Title: Minimum score
Post by: 1bugman on August 09, 2010, 09:00:38 PM
Got drawn for Alkali any elk this year. ( I think I said this once or twice :chuckle:). Wondering what everyone's minimum score for a mount would be. I know a trophy is different for every one. Heck, he little 3x2 muley I got last year was one of the best stalks I ever had, but what would your starting minimum for elk be. Just asking. :hello:

If it's a great hunt, and likely an opportunity you will rarely if ever have again - whatever you kill.

If you eat tag soup, anicely  matted and framed license/permit/photo from the hunt is a good memento.

I will fill the tag. But won't pay for a little guy to get mounted. Just looking for honest numbers and good conversation.

It wouldn't be about the score for me. I'm with Doublelung.

It's all about the hunt for me.

Good enough.  Most elk 280 up look pretty nice.  Depends on how many elk mounts you already have, how much space you have for them, how many you would potentially want, etc.  If just for impressiveness of the antlers, nearly all elk over 330 look BIG IMHO.  A lower scoring bull with mass looks more impressive to me than a higher scoring less massive elk making it on tine length.  Really, though, it's all in your eyes and standards - it's your tag, and your money, and your the one who will look at it every day.  We're just the peanut gallery.

Don't have an elk mount yet, and the numbers you just said are what I'm looking for. At least that is what I'm selling to my wife. It's been a long time since I have had the chance to hunt a bull elk for real, don't count  spikes as real bulls. so this should be fun.

Personally I will mount anything, they all look good on the wall  ;) But realistically, I would say a 260 and up Rocky would be a mounter, 200 and up for Roosies.  ;) Or whatever you feel like when you get the sucker down. You may kill a nontypical with a big club growing down his head too, I think that would clasify as a mounter.

Oh, ya. All bets or off on a nontyp. any thing cool and the wife losses the battle  :IBCOOL: for now :bash:

There are some toads in there.  My buddy shot a 7X9 that scored 354" a couple years ago, so keep you eyes open and get ready to do some leg work.  Look forward to seeing the pictures.  The NW units and south units seem to hold the most elk when I have been in there.

Yep, the edges are the best and there are some nice bulls. between archery, muzzy, and my Modern there are 35 permits. but the guys I have talked to say there are only 17 Nice bulls. Hope the Archery and Muzzy guys don't do TOO well.     OH what the Hell I hope they do great too.

I have a 287 skull on the wall from an awesome archery hunt.  I like it so much, given the opportunity I would probably put a 330+ skull on the wall too, and trade that big bugger's cape off for the dirty work.  BUT, I love deer, goat, sheep, antelope, etc. shoulder mounts.

Just pull the trigger on whatever looks good thru the scope.  You might take a look at euro elk mounts, they are affordable and look cool.  I prefer those to the hairy mounts myself.  Even a smaller rack will look good in euro on the wall.   My 347" bull that I got last year looks great as a euro and I have no regrets for not having a shoulder mount.

SCORE, SCORE, SCORE!!  :bash:  Just shoot something that you like. If you liked it enough to shoot it, and can afford it, mount it!  :P
