Alright, I just wanted to say thanks to all the people who sent messages to me and provided much needed information for my upcoming antlerless Moose hunt. I can tell you I was pretty surprised when the back door opened and say selected for a moose tag. I kept it pretty mellow until I knew it was final. When Monday morning came around and was able to verify the drawing, my hands actually started to shake a little. I never thought I would be so excited for an opportunity to harvest a Cow Moose. I pulled the tag with 11 points, thanks to the new system.. I still haven't decided when I am going to go, but I might just have to go during the rut as many tell me it is just a fun time to call them in. I am going to start out and try to harvest one with my bow, hopefully my dad or my buddy form Idaho will be there to video it. Just not sure if the old man will be able to get the time off. I am planning to make my first trip over there sometime in Aug to see the lay of the land. I have been over (with a fine tooth comb) goggle earth and flashearth just to see the area. I will make sure to post picks of scouting trips and hopfully a downed Moose when the time comes.
Again, Thanks to all who provided information. It is greatly appreciated!

Good luck.....I hope you fill the freezer.

Can't wait to see how it pans out for you. Take lots of pics scouting and hunting...
-
I'd go the first week of October, but I don't know how much luck you'll have calling a cow moose in. :dunno:
-
I say go in early October, call some bulls in, have fun with it for a day or two, then shoot your cow, no problem. Enjoy it though, it might be the only moose hunt you get to go on in WA, you may not be able to shoot a bull but you can still call some in and photograph them.
-
Sorry Bobcat, I meant doing some calling and having some fun with some bull moose while I am out. Not calling in cows. Hopefully there will be a trailer for me to shoot!
-
When I went on that same hunt with my dad, we never did try any calling but that would have been fun, for sure. There's enough open area there that you can spot them at a distance. You might want some bear spray or something to chase away the bulls after you shoot your cow. The cow my dad shot had a nice bull with her, and he did not want to leave her side. I didn't know if he was going to let us go near her. Finally after a couple of minutes he slowly trotted off. Poor love sick moose. :'(
-
Definitely do it with your bow, you will be able to in a couple days! Probably even get it on video! If you need some pointers, PM me, we've taken 2 out of there now.

Alright this is for PA. ;)
First of all, no pics (SORRY). I was way too excited to go out scouting and forgot the camera. Was not going to drive 250miles back to go get it.. lol. Well, I went out a week ago to learn the roads. Had TONS of help on this site to narrow the location of were I was going to hunt (Thanks Again). I left work early and made the trip from the wet side. I managed to to get to the spot around 1 in the afternoon. Pulled the quad off of the truck and headed up in the hills. Pretty nice area lots of timber in the draws with most of the south east facing slopes being older thick clearcut. Found two great lookouts that cover most of the area. Spent the rest of the day driving all the jeep trails and marking any location that I saw Moose sign. After 5 hours of scouting and not seeing a moose I decided to spend the rest of the evening at one of the lookout locations that I found earlier in the day. After about an hour of glassing and about an hour before dark I finally got a glimpse of a moose. I popped out the old spotting scope and sure enough a cow and a calf appeared! Damn those things are big :o . 15 min later another moose came out of the timber up towards the top of the ridge, slapped the spotting scope on this one..... small bull moose (Damn they are BIG :o ). Fun to watch but I have a cow tag... So, light was fadding fast and I jumped on the ATV and headed back down to the truck and called it a night. While I was putting my ATV away looked out in the field and there was two nice whitetails (4X4's) 50 yards away just lookin at me. Got all packed up and headed out to get some sleep. Thought it was a pretty good day. Day 2 started just like the the previous day ended. Went up to the lookout that I was at the night before. First thing in the morning out in the clear cuts was two cows about a mile apart (Damn they are BIG :o ). Did not see any calves with those two. Spent another 3 hours glassing and did not see any other moose so I decided to hit the trails again. Just needed to see were they went. Not a hard area to figure out. As the sun started to fade the second night went back up to the lookout did not manage to see any moose did see plenty of deer though. Went back down loaded up the ATV and headed out to the wet side to check the trail cam.. did get a nice pic of a bull elk. Anyways this is the only trip I can make over there. I have elk season coming up TOMORROW I will be out for the next 9 days. Can't wait to get back up there to moose country should be fun! I am going to head out after work on the 1st of Oct. My dad and a good friend or coming over with me to help and enjoy the experience. Can't wait......

Does he have a cow tag or a bull tag. PM me on were he is hunting, if he is hunting the same area I am and needs some help if he gets one down you can give me a call, we can help him pull it out if he needs the help......

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Woke up early on Sat morning and headed up to a lookout that I spent a couple days at during my scouting trip. Managed to get there well before daylight. As the sun started to rise we could hear Moose talking in four different areas. We figured this would be the day with all the activity. As the sun started to rise we saw our first set of Moose. A cow and a calf about a mile away in an old clearcut. About a minute later we spotted two cows and a calf up towards the top of the mountain that I was extremely familiar with. We talked about it for just about 5 seconds and decided to go after the three. It was about a 10 min ATV drive to the clearcut. We parked at the bottom of the clearcut and walked the skidder road to about the elevation I thought they would be. I started into the clearcut and about 100 yards away the moose were feeding. I waited for the largest cow to walk out and took the shot. 45/70 did the job. The moose was also ear tagged. I received a message from the WDFW vet and she told me that back in 08 this moose was tranked in Spokane. I guess she was walking around town. The relocated here up on Mica Peak were she has been for the last couple years. Again thanks to all the members, friends, and family that helped me on this hunt.

Congrats she will eat good :EAT:
-
Congrats FC, great fun, isn't it! Congrats. I almost visited there on Friday, to see how it was going, but ended up going fishing instead, couldn't justify the drive/gas by myself to the gate. So how was the pack out, how did you do it?
-
Wasn't to bad. 400 yards to the ATV. There was another person up there bear hunting that was generous and let us use his ATV trailer. So we just quartered and took every last piece of meat we could get and put it in his trailer. One trip down to the truck Threw him some beer mony and was back at camp by noon. Between my buddy and I, I think it took about 8 trips total. Was getting warm quick. I am still replaying everything that happen in my head. Kind of a fun short film :chuckle: I was told a bull and a cow were takin out on Friday sometime. No info on the size of the bull.. they were shot down on the lower road.
-
You are in for some seriously nice eating dude. Congratulations.
-
Nice work! What ammo did you use in your 45/70? Did you tip her over with one shot?
-
Lots of good eating right there, congrats!

Just took her to the butcher 348 lb just 4 quarters and scraps, neck meat, rib meat, ect. Never shot a Moose before so I do not know if that is big or not. She sure seemed BIG when we were cutting her up. Bigger that any elk I have taken. Should taste good...
