With elk season around the corner what are you guys doing to get in shape? I have a gym membership lifting weights & cardio. Play basketball couple times a week. Anyone have any good diets or routines??

I hit the gym 4-5 times per week with a mixture of weight training, resistance training and cardio. To get in hunting shape, I do alot of treadmill work with the incline set at 15%. I usually will walk 5 minutes, run a minute or two and walk 5 minutes etc. This is a great way to prepare my legs for climbing up and down the mountains during elk season.

That's what I feel like.  I lift 3-5 times a week at the gym, then run 2 to 3 miles on the treadmill.  Trying to do some hiking, but can't seem to get out of the office as much as I should.  As soon as my truck is out of the shop I'll start hauling firewood for the winter, that'll help some...

Down to almost goal weight and still hitting cardio hard. Feeling way better with more energy. Lifting weights just to tone the body. I am actually enjoying it.

Never really get that far out of shape, spent the first half of the year doing P90X and Insanity. Started back therapy a couple months ago so had to lay off those so I started Riding my bike on my off days and a spin bike at work and really ramping up the cardio with some pushups, squats and crunch's mixed in. Averaging about 750 calories an hour burned give or take according to my heart rate monitor and an average HR of around 140bpm per workout. Resting HR was in the low 40s last time I checked. Can't wait to get into the hills and start chasing bugling bulls.

I'm not a saint , kenmoore gun club hill at night and the thaughts of elk in my head.

I used to live right at the bottom of that Hill. used to run to albertsons and back every morning before work. Also jogged it some evenings with the wife and pushed my daughter in the stroller. That is definately a good workout HILL.

This year I finally got a MT bike and ride to work everyday - been playin basketball a couple nights a week and lifting weights a couple nights a week. I have been able to squeeze about 115 miles of hiking so far this year and about 70 of those with my daughter in a backpack.... Really wish I  had time to get more hiking in but I am feeling pretty good - down 24 lbs since january and at my goal weight just need to work on endurance now.

been puting off geating inshape, and just took my first hike up a ridge i never made it up before, 3400 to 6200 elevation gain, figured a good way to brake in my new denali's. what a mistake, almost didn't make it, pushed too hard, and came within an inch of heat stroke, i mean throwing up, headaches, belly aches chills and couldnt keep water down, an awful experience. man i hate getting old, what sucks most is i found the motherload of elk, just like i was told maybe twenty years ago by a guy, now i don't think i will make it back without a horse. but i'm stupid so i think i'll still just have to try.

i am working for the forest service in st. regis/ superior montana for the summer working on the trails crew. there are soo many trails steep moderate and not too bad. they all are a bit harder when you are packing a stihl 460 28" bar  a couple quarts of gas and oil  then wearing your chaps, and all your ppe i also hike with atleast a gallon of water on me for the day, swing a polaski for digging trail/ cutting lots of stuff up. been getting warmer lately. hopefully this last month will really help out. a lot of the hiking has been at or near 7000 ft. so we will see if this helps a lot

Been doing 3 to 3.5 miles every other day for a couple weeks now. Tonight I only did 2.25 because I got a late start and I was running out of daylight. Every little bit helps. I mapped out 3 different routes that are at least 3 miles. So I can mix it up a bit. The other night I put my bow by the front door and as soon as I got back I nocked an arrow tipped with a broadhead and took 1 40 yard shot a dusk. It was dead on and less than 2 inches low. I was very happy with that.

agreed! I ramp it up a little before season but i stay in pretty good shape.

I almost think mental shape is more important. I am so into back pack hunting that I could probably out hunt people that are in much better shape than me just because I want it so bad.

the mindset is very important :)

Well,, I am in pretty good shape, but the air at altitude is a bit thinner.  So, tomorrow we plan on a hike in the morning. A trail the boys and I have never been on. I think we'll fit in more than another hike while on vacation too. Good for the lungs. Good for the muscles.

