Title: 4 stroke VS 2 stroke engines
Post by: sisu on March 13, 2007, 05:57:56 AM
Besides the weight issue are there any disadvantages with the 4 stroke outboards?

Something to consider if your looking to buy. The EPA wants to ban the 2 stroke. I would have to look into it ,but I think they have a time line on when this will happen.

One problem with the four strokes is that they lack the top end speed and also low end torque resulting in slower hole shots.  Most of the better outboard makers are, or have developed two stroke engines that meet or exceed the emission regulations that brought for the the need for four strokes.

Thanks for the information. There is a boat and motor combo I'm looking at right now that has a new 4 stroke on a 2 year old boat. The deal is good but still expensive.
The seller is like me very thrifty, and very picky about his gear. The later appeals to me. I know once we set down to buying and selling it'll be like two Swedes at the fish market haggling over the price of lute fisk. ;D

Nothing better than 2 stroke fumes on a cold moring at 4am heading to your favorite honey hole

I like the 4 strokes myself. 4 stroke kickers are very quiet and reliable.

Ya, that smell still gets me thinking of all the salmon fishing I did in Alaska with the family and friends. We'd get the jet fired up and go zooming up or down river for the run. Makes me miss the kids most of all.
