My hunting partner and I failed to draw any special permits, so we will be hunting the general seasons, probably in GMU448 for deer and elk this year. This will be my first year hunting, my partner's 4th. My partner has never had a successful hunt, so I consider him as much of a newby as me. He is partnering with me this year because the guy that was supposed to be teaching him to hunt the last 3 years flaked out, and we are neighbors so meeting up will be easy. We have a few areas in mind to start scouting courtesy of a couple members of this board, so I am not asking for map coords or honey holes or anything. I am curious though what kind of terrain/features should we look for as a good area to hunt? We plan to get in as far off the roads/trails as our endurance on foot will allow. The plan is to start scouting soon here, and possibly even put out some salt licks as bait. Given that both of us are inexperienced hunters any information on how to go about scouting, and what we should be looking for while scouting would be greatly appreciated.

I've never hunted that area so i don't know the terrain or anything but IMO find an area were you would determine that most hunters wouldn't want to hike into and you should find animals.

For elk I would concentrate on North Facing slopes, find clear cuts they are likely to use to feed in and water. You know the basics, food, shelter and water. Find those you should find some game. Good luck.

If you are firm about chasing blacktails in 448, i would seek out a gated road that leads to some 3 to 5 year old clearcuts, you will find them early in the morning and late in the evening feeding. You can also slowly still hunt (take a step then wait and look and listen)the timber around the clearcuts.Dont waste your time elk hunting in 448.Do you have any reason not to hunt eastern washington?the reason i ask is you can SEE a lot more animals , which can make your rookie years hunting a little more fun even if you dont harvest anything.

Mainly because 448 is the closest to my house, so I would be abel to scout more often. I don't have any vacation time to use for it, so the closer to home the better.
