Title: just enough head wind + 2 too many beers + a flyrod you're not used to = bad
Post by: uncoolperson on August 01, 2010, 04:58:20 PM
that'll smart me..... or not!

ohh... the beer helped me forget to pinch the barb.... ouch! (gonna check all my flies for barbs now, aside from this one it's getting framed)

I was out whipin the fly around trying to figure out how to cast the new rod, with wind, and a little less than secure with my footing.... I'm all excited having a good 20 yards of 5wt line out and as all the line is coming back SMACK!

I knew exactly what it was, I had been watching that fly come back a little too low for comfort for the previous 10 minutes. So I started feeling around and following the line figuring I didn't feel anything it's probably in my jacket or something.

Then I find it.
I cut the line, pack up my stuff and make the walk back to camp (few hundred yards) to find the wife, I see this guy with his kid camping at the same lake (we'd talked some earlier, I've got to walk through his camp to fish from a point, so I asked permission) he askes if I caught anything.... so I say "yeah, me". The look on his face, and his kids face I was sure I had to have a gallon of blood on my neck. So I picked up the pace some to find my wife (vet tech). All the while thinking "yeah, finally get to use that first aid kit".

When I reached camp I covered the fly with my collar, and said "hey babe, you gotta check this out!". Then I opened my collar and received that look she sometimes gives me when I'd done something ridiculously stupid...

Apparently they arn't nice about taking hooks out of animals, something about sedation and pliers. I had to explain the fishing line method, but she wasn't familiar with the terminology of the parts of a fly (and had issues with me squirming). So I started to play with it (with another beer). Wrapped the line around (I'll admit, I wimpered some), then gave it a good yank..... OWWWWW!!!!! why'd that hurt so dang much, I start feeling around some more. In my semi panicked haste I had yanked on the line that was tied to the fly, helping burry it further into my neck.

After realizing my mistake, taking a shot breathing deeply, and correcting my method (+1 reason to find a small mirror for first aid kit) it came out easy enough. Didn't touch that fly rod after that.

Dang, you know there's scores of people in Seattle that pay a lot of money for stuff just like that.  I figure you could drop the fly in a cup of beer to sanitize then have them line up about twenty yards off.  At least that way you can write off the fishing gear, flies, and beer as a business expense.

Bet that stung a bit, hopefully no infection.

I was swimming in the Tieton once, part of a rescue drill.  Saw a line right in front and tried to avoid it.  Noticed I got a hook in the back of my finger.  Little bit disappointed about that.  Current was kind of swift there so it wasn't easy working out the hook, but I can hold my breath for a long time.  Guy must have already polished off his first few beers, he yanked the line to pull in his fish.  Gathered a bit of line for slack because that wasn't feeling so good and finally freed the hook and threw it clear.  Next guy swimming after me heard the guy bellyaching that I had released a big fish from his line.

Good reminder to wear protective eyewear when doing any kind of fishing, especially flyfishing. Neck is better than eye, I would say.
That first pic is a great shot. Nice storm brewing in the background?

not much of a storm the brief rain just ended then, mostly just clouds blowin around (in circles http://www.flickr.com/photos/uncoolperson/4851233131/#secret0f23671ba2-w500-h375in/set-72157624633408136/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/uncoolperson/4851233131/#secret0f23671ba2-w500-h375in/set-72157624633408136/) )
