Post by: Gutpile on July 09, 2010, 06:21:48 PM
I've only shot two bears so far but there is nothing I've hunted that is as exciting as bear hunting. I absolutely LOVE bruins and can't wait to get out and hopefully bag another one. Just a little over two months for me. Less than a month for others. Man I can't wait!!!!  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

MH get your ars up here. WooHoo!!!!

I figured I'd give bears a whack this year for the first. So far all I know is to look out for berries & clearcuts.

Ill give you my opinion on this.bear yotes elk bobs, they don't know how a professional call is supposed to sound..Ive heard some cool elk bugling and some sick ones buy elk themselves..Heck listen to the different rooster crows. So there isn't a science to calling in that respect so much.BUT..how you present the sound is important..You can run a bob out of an area sometimes with to much pain in the call. You can also run off a bear the same..You will get as many different opinions on this as there are calls out there.Google real sounds of different prey in pain,or lost and listen.A screaming prey means something is getting it,Sooo that also means something else is there to deal with besides the prey..I could go on and on with this.If you can make the huntwa BBQ you will hear many different ways and techniques..BE THE PREY>>>>

saw our first one this year exactly 5 hours ago at 4:20 this afternoon.....was driving in to our area scouting and came around the corner about 1.5 miles away from our "hot spot" and saw one standing in the middle of the road.  he/she was on the edge of some timber and an overgrown clear cut and ran up the road about 100 yds before it took off into the brush...i guess it was about 175 lbs but it had really long legs that were flyin fast to put some distance between us....that'll get the heart pumpin...man I luv me some bears !  cool thing was my cousin was driving and the wife was in the back seat and that was the first bear she saw in a few years and she was pumped...now she wants to pull the trigger and hopefully it works out for her this year...she's never shot a bear

The spot I like to hunt has been getting hit pretty hard the last few years and this spring they started logging in one area again.  I'm going to have to start scouting and find an easy way in to some of the spots I found this spring.

Gotta wait two extra weeks in my area this year. Damn WDFW!!!!!
Hope my bears dont get too lonely waiting for me!
what the hell is the logic behind moving the opener out two weeks in the Mashel?
Surely WDFW must have had a logical reason for this????

looking forward to the opener. hoping to see one this year. still dont really have a place picked out, just kinda looking for bears while focusing on scouting for elk i guess. i find lots of berry bushes but never see any sign. bears should be in the area but dont seem to be.  :dunno:

I cant wait for August 1st! This will be my first year going bear hunting. I almost got a shot last year during Elk season, but i had my head down hiking back to the truck in the snow.

I Hope a week is long enough for me, because after that I cant do any more hunting till November because of football.  :(

I going to do some scouting on Thursday and find out where the berries are this year. Anyone else going to be hunting the Cle Elum area this August?

I have called in 14 so far.  It is effective, but I figure I call one in every 15 to 20 stands, so it's not automatic by any means.  Stick with it and it will happen.

Thanks for the info on calling, I plan on making it work this year, although I do like spot and stock...if you can figure out where they are. A few years back I found a high mountain berry patch that had seven bears working it...One was a grizzly sow with two cubs. when she was on the meadow the other bears would disappear and as soon as she would leave the blacks would come out....One of the bears was a big blonde boar that I just had to try to get and after a mile hike as the crow flies and up a 2500 ft elevation change I got my chance. from were i spotted the bears I couldn't tell how steep it was and when the big blonde came out and I got into position I was shooting almost straight up. 350 yards is not a hard shot if you are shooting fairly flat but I forgot to compensate for the angle and shot right over his back. Man was i bumbed at my stupid mistake...It had taken most of the day to get to the bear and then I blew it....OH well that what keeps me coming back for more if it was easy it wouldn't be as much fun.

PS  I haven't seen a single bear on that berry patch for the last 4 years...go figure.

Berries are still not ripe, and I'm still finding pockets where they are still flowering.  Apples have yet to ripen and fall...this may be the perfect year to more to play with calling.

I cant wait, 10 days and counting!! Have had good success the last three seasons. On the opener of last year i saw three in the first two days, and took a nice one the second day. Ended up filling both tags last year, one blackie one chocolate. Have been up scouting, and seen two bears in two trips, looks like it should be a good year. Have only called in one and the shot never presented itself, love the spot and stalk. HIT THE BERRIES!!!

I thought you had a spot picked out that you found on the spring bear hunt.  I know we found some spots to hunt bear this summer/fall.  Do you shoot at the Everett Sportsman's Club range on Ebey Island?  I guess it's closed for a couple weeks.

I have called in quite a few in August and September.

Called a color phase in, on opening morning last year. Just because you dont get a response...doesnt mean something didnt come it.

I was calling for my brother, I never saw it, he did...the bear was within 15 -20 yards of me.

Well this morning I was so excited that bear season is finally open.  So there I was warm and all snuggled up, when I rolled to my left I seen a bear, still not wanting to get out of bed I rolled to my right and there were two bear. Now I know I have to get up.

I jump out of bed ready to start blazing until I remember they are already on the wall...   :tung: :tung:

Have fun and good luck out there to everyone.

Joe

It was the comment about walking that road that threw me, not a very fun one to walk.
Steep down the Peaches side, wide open on the Quartz side, and a camp not too far away.
Were you walking back to camp, or just Glassing the far off area ?

I saw a small one on Sunday at about 125-150 lbs standing broad side at about 80 yards.  It was hard to not pull the trigger since it was not only 80 yards from me, but 80 yards from the road as well.  I've been out every evening except for tonight and so far thats been the only one I have seen.
