Got lucky and havce both elk and elk multi-season tags. Looking at buying a muzzleloader and can't decide. Looked at both the T/C Northwest and the Tradition Vortek Ultra-light any input on tese would be most helpful.
-
make sure the vortek you are looking at is good for washington state there is only one of the vorteks that is from what i understand. the northwest t/c only has a 1:48 twist which was designed to shoot conicals and lead round balls. 90% of the people that have got them have not liked them and got rid of them or taken them back because they want to shoot sabots and they don't shoot them well from what i have heard and read.
-
Thanks found that post. The Tradition is WA legal. It's the Vortek Ultra-light Northwest Edition has the exposed nipple and brreech with 1:28 twist.
-
o.k. just did not want you to get one then be like o crap :chuckle: being new to the muzzleloader market some people do not know :chuckle: then i would go with it! looks like a nice gun
-
Thanks again. Mainly a bowhunter but want to utilize those tags. Didn't relize the barrel twist made such a big deal.
-
yeah the quicker the rate of twist the more spin as well. it can make a huge diffrence! i have looked at the ultra light as well and i am thinking of maybe picking one up as well. i already have 2 muzzle loaders and they are both fine and great but i am a freak what can i say  must buy :chuckle: looks like a very nice gun and it should take musket caps which is a real plus for me because i will not shoot 11 any more since i switched i will not go back. i want to call and see if i can get a tumb hole stock to put on it as well  :chuckle:
-
I just bought the Vortek, havent shot it yet but it looked like one of the better ones out there. I like how easy the breech plug is to remove.
-
Bought the Vortek. Cant't wait to shoot it.
-
Is this Vortek new? I've never heard of it? I'll have to check into it.
-
here you go bobcat: only info i could find online, but i have found a few places have them in stock. pretty sweet looking gun. i am think of ordering one myself whats 3 muzzleloader :dunno: :chuckle: and they said it will shoot muskets as well  it is new for 2010 hope this helps and adds some real quality to my posts ;)

this gun is not on there web site yet i looked today.
-
Thanks, and looks like your punctuation is improving! :)
I think I want one of these now too. Even though I don't really NEED more than one muzzleloader. :dunno:
-
this gun is not on there web site yet i looked today.
Yeah, I looked. I found one that has the same number as the Northwest model, except it doesn't have a "w" after it. So I'm assuming it's the same gun but just has the 209 primer ignition instead of the musket cap.

yep that is it. i talked to the factory today, and that is what they said as well. 11 and musket.
and.i.punctuate.well.when.i.want.2. :P :chuckle: :hello:
-
You guys have any suggestions for bullet and powder for deer and elk
-
triple 7 powder and the new barnes bullet
-
dam i juts talked to a guy at traditions again :bash: now he said they are #11 only no to big of deal but i am a musket cap guy. he said it is not desinged to shoot the musket caps which why in the hell it would not be i don't know. hell the vortek is made to shoot the 209 which has way more pop then the musket cap. :dunno: i would think a new musketcap nipple and a guy would be good to go.
as far as bullets the best lead bullet i have found and trust is the dead center poly tiped bullets, shot them for year they shoot great hold together well and have never let me down. if you want to go copper the best one i have shot is the barnes tmz, they are a very solid bullet and shoot pretty darn good. i have tried just about all the bullets out there and these are my faves. one of the last ones i have not tried is the harvester bullets and i am going to try them this year.
-
Thanks for sharing - I had not seen the vortek ultralight yet. What do they price at?
-
$439 to $479

