Hey all, I'm wondering what you use or recommend for a brake controller for a 2009 silverado 1/2 ton. It's only going to tow a 18-21 ft travel trailer. Been doing a little research and Tekonsha prodigy-3 has a lot of bells and whistles to do the job. Just not sure if I want to spend $140. So lets here the ideas and thoughts ;)

That P 3 is worth every penny!!!!!
The P 2 is a damn good one too if you want to save about $15.
The P 3's in the truck that packs the camper with a 3 horse trailer behind it. The 2's in the truck that just tow's the horse trailer from time to time. Had the 2 for almost 5 years and the 3 for a little over year. No issues with either.

You have the right brand i've owned 4 of them and use them almost daily for my work... i'm guessing you only are going to tow the 1 camping trailer? Is a cost benefit thing.... I have 4 different trailers with different # of axles... some are flat deck trailers and the weight rangers from empty to max load a couple of times a day.... The top of the line is the only way for me to roll... i don't lock up tires when its empty and the controller helps me diagnose wiring problems.... In my S10 i got the base one like 50-60 bucks for towing my hunting trailer... If all your gona pull is a camper trailer just get a cheeper one save the 100 bucks for repacking bearings and buying stuff to make the brakes work properly... if you see a car trailer in your future get a better one. :twocents: I get most my trailer supples from six robbles in Seattle... They are one of the major supliers of trailer stuff to trailer shops up and down the I-5 corridor and even have a delivery truck that goes to E Wa

I went a head and pulled the trigger and got the prodigy 3. It's more controller than I need and that's okay. Since I only have to buy it once ;). Now I need a trailer :chuckle: ;)

Have you wired it up yet? If you have troubles let me know, I've run into it a couple times on those trucks that came with a factory tow package, but they weren't fully wired up. Even though you can plug right into the box under the dash, the energize wire to the trailer plug needs ran and hooked up, as well as the power wire. Hopefully yours isn't like that though.

You'll love the Prodigy. I've been running the original Prodigy for about 10 years. Its been in three different trucks. I don't know what you get with a P3,but I can't imagine its any better than the original version.
It provides silky smooth braking even running at 20,000lbs combined (truck and fifth wheel).
If you want to save some money look for an original. They're usually about $95-100 online

My dad has the P3 in his Tundra for his 29ft TT and it works like a charm. However, he is on his second P3. The first one gave up the gusto one day. Not sure why. He ended up buying another P3 and no troubles so far.

You'll love the P3. I've had P2 and others many years before, but I've been using a P3 since they came out. Simply the best and worth every penny.
