Title: For ID and MT hunters - WOLF HUNTING TACTIC
Post by: haus on July 22, 2010, 09:55:18 AM: Maybe this is common knowledge to some, but its news to me. For all of you that are planning to hunt in ID and MT;

Hit the fawn/calf distress call and follow it up with a coyote howler.

One of my cousins in ID suggested this tactic. He's seen it put to use several times on wolves in central BC and in Idaho, they come in at a full sprint. Make sure you have a good vantage point ;)

Nothing special to it really as far as duration of each call, all your trying to do is make it clear that a coyote's hunting in their territory. I'm sure most of you have seen the video clip of a wolf pack running down and mauling a coyote......

Quite sure the boys in the Buzzard lake area are going to be interested in this tip also. ;) Tips like this will keep WDFW busy checking on their wolves. :chuckle: Hopefully they run themselves ragged. :chuckle:

My cousin mentioned the hound problems too, said the hound hunters can't run their hounds in wolf areas. Sounds like your friends came up with a good solution :chuckle: Intelligent animals so I'm sure they will catch on after awhile, but a lot will die before they do.

Might even deter them from going after Fido on someones porch.

....and save a few coyotes. Now thats somethin I thought I'd never say!!
