Any one of you guys or gals have any good bear field photos from the east side? I'm writing about Choke Cherry Black Bears in Okanogan County, and need a picture or two for my story. It will be published in August.
If anyone has hunted the chokecherry thickets and scored a nice bear, show me some pics. If your picture is selected, the photographer will get credit for the pic, and I'll send him/her a free issue of that magazine.

I assume you want them in the chokecherry bush????
-
How did you get to writing for that magazine?
-
You can send them stuff unsolicited. They really appreciate a defined format, such as what you see in every magazine. You do not have to provide photos, though you make more money that way. I'm trying to remember what their pay scale is, but you get paid most for a cover, then like a $150 for a color shot in th e article or magazine, and I think it used to be $75 for a black and white. One of the hardest things about it is they want it about 6 months in advance, so say this bear article, needs to be in about 6 months prior to the August or September issue.
-
Smokepole, make sure you mention how the bears are really not very dense and odds are way low that you will ever see one. Also, please state that most bears are under 100 pounds and there are no color phase animals. Oh yeah, and mention how the hills are steep.
-
Yeah dude...no offense, but there's plenty of hunters in OK county already.
-
Okay... instead of jerking my chain, why don't you first find out who you're dealing with. Somebody is going to fill this slot in the magazine, and it may as well be me, a real hunter from Washington.
I've been hunting mule deer in the Okanogan Valley since 1970. That's about 37 years, without missing a season. Always been a lot of hunters there. I guess we just like it in that area. People have also been writing magazine articles for decades, but the crowds in the valley are still about the same as they always have been. Okanogan is our largest county, and I don't see very many hunters where I go. I'd just as soon everybody stayed home, and I could have the whole county to myself. That would be cool, but somebody is gonna buy this magazine and page through it. So I'm doing this bear story.
Search my name on the web, and check out my stories if you want. I don't broadcast your honeyhole. I don't lie. You won't hear me bragging about huge mounts, and you won't see me measuring tines and scoring them up on a calculator. I'd rather write about my good hunting experiences, and encourage others to hunt and fish safely and ethically. Maybe pass it on to their kids. I consider it a bonus to harvest an animal.
I care about wildlife, habitat, and opportunities for kids to get out and enjoy the outdoors, just like you guys do. I'm not no pipe-smoking, armchair office worker pushing pencils either. I still have the boot leather for just about any Cascade peak -- clear to the top, gun in hand. I was there when Bearhunter shot his first black bear. Taught him to hunt when he was a kid. I was on the grunt end of that bear for 3 1/2 miles, and we took it out whole from an elevation of 6500'.
I got started writing for this magazine in 1992, and have had two dozen or so articles published in my spare time. I don't do it for the money, though. I've always liked writing, and I write about a variety of topics. I grew up reading Outdoor Life when I was a kid. Read Trueblood, Carmichael, and Gene Hill, too. Wanted to be like them. I do get paid $25 for a black and white, $50 for a color shot when I can dig them up. End up making about 15 bucks an hour if I type fast.
The editor contacted me to write this piece. He likes my stories, and most hunters really get a thrill out of seeing their pictures in the magazine. The bear needs to be on the east side, but specific location isn't too critical. No chokecherry bush needed, Bone. ;)
Got some...or not?
-
Kevin, I was just playing with you. At least half of my reading is about hunting and fishing, so I appreciate your efforts. If you want to talk about some hunting experiences up that way, give me a pm. I do not have any magazine quality photos, but I will ask the in-laws and see what they dig up.
-
Okay. You're off the hook. ;) Bone's a straight shooter, so he's in the clear.
I guess I just get wound up piss-tight when some whippersnapper calls me dude. Got it off my chest. :)
-
I'll e-mail you a couple Smokepole, or would you like me to post a couple here for you for your review then for you to get the full size. You may have seen a couple on here already.
-
There aren't enough good bear pics, so throw them up, Bone. I want to see...
-
I looked at what I had, and none are really magazine quality. shadows, blood, composure, etc.