Are you saying you cant shoot a musket cap out of the Vortek?
-
What grain bullet?
-
Are you saying you cant shoot a musket cap out of the Vortek?
that is what 2 tecs that work at traditons told me today! they said no and that it would void the warrenty on it :dunno:
musket caps shoot fine with it. I have not had any problems.
did your come with a musket cap nipple or did you buy one and put it in it. i know they make one that fits, it i saw it one there web site. but if it comes with one from the factory, the tecs i talked to must not know what they are talking about. let me know please, the first person i talked to said they were o.k. so i don't know what to think :dunno:
-
What grain bullet?
of the tmz? if so they make 250 and 290 both me and my cuzz shoot the 290's. in the dead centers they make them from like 200-340 grains for 50 cals i always shoot the biggest ones the 340's
-
That Vortek is a clean looking gun, probably gonna add it to the collection. Which retailers have been carrying it?
-
the only one i have found so far is the ranch and home in the tri cities :dunno: i called sportsmans there and they said they had not seen it yet.
-
You can order it online for $380 here: http://www.thegunsource.com/item/320369__Black_Powder_Firearms_Traditions_R562020W_Vorte.aspx (http://www.thegunsource.com/item/320369__Black_Powder_Firearms_Traditions_R562020W_Vorte.aspx)
And being a muzzleloader, you can have it shipped right to your door, no FFL required.
-
yep, you would just save shipping if a local store has them. but pay sales tax if in washington :bash: proably about the same as shipping
-
Thanks for the info on the retailers, I will have to check around my neck of the woods. For those who own the gun already how is the shooting out to 100+ yards? Which bullets have you shot out of it that have worked/not worked?
-
loose smokelss poweder and a musket cap , i've found it fires better than pellets , I'd go for the 270 bullet for tragectory. good luck on your season , Unload the barrell dailey to keep from missfiring.
-
Man, all this talk has me freakin' pumped for the upcoming season. :rockin:
-
yep, it can tend to do that :chuckle:
-
Carpsniper- I went out this weekend and shot the Vortek with Musket caps and 100 grains of pyrodex 7. I shot 15 rounds and had no problems whatsoever. I just wanted to let you know.
-
yeah, i talked to another tec today. he said that it is not supposed to be used with musket caps and that is why they do not supply one with the gun. you have to buy a aftermarket one to use them ,and he said the gun was not built to use them. i don't see any harm in using them just get the thunder nipple musket 8mm threads and put it in place of the 11. it would work the same, i have talked 2 3 other people doing this and have had no probs. but if you ever have to send it back in for anything you better not tell them you were using muskets. because i was told again today that, using them voids the warrenty :chuckle:
-
yes they said the frame/firing componets on the gun is built to lower specs then the reg vortek and not as strong and the musket caps have more power to them and can damage the frame and firing componets with use of the musket caps. that is what i was told by 3 diffrent tecs
-
but the charge remains the same, just the ignition has changed. Doesnt make sense :dunno:
-
yeah, i know it does not make sense. granted the muskets have more fire but i would not think that would hurt the gun. :dunno: but like they told me if the gun was ment to use musket caps they would have supplied one with the gun and the number 11 so the people could have a choice what they wanted to use. but sense the gun was not bulit to use them using them would void the warrenty. just what i was told.
-
no prob i am still debating if i want to buy one. just make sure if you have to send it back you pull the musket cap nipple out and screw in the number 11 :chuckle:
-
we have been shooting the musket nipple for a few weeks and have not had any problems so far i think it is fine
-
i just took my vortek back, had a big problem with it. i would say follow what the manual says to do and what not to do ;)
-
what was wrong with it
-
had faulty part, that let it go bang.when it was not supossed to :yike:
-
:yike: :yike: :yike: :yike:
-
yeah tell me about it, lucky it was in my lead sled or it would probably of broke my jaw and nose if i had just set up my bads
-
wow that sucks did you get a new one or a different gun :hunter:
-
just got my money back. i have 2 good ones already.
-
New to the forum as of today! I stumbled across this forum doing an engine search, wished I had found it sooner! I started black powder last year and got hooked. This thread caught my attention on the vortek. I have been researching this ML and others for some time. I finally purchased it today from cabelas, so we'll see how it performs to the old brand X I originally bought...Good info, i also hope to share what little I know too! :brew:
-
welcome! hope you have better luck then i did with it. :chuckle:
-
Thanks, will give a report..
