Title: Moose scouting
Post by: DeerThug on July 26, 2010, 05:48:49 PM
So I am heading to Spokane for my first moose scouting trip.  I know it is hot but I gotta get up there and check things out.  If we get out early maybe can find one before it gets hot.  It will be cool to see a bull in the velvet...........

Not worried abount not seeing any.  Want to get our permits, learn the roads, maybe meet the locals, find some state land to park the trailer on, and maybe go to cableas<  I also know of a place that has cage dancing that is not too far away.  The boys can be there till 9 or 10 and they want to go.  So being good fathers well we are going to take them.  And being men I want to go to  GOODTIMES if that means anything to the locals...

Then there is the place that is next to cabelas , Matthew can drop us off there and pick the dads up later...

Will be back up at least one more time before season opens to learn what a nice bull looks like.

Yeah on the state line - instead of turning left into Cabelas go straight - can miss it.

Ok jus t back at home form the trip.  What a time.  We saw three moose all bulls.  One we debated on if he was a shooter.  So that is the question for Mt Spokan what is a respectable bull moose.  AND how do you judge  a good bull?  This one had a rack that was wider than his body 2 front forks - maybe 3 on one side.  One side had a paddle that seemed wide to me and the other side was not too wide.  Even thou he was still in the velvet we could not see any points on the paddels.  But it was a good trial run on the real thing.

I don't expect to shoot the biggest on in the state, but I don't want a dink.  any help on how to know a good bull would be helpful

Hey RIc - you should have come with us.  We had a blast!  We found the state land where we could park for free at about 9 Friday night.  Saturday morning we hit the woods.  where we found the moose.  We also got a great whitetail shed that had 4 eye guards (well 3 but one was split).

Saturday night we went to Cabelas - got Matthew a new pair of boots.  If you have seen the size of his feet then you would know why this is a big deal.

Then we headed to Hooters!  What a time.

The boys got the Hooters song sang to them.  "  You put your right hooter in - you put your right hooter out and your shake it all about.  You put you left hooter in..."  Well you get the idea.
I am kinda tired but it was worth it.

So back to huntingI did get my permit this weekend.
Looks like a nother good season is on deck>

hahaha love it! i think any bull is a good bull for what it is worth. but i would hold out for a bull with at least 3 front tines on one side and around 30-35"+ would be a very respectable WA moose
Title: Re: Moose scouting
Post by: jackelope on August 01, 2010, 07:34:45 PM
you could be holding out a long time if you're holding out for a triple brow tined bull. If you are he will likely be more than 35" wide.

thats  why i said any bull is a good bull if i had tons of time to hunt and it was me that is what i would be looking for if i wanted a trophy moose. and yes i kinda ment it as either or 35"+ or triple brows. yes the bull would probably be 45+" to have triple brows as well but one of those to would be my standard is what i am saying.

That was my goal and exactly what I got.

Good WA goal to have.  Figure moose are about 30" from ear to ear, even a 2.5 year old bull will have a spread of 35" or 36".  40+ and you are starting to get into the good bulls, 45 the real good bulls and anything 50 or over is a DANDY!
Title: Re: Moose scouting
Post by: GoldTip on August 02, 2010, 11:24:32 AM
My goal last year was something over 40" wide with split brows, finding triple brows on both sides is fairly rare.  I ended up with a 45" bull with triple brows on both sides, just happened to be the bull we called in.  But there is little doubt in my mind that if he'd been 40" with split brows, he'd have still hit the dirt.  I'd passed already on several in the low to mid 30" range, none of which had split brows.  In my research and my hunting I've found that a good rule of thumb for a GOOD bull is anything over 40" for a Shiras, over 50" for a Canadian and over 60" for a Yukon.  I know somewhere in the regs or in the Moose packet they send you you can find the average's for the bulls that were killed the year before.  I think all of the Washington Moose area's average in the 34-36" range.  Now that is cuz a lot of guys simply cruise the roads and look for a Moose that's "easy" to retrieve.  But as you can see from that average, a 40 incher is a darn good Moose.  Good luck and make sure you post up a story.

Also you have to find a Moose that you really like.  I'd much rather have a 36" bull with good paddles and points and split brows than a 46" wide bull with skinny paddles and a single brow, but that's me.

Hey guys thanks for the data.  That is what I am looking for.  The 30" ear to ear was the measurment that I was looking for.  You coud see some space between the body and the inside of the horns so this one was close...  I read one place that a bull is 9" from eye to eye, good to know but translate that into how wide the rack is... I can recogonize how wide a mulie is, as well as a good bull and ram.  They live in my back yard and I have spent a lot of time looking at a lot of animals.  I am going back one more time in Sept to see more animals.

Stay tuned!

Cool PaBen - What unit did youget it from.

