its cool. If you want to check it out pm me I live in your backyard.

Post by: BC CHASER on May 30, 2008, 09:41:12 PM: I just weighed mine and it is 4.4lbs without the head and 5.11 with the head. It is 23 3/4 long closed and extends to 66 1/2 at its max. With the Brunton head in the upright position it is 75 1/2 tall. Does your tripod have independent legs or are they all connected? Mine has independent legs that have almost 180 in rotation. The legs can lay flat on the ground or on a extremely steep cliff two legs can be below you and one above. Its awesome! Like I said if you want to look at it I could meet you in town.

Post by: jackelope on May 30, 2008, 09:48:19 PM: the big one and the new little one i got both have independent legs. the little slik i just picked up is 19" with legs retracted and about 48" fully extended. for what i paid for it, it is perfect. the manfrotto one i have for photo stuff is huge...has got to be 40" closed up and 10 lbs. probably close to 7' fully extended. i will not be using this one in the woods for hunting or at the range. thats what the new/used little one is for.

the msrp was $223.85 and i paid $25 for it. the lady said they bought it a couple years ago and never used it. judging by the look of it, i would agree with this. the carry strap is still folded up and wrapped with the little twist-tie thing it came with. craigslist strikes again.

yeah, burris makes spotting scopes. it's not a great one, but it's a decent one. 15-45x60mm, xmas gift from the mrs.
