Title: grayback tag !!!
Post by: backwoods on July 18, 2010, 11:42:26 AM

Drew the Grayback quality tag!  A first for a deer draw for me.
November 1-23, 3 pt min., sounds like fun!!
I have hunted around the Windriver area before, but haven't
much knowledge of anything on the east.
  I am a Randle-Packwood area hunter.
Any suggestions or knowledge of  the area?

Yes, watch out for ticks! Should be a fun hunt other than that. A mountain bike would be good in this unit as most of the roads into it are gated. Or you can hunt right off the highway and do just fine.

horse or bike will be the best to get you in were the big boys play. dam cats have the numbers way down :bash: so will be a little tuffer hunt this year for sure. but if you ain't to picky and put your time in you should get a deer also bring warm clothes :chuckle:

TICKS ARE heavy... i decided to grow a beard this year and they must of found something tasty in there.. got back to the truck from the first scouting trip.. picked five out by the time i got home.. get off the road and you should be succesful.. Bucks go crazy up there in the rut.. just be ready.. and i mean that.. You ever been in so many deer that you had to jump out of the way.. happened to me years ago but I think its still the same during the rut.. cougars are taken there share... lots of no trespassing signs have plagued this area.. put on your hiking boots.. grab a day pack.. and your favorite weapon, You'll have a blast...

I don't know if this is the case in Grayback, but I saw lots of salt licks in the west-klickitat.  The deer we saw seemed to close to the licks.  It also seemed that wherever we found elk, we didn't find many deer.  Just might be me though.

Welcome to the site :hello: I keep getting 'not selected' for my grayback tag. Congrats! I'm sure your tag season will make the hunt very interesting. I've hunted that unit off and on for 17 years and seen the ups and downs in the unit. The last couple of years I've seen many hunters and too few deer. Your tag should reverse that. Limited hunter numbers and the rut-Good combo. I'd suggest getting up there preseason to scout, then again during the modern season, then return to the area with your permit and good knowledge of the area and enjoy the rut. Best of luck to you!

Good luck to you that is a very good tag.  Might be one of the most underated tags in the state for deer.  I have a buddy that has a uncle that lives in goldendale.  And he has killed some really big bucks in that unit during the general season.  I work with a guy that had the late tag last year and he killed a stud that scored 178 I believe.  I think that was the third time he has drawn it and all three bucks scored in the 170's.  He's pretty tight lipped about the unit but i'll ask him about it and maybe I can give you some info.

I live here and have the opportunity to travel around the county every day. Sorry but 170 are few and far between in Grayback. I will send you a PM of what I would do with that tag. Start scouting the area and realize some of the areas I will point you to the deer migrate into in October so don't get discouraged if you don't see big numbers in the summer months.

:yeah: i also live in goldendale and spend a lot of time in this unit. 170 are not all over the place. they are few and far between, there are nice deer here, and with the effort you should do fine. but i rarely see those types of deer come out of grayback. they are there and i have seen them but few hunters tag that type of buck every year and there is lots of hunters that hunt that unit in the general season. but you do have a edge with your tag, for the toads to show up.

I hope they show up in east county earlier than they did last year carpsniper. It was hard hunting we all tagged out but it took a little longer than normal. I don't have as much time because of my elk draw.

yep same here the toads did not come over the mountains and down the valleys tell late. most time we have about 3-5 deer hanging opening day last year it was one :yike: but i have high hopes  :IBCOOL: and i have a multi tag  chase the locals with stick and string and early muzzle, then the modern hunt and we can hope the toads have come  then i will hunt the muzzle like always. i say this because it would take a hell of a deer to make me burn my tag in the archery season or early muzzle or mod season. to miss out on my late muzzle hunt :'(

Yes it would. I saw a giant the second day of modern and missed him last year. He ran your way down Harrison. Hope he is back this year. The only 30" buck I have seen in the county.

Actually we did take pictures of the tail, but the camera had problems and this is the only picture we got of it.  I'm sure it is a benchleg, but it had more blacktail characteristics than mule deer.........

Just wondering if the Columbia Hills is in Grayback? Thought of doing some archery hunting in that area, but not sure if there is public land around. Kinda looking from Swale Canyon south on google earth.

yeah my cuzz shot a little bodied buck last year that had more blactail in it then i have seen in a long time it was about a 6 year old deer and was very stout for its body size not run down or anything. and that thing was like a normal 2 year old.

the columbia hills should fall under the 388 a lot of private ground over there for sure.

Most all of Columbia Hills is private. I really wouldn't waist my time with that area anyway. There are a few deer but better areas in 388 than Columbia Hills.
