Title: Dumb Montana Question
Post by: Dmanmastertracker on July 28, 2010, 09:30:37 PM
If you have a Montana general deer elk combo tag and an archery permit, can you still hunt the rifle deer season as well?

yes, but it will cost extra and you have to have proof of archery hunting in another state.

Think you misunderstood. I have the archery permit already for MT and paid the fee. I also drew a general combo tag. Just wondering if I can hunt the general rifle season.

 Thanks

No, you can't hunt both.  You should turn in the general deer/elk combo so I can go hunting this year.  :)

Yes you can hunt both.  Your archery "permit" is simply a stamp that is sold to allow you to hunt on your general deer/elk tag during the archery season.  Montana does not make you choose your weapon like Washington does.  But if you do not fill your general deer/elk tag during the archery season, then you just wait until rifle season and pick up a gun and go hunting.

Thank You for this thread - I had never considered that as an option.  I will be buying an archery permit should I fill the multi-season elk or deer tag.

Any limitation on when you can buy the archery permit?  Do I have to buy it before the season starts or can I do it mid-way through the archery season?

Buy your archery tag whenever you go to MT for your hunt.  They're available at most Sporting Goods stores.  You'll need to show an old (or current) hunting license that was for an archery season (from any State); otherwise, you have to complete a MT Archery Course.

As long as you haven't already shot your deer during the archery season

Want to know why I love hunting Montana and have hunted there for 17 years?
I tore my achilles tendon a month ago today and I got 90% of my money back two weeks after sending my doctor's note.
Want to know how great Washington is?
They won't change my archery elk tag to a rifle elk tag because I put in for a preference point. Now I must eat my tag! I called and talked to a supervisor and explained my situation and told them I actually drew a special mule deer permit in Montana and still got 90% of my money back. There response, "We are not Montana, we do things alittle different in Washington".  :mgun:

I understand - I got 90% of my money back from Montana in 2007 when I ruptured a disc in my back that required surgery.  Sorry to hear about your loss of hunting opporunity.  Recover quickly

Puts you in mind of some guy at WDFW in a smokey-bear hat with mirrored sunglasses and a big toothy grin...

"...You're not from 'round here, are ya?......boy..."

As he walks around back of you're truck and busts your taillight with his billy club...

In this state? More like one with bleached hair and an earing in both ears. Or maybe like the cop that plays in Wild Hogs. Couple peace stickers on the back window of there truck That's a Washington WDFW posterboy!