I agree mental shape is important. Combine the two and you will be unstoppable. I've pushed myself so hard before I was puking, blisters on my feet & thought that I wouldn't make it back to my rig. But if I'm in shape I can go farther alot easier!!

Monday through Friday I get up and head out the door @ 5:00am for a 6.5 mile run, get home and stretch, do two sets of push ups, sit ups, and back exercises, load the bike bag with lunch, head out the door for a 10 mile ride to work and 10 miles home after work.  I've been doing that or a version of it since 1994 when I decided that I was having a harder time doing what I wanted to do in the hills.  Lost 40+ pounds the first year and have kept most of it off since then.  I never really started a diet and don't really eat as well as I should.  Drink way too much soda, so that's where I'm going to try to focus this year.  I did manage to lead a group of friends to the top of Rainier in June and felt the best up there that I ever have.  I think I'm still in good enough shape @ 52, but I know it's really easy to backslide, so I just keep after it, day after day.

I always applaud anyone who gets off the couch and moves and continually tell people that even running to the mailbox is better than 99% of the people in this country.  It's probably THE hardest thing anyone can do to start an exercise program, but reading some of the success stories on here just confirms what I've found.  I'm sure all of you would chime in with me and say they never felt better even with the little pains that come from it.

When it comes to exercise, I always think of a line from the movie, Contact..."Small steps Sparks".  Just like saving money a little at a time, those small steps of exercise really do add up.

Keep up the good work everyone.  The elk and chukars are waiting!

Dave

always in shape, sorry but doing some exercise 3 mo before the season is almost pointless, takes some time to build up your cardio level.

Honestly, NOTHING could be further from the truth.

I agree 100% Machias.

that is complete BS, if you said a couple weeks maybe there would be some truth to that but 3 months is a pretty significant lifestyle change. Keep it up guys

Agreed.  Even if you are always in shape, and you decide to start training for an event (marathon, fight, sheep hunt, etc...), then 3 months will increase your cardio vascular and muscular endurance significantly.

3 months is a long time to get in shape, a lot of cardio conditioning can be done in that time.

Yes...3 months is great! I push the envelope and usually wait till about 3 minutes before my hunt... The 2 1/2 hour backpack trip into camp is my cardio training for my hunt!!  :chuckle:

Honestly...being somewhat young and in decent shape... thats about all i need... but...every year it gets a little harder. Maybe next year I'll move it up to 3 days....then the next year 3 weeks..... then...as time goes by, I might even go the full 3 months??? :P

i am working for the forest service in st. regis/ superior montana for the summer working on the trails crew. there are soo many trails steep moderate and not too bad. they all are a bit harder when you are packing a stihl 460 28" bar  a couple quarts of gas and oil  then wearing your chaps, and all your ppe i also hike with atleast a gallon of water on me for the day, swing a polaski for digging trail/ cutting lots of stuff up. been getting warmer lately. hopefully this last month will really help out. a lot of the hiking has been at or near 7000 ft. so we will see if this helps a lot

you're definitely going to be outdoing 99% of others.

that'll get you in mountain shape :IBCOOL:
just did 8 1/2 miles today  and followed some real fresh bull elk track for 2 1/2 miles of it.  i plan on harrasing there elk with calls and stuff before i come hm for the season.

Ran 3 miles yesterday and 2 miles this morning....when the hell did my knees start going bad.... :yike:
path finder    i have been using glucosamine  it is a vitamin that helps the cartledge or something in your knees. i have been using it over here in montana for just over a month and have noticed a little less pain while hiking the trails.

I recommend Crossfit, it will turn you into a hill-climbing beast. Winded won't be a word you know anymore. It's tough though, takes me 3 months just to feel comfortable after the required "warm up"

These are all me, myself, and I.  I've had quite a few folks tell me to get some of those folks that hang out in front of Home Depot, but that crap aint coming in my yard if I can help it.

38 pallets of blocks, 100 yds of dirt, 20 yds gravel, 4 1/2 pallets of redimix and about 30 pairs of gloves  = Fun Times!????? :dunno:
