Title: Our Bear Hunting Trip.
Post by: gasman on August 03, 2010, 04:27:46 PM
Rocky and I deciteed to do an over night back packing trip to hunt for bear. She has never back packed in, so this was a new experiance for her. We grabbed some dehydrated food for dinner and breakfast plus some snacks and we were off. It did not start that well, cause i forgot my boots at home on the rocking chair, so stoped in Enumclaw to pick me up a pair of boots  :bash: $70 and a pair of LaCross later and we on our way.
We reached our parking destination and headed up the trail. A short 2 mile hike in with 3/10 of a mile inclined that climbed 400ft  :yike:
With 65lb pack on my back, it was not an easy task for me. Seen a dozen elk on the way up and boy were they skiddish. All cows and calfs, but we think there was one small bull, but we never saw him again to verify he was a bull.

We set up camp, or should i say Rashell set up camp while i glassed the hill sides and clearings around us.

It was to late to get out so we just glassed, made dinner and had a camp fire.

And mine.

This morning i made a cup of coffee and started glassing. We had breakfast headed out. We walked the road system in the area we were and glassed the different clearings and ravine's. Did a few stands of some "blind calling" with no luck. We did get a few yotes to howell but never got them in to sight.
Seen 3 nice bucks (all spikes).

Ate some frsh strawberrys, and boy were they good, just a little small.

After 4 hours of no bears or elk, we dicited to head back to camp, regroup and head down the trail. I was dead all the way down. Hiked a couple of miles this morning hunting and 2 miles back with a pack on  :'( Would have loved had a helicopter pick us up and drop us off at the truck  :chuckle:

No bear sign at all. No track, no scat  :bash: and the strawberrys were the only berrries that were rips, every thing else was still green.

One last pic of the two of us.

What a great father-daughter experience!  So many teens want nothing to do with their dads - you should reward her with a puppy!

When we got their & it started to get chilly, I got all bundled up in camo  :)
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi79.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj125%2Fbabbygurl93%2FP1060289.jpg&hash=a8d6f5b13529f216ebcdc6cf877c524394e8fc3a)

Dad just stayed in his clothes he came up in because he's a big man, & a small skinny girl like me has no meat on her body to keep her warm, & yes we were both able to sleep in a 2 man tent, with a few mysterious rocks magically appearing, So at night we had to attempt our best & dodge them.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi79.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj125%2Fbabbygurl93%2FP1060288.jpg&hash=a3aa9bce74007aa70143e0217619b718f10b9c01)

But what dad didn't tell you is that we had a very weird break fast. We had originally bought Denver Omelette's. I read the directions & realized the night that we came up, that we didn't have a skillet. So for breakfast we ended up eating Strawberry Pop Tarts, Power Bars, Pepperoni sticks, & fresh strawberry's right from the ground.

I had Glow stick's left over & an Orange one became our best friend that night. We had a camp fire  :IBCOOL:
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi79.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj125%2Fbabbygurl93%2FP1060301.jpg&hash=965a3d6d28e1ef61daf20076a9c137adc7b5ef73)

My dads sweaty shirts. (You could ring these out & probably get 1 cup of sweat :EAT:)
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi79.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj125%2Fbabbygurl93%2FP1060297.jpg&hash=fd3d6c74018e11ae3edff68ef6a20b0c86438363)

& now, I am tired, Sore, & lazy. I do not want to go to karate tonight what so ever. I have absolutely no energy left in me at all. All I want to do is lay down  & sleep. I have 1 blister on the back of each foot & a mini blister on both big toes. I do not own flip flops any more because of my dads dog buddy chewed them up yesterday. So I am stuck with my slippers, I refuse to put on shoes  :) But i'll tell you that I did have bug repellent on this morning before we started hiking back down to the truck, I ended sweating it off & now I'm covered with mosquito bites  :'(

I know you had a great time out with the daughter. I feel bad for Rocky if you had a cup sweat in your shirt you probaly smelt really good in that in closed tent.

Gasman,

Cool.  I also was in the Little Naches over the weekend.  And yes, I also found a butt load of strawberries up around 5000 ft, they looked exactly the same.  I ate about 100 of them.  Forgot a spoon to eat my freeze dried Chili Mac so Sunday's lunch was jerky, pepperoni sticks and strawberries.  No other Berries though, anywhere.  Did see alot of bear poop though.

Good for you for sticking it out with Pops. ;)

Cool find, those strawberries. Regardless of the lack of bears, I bet you'll both remember it for a long time.

Cheers.

Trips like these are what memories are made of........

I have been told, "You sure have a lot of stories" (by more then one person) and my responce to them is, "you gotta get out and do it to make those kind of memories". and i like to just go and do it....... Planed or spur of the moment, i am gonna do it........

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention we did see two Turkey Vultures on our way in, they were feasting on a dead elk.
