Title: Where To Put Those Pesky Pins?
Post by: konrad on August 13, 2010, 05:08:03 PM: Just relating to the way things have worked for me these past six decades to my sight pins now has me asking:

If I have set my pins at distances ranging from 10 to 60 yards, would the odds be better that my Ghost Buck will appear at a range of…oh say…35 yards?

Would I be better served with pins set at the standard 10 yard intervals only beginning at 15 yards?

The more I ponder this question, the more able I am to convince myself Mr. Bucky Buck will show up at 43 yards, or 37 yards or any number other than a yardage ending in zero.

What do the gurus say?

Post by: carpsniperg2 on August 13, 2010, 05:16:28 PM: it kinda depends on your bow/setup. my xforce i shoot is 83lbs and blazin fast i shoot 1 pin to 40 yards then i have 45/50/55/60 but i am kind funny about things like that i don't like to have to guess what pin is closer. i would say figure out your max distance and then set pins to have as little gap as possible. like say you will only shoot to 50 and have 5 pins. well say the first pin is good to 30 yards i would then do a 35/40/45/50 but thats my :twocents:

I don't like guessing and that's how it always comes out.
I do fine using the pin. It's the "bracketing" that fouls me up.

Post by: MIKEXRAY on August 13, 2010, 05:27:43 PM: It does not matter if you set them up for 20,30,40 or 25,35,45 because you still have to know where to aim if he comes in the middle of your pins. Odds are when you range him you will not have the exact pin he is at. My 20 pin is dead on down to 0, then I have 30-60 yards, I also practice a lot at all ranges in between my pins. It is very important to get this figured out and probably is the biggest cause of hitting high & low on animals. You have to be a little more precise than " 40 yards add a little " Good luck. Mike

Post by: carpsniperg2 on August 13, 2010, 05:29:22 PM: yep me as well. i got tired of it with my old bow and learned what range i could get away with what pin. i had them set in 10 yard increase and anything 5 or more got the higher pin and i might be a few inches high at most and on a elk it would still get the job done.
IE: 33 yards use the 30/ 45 yards use the 50 etc i hated trying to hold the pins even on a animal/target and bracket them :bash:

Post by: Button Nubbs on August 13, 2010, 08:58:27 PM: If you have an intimate knowledge of your bow and where it will shoot gapping pins shouldn't be much of an issue.
Here is the way I do it for example:

4O-43 yards- hold 4O pin from dead on to a little high
44-46 yards- gap pins for 45 and hold a little high or low depending on the yardage.
47-5O- hold 5O pin a little low to dead on.
It may seem complicated or confusing but that's what works for me.

You say you like the pin to be right on and then go on to say that gapping pins is not a problem for you in the same post! Which is it?! Since you shoot one pin to 4O what do you do when its a 2O yard shot? Hold under? :chuckle: :rolleyes:

see :bash: not gaping with my pins :bash: never did i say in the same post i said with my trad bows which have no pins :P

i hold my first pin right on all the way to 40 yards period! i hit about a inch high at 20yards if you must know. :chuckle:
and at 40 its about 1.5 low :P

yes if you know anything about traditional shooting or own a traditonal bow you would know a thing or two. i own 14 bows as of this second! 4 of which are recurves and i also shoot another 4 that have no sights. i shoot instinctive with those 8 bows! so yeah i am seriuos i proably shoot about 1000 arrows instinctive each year. how i shot my elk last year as well. so

o and it was