Cool pic bows.....Yep Headshot I took that.
-
Hey those live bears are too close for comfort. That last shot isn't bad, Bone. Nice bears.
-
Just saw the photos on the first page. Great shots, Bone. Looks a little too close for me. I hope you were packin'!
-
I have one more of my brother with his first bear, but I need to find it and scan it.
-
Great pictures guys! Love the brown bears!
-
this guy didn't like the paparazzi and he ate my game cam
-
Bone are you a cowboy or do you just play one in the woods? :chuckle: Nice bear pics!!
-
I was born and raised on a horse ranch, but I wouldn't disgrace the cowboy name and call myself one. I'll have to get the rest of the pics up of that adventure. It was another great Kikendall father and son hunt.
-
Heres the bear that smokepole and I packed out of the Okanagon high country.

I know you cant use me in all your articles though!
-
This is one of our hunters with a bear he took at our place in 07.
-
Hey Bone, who was that skinny kid in those pics??
Nice pics guys... sweet.
Nah Smoke, the closer the better...whats funny though, is I woke myself last night was I was turning to run from a big charging black bear in a dream!! Wild.
-
Not sure if this will work for your story, but here is a spring bear.
-
Beautiful Bear timber, was that the Blues tag? Hope to get the nooksack or Monroe tag this year.
-
Honestly Timber, I think thats one of the nicest bears I have seen taken in Washington. It was also an awesome story and the live photos really excite me. On the rare occasion, I love getting a live photo prior to making the shot. THATS AWESOME. If I happen to draw this dang tag, I'd love for some of your expertise. Your bear knowledge must be pretty good as you have taken some of the best bear photos I have seen. The one for Photo of the month, and those two meeting in the meadow for example. WELL DONE. Thats a great field photo as well. I hope to open the magazine and see it. I don't remember if you are rugging t or mounting it. EITHER would do that bear justice.
-
Yes, awsome photo.
-
WOW that's a BEAUTY Timber!!! Congrats
-
It don't get much better than that...
Coon
-
I contacted Timber. This is an awesome bear shot. I can't believe the size of his skull. Looks like half grizzly. Yeah, it should be in the magazine!
That bear must have fattened up on chokecherries! ;)
-
Sure :chuckle: More like Hall berries the previous fall.
-
Timbers bear is what dreams are made of, that thing is awesome.
-
Great frickin bear Timber! Wow he 's a fatty ... nice job I love the color!
-
Great bear Timber, what a pig.
-
Thanks for the comments. Here is the original post.

I just noticed a Bear Hunting Forum was added. Great Idea!
-
AMAZING BEAR!!!!!
so pretty!
People hunt bears their whole life hoping for even a sighting of such a bear rather lone to take it!
Well done brother!
-
Yep what Longtat said!
-
Here's a couple from OK county.
-
couple harvest pics
-
Nice bear, did you shoot him out in the sagebrush?
-
Yeah- i was bow hunting for deer and saw him, so i switched to the rifle and put a sneak on him. I don't know what he was eating in there, likely hawthorn, mock orange, rose hips? But he tastes TERRIBLE!!!!
-
Thats too bad that he doesn't taste good, I guess you could just smother the meat with tabasco sauce or some the condiment to make it a little more bearable to eat. He looks like he would make a good rug though.
-
I remember seeing one of those photos before and thought it was a great shot. Too bad he tastes so bad! :chuckle:
-
Thanks guys-
We tried injecting the roast and wrapping it in bacon...i was not good! The dog even got the runs.
I'm having a half body mount done, coming out of the wall.
-
Did you shoot this bear this past season? And when do you get your mount back, you should post some pics of him when you do.
-
He's my first bear, I shot him in September- I'll make sure to post pictures of the mount when it's done.
-
Yeah- i was bow hunting for deer and saw him, so i switched to the rifle and put a sneak on him.
I always have a rifle with me during archery in case there is a target of oppurtunity. For all of you that know the law, can this get us in trouble?
-
It was in the truck.
There's a thread about guns during archery season, and if it's with youI think it's a violation.
I had the .243 along because there's a bunch of bears in the area and i knew there was a chance I'd see one.
-
Do any bears taste good? I imagine maybe one eating berries but I could see why one feasting on sage wouldnt be delicious.
-
Sort of like deer. Depends alot on what they are eating. If its where I think it is, these don't particular taste the best. They eat alot of ants and bugs, and not much on berries. Few chokecherries and I have found that chokecherry bears also don't taste well. Hallberries aren't too bad.
-
Blackberries and Mountain Huckleberry bears tasted great! Fish, not so much.

The bears I've killed were fine, but i've never killed one in fish and never even seen one in the sage, thats cool :)
