Title: Parallax?????
Post by: PA BEN on July 28, 2010, 05:52:48 AM: I have a scope w/Parallax adjustment. Not sure how to use it. Other then it will focus my scope at various power. But the yardage on the scope doesn't line up with the yardage I'm shooting.
It's a 6x24x40, its a high dollars scope, Baush & Lomb Balvar.

For hunting set the for 100 yards most of the time as that will be good for most of the shot opportunities I come across and then adjust parallax for longer ranges when I'm looking through the scope.
How I set parallax-
When looking through the scope at a target, move your head up/or down, the cross hairs move, keep adjusting the parallax until the cross hairs don't move as you move your head.

If I jump up to 24 power I adjust it up until it clears up, but it's clear, (in focus), from close to infinity. So if I want to shoot at 500yds lets say, I zoom to the power I want then focus it w/the parallax adjustment. I haven't try the eye movement to see if the cross hairs move. So, without this adjustment does it through your point of impact off? I guess I need to do some long rang shooting to see. BTW, I bought this scope new in the box at a gun swap for 75 bucks. It belonged to a buddy of the guy I got it from, his buddy died and his wife gave it to him, so that's why he sold it cheep, his buddy bought it way back when and never put it on a gun. Adjusting the parallax may also adjust the focus but thats not really what its for.

Parallax adjustment is to eliminate change of impact with change of cheek weld, a big deal when shooting long range from field positions.

Post by: PA BEN on July 30, 2010, 05:58:27 AM: OK, that all being said, lets say I want to shoot a target at 600yds. I zoom up to 24 power, and set my scope at 600yds, but it's not in focus. I focus it and then do the eye up and down thing to see if the cross hairs move? How much can the bullet impact be off?

Post by: PA BEN on July 30, 2010, 06:50:26 PM: I went and sited in my gun today. Not to far, just 118 yds. At 10 power I focused the scope and at 24 power the focus didn't change. Sited it in at 10 power and then shot two at 24 power hit the same. So, is Parallax an issue at long ranges? And at what range do I need to worry about it?

Post by: Jamieb on July 30, 2010, 10:27:50 PM: Parallax has nothing to do with the power setting. Yes it makes a difference at long range. When shooting positions change a lot, like siteing in on a bench and then laying down prone shooting up hill, your head placement will be way different on the stock and so if the parallax is set wrong your point of impact is going to be off. If our parallax is set for a 100 yards and your shooting in the field at 400 yards, your shot could be off target enough to miss the vitals on a deer.

No need to be mean about it!

Pa Ben, set your parallax at 200m for most typical deer hunting and it will be fine, most non-adjustable objective type scopes are actually set at 200m, play around with your new scope a bit before hunting with it by looking through it at varying known distances or use a range finder. You should get a feel for the parallax adjustment but don't use it as a focus, your focus should remain pretty constant with your eyepiece, if you are getting out of focus you are probably trying to use too much power for too short of a range or you are seeing a lot of mirage from using too high of a power setting for the ambient temperature or are in bright sunlight.

Last night when I read this post I was just thinking, PA BEN, you can read everything on the web but it wont do any good if you don't just get out and shoot. By shooting and playing with the scope you'll learn a lot more then reading on the web.
Knowing what parallax is will shorten the learning curve so you have that in your corner.

Post by: PA BEN on August 02, 2010, 06:02:30 AM: Went out yesterday and at 100yds at 10 power I adjusted the parallax until the cross hairs stopped moving, then zoomed up to 24 power, cross hairs still didn't move, marked my scope for that setting for 100 yds. I can shoot up to 10 power at this setting at an yardage I want. I need to find a longer area to adjust the parallax at longer ranges at higher power.

Post by: eastside boy on August 04, 2010, 06:30:12 PM: PA BEN, I have that exact scope siting ontop of an older ruger like that.....chambered in 220 swift. I have had that set-up for 20+ years and have never had a problem with it........I think they are a great scope. :tup:

I used it for my moose hunt to spot moose 4 miles away. 10 power is all I need to kill all the animals I want. ;) I don't know if I posted this or not but I picked it up for 75 bucks at a gun swap, new in the box. ;)