By the way.  We have anot her cougar in our neighbor hood.  A lady saw it last night.   Night be fore last my dog was going nuts.  Based on his bark when we had one here a few weeks ago - I now think he was barking at this cat.  Next time I hear that bark I am going out with my light and an 06.

We saw three last weekend.  I saw one in the Huckelberry a few years back. and one in Wyoming during an antelope hunt.  Jsut need more exposure to the beasts  to know what a good set of horns looks like,

I've posted quite a few pics on them.  Check out some of the moose threads.  Timber has also posted some excellent moose pics for judgeing.  I trust his judgement emphatically.   Trophy is in the eye of the beholder.  Its all what you want to get out of the hunt.  Many drive the roads as they don't want to put much effort into packing one of those beasts out.  Others are hardcore.

I saw that cougar awhile ago while driving to work, drinking down on the Naches river, (If you are talking about that cat).  Its a fairly nice cat.

Mt Spokane area has some good moose.  If you aren't equipped to pack them through some thick steep terrain, lower your sights and take one on the road.  Brickle Creek is good, no great.  Thompson creek is OK.  There are some open areas on ridges you can glass from the roads.  That is wher eyou may find the real big boys.  The Boise land north of Blanchard hump road has quite a few moose too.  It is mostly walk-in though.  Good luck.  I'm still accumulating points (16 and counting, or is it 17 now)

Hey highlander thanks for more specifics.

I aint afraid of work and I have a job that if I get something down I can call in and take the week off.  I figgure that shoudl be enough time to whittle up a moose _ if it is cool enough.

The part of Thompson creek that I was able to go  throu had so many roads that there would be no point walking too much of it.  I am one of thoes guys that in elk season leave the truck an hour before the sun comes up and is back at dark.  Not sure that is the way to slay a big moose up there but I think I am on my way.

Both my sister and dad have drawn Mt. Spokane in the last 5 years and have had great hunts.  You're sure to have a blast!

Thompson Creek is where most of the hunters will be.  If I were you and looking for a 40"+ bull I'd hunt up top through the entrance by the ski resort.  There aren't as many openings but that's where the bigger bulls will be.  If you can find an experienced caller to go along with you you shouldn't have any problem bringing one in during the rut up there.

Good luck!

Thanks Alan

I did go up to the Ski lodge and spent some time there.  We saw a lot of tracks, but there not as many openings. This area did look like there would be bears there. Will probably spend some time there.

I found my first rut pit of the season last night, and he also shred some velvet and worked over a  willow bush pretty harsh.  Pretty early for the average moose, but maybe this guy isn't average.

how would you suggest hunting brickel? the snowblaze property composes what the park does not, by the time you get to inlands land they tore out the bridge and dozed the old road to the lake and it is now so over grown a dog would have to back up to bark.

one more thing to be dang careful of in the mt spoko unit is the scattered park land in there, they own a zillion little bits of land and they are 100% off limits.

Time to bring this back up.  Got the trailer on the truck, and ready to head to Spokane.  Gonna see some big bull moose this weekend!  Taking the wifes camera and will hopefully post pics on monday.  Looks like the weather is just right and they should be out.  Maybe I'll get lucky and see a bear.

Today is my birthday.  My wife got me the Kodi pack knife set from out door edge.  She wants me to cut that moose up with good equipement.  My son got me a great Remington head lamp - he has hunted with me long enough to know - well'll be skinning after dark at least once this season.

The mornings are cool and the first red is showing on the shoemack - get ready boys it is about to begin!!

OK so here is the story.   HAD TO  RUN AWAY FROM A BULL MOOSE!

Got up there Sat morning.  found a clearing and saw a bull right off.  He was wide. wide palms lots of points on the palms.  after like  seconds a shooter for sure.   And only 100 yards.   We went through the draw and saw a baby bull.  THEN nothing the rest of the day.

So Sunday came.  It was raining.  We went back to where we  had seen the bull on Sat morning.  I dec ided to try calling.  Now I am no Jim Shockey keep this in mind.  So we pulled up into the clearing and waited a few minutes after turning off the truck.  We got out and glassed through the mist.  Then I tried calling.  MMMaaauuggggghhhh as loud as I could.  Did that about 4 time is about 3 minutes.  Then we heard AAAAuuggghhhh.  AAAAUUUggghhhhhhh! And horns racking on brush.  This went on for a few minues and we dicided to walk down the road to get a better look.  We saw the bull about 125 yard across the canyon on the road.  He was trashing the trees.  Then he saw us.  So I MMMAAaaaauugggheeed again.  He turned, waved his head and started right for us.  We took off running.  In about a minute he was right where we were looking for the cow.  He kept callling and thrashing the trees.  He was ready to mount whatever was around and I wanted no part of that!

We guessed him about 44-46 inches wide - not much mass but a shooter??  A Great weekend in  Mt Spokane!

Getting closer and I am ready to kill a bull.
