Title: Pet loads for 7mm08?
Post by: GoldTip on August 22, 2010, 09:42:11 AM
Just picked up a Stevens 200 on clearance at Cabelas in 7mm08.  Have been interested with this caliber and this was a steal, it's a nice light little gun so I grabbed it up.  Anyway, anyone got any pet loads for this caliber.  Plan to use mostly for deer, but the occasional elk/bear can also be on the menu when hunting Idaho or Montana.  Thanks.

I shoot a Rem 700 BDL in 7mm-08 that likes 140's over a near max load of 4064. At a wee bit over 2800 fps, mine is 1.91 hi at 100yds, even at 200, 8.3 low at 300, 24 low at 400.
I have mine set up with a shielen trigger at 1.5 lbs.  Leopold 3X9 with fine crosshair with a 1MOA dot. This setup puts the whoopass on deer. I use this setup for bear as well and don't feel under gunned. On the other hand it isn't fur friendly on the coyotes, but there have been no spinners. :chuckle:
I set the OAL to jump lans about. 020 so there isn't any magazine problems.
Hope this helps, I'm sure you will really like this cartridge.

45.5gr of RL-15 under 120gr NBT for 3000fps
I bought my 7-08 as a lightweight packin deer rifle but its so nice to carry and fun to shoot that I take it hunting more then any of the other rifles in my safe.
Today I took a little bike ride in the hills looking for bear, about 11:30 it was getting warm so I stopped for a rest and decided to do some shooting as my hunting was pretty much over for the day.

I set a 6" rock at the base of a stump at 550yards across this cut.

The wind was coming start from behind me at a constant so I didn't need to adjust windage.
After shooting the rock 8 times I dug through my bag and realized I didn't have any more ammo so the day ended early.

This will be a good thread for a while. I just started working up a load for my 7mm-08. Mod. 70 win. youth ranger. My OAL is .020 back. I chambered one round and worked fine. I'm new so I didn't put in two rounds, :bash: they are just a tad to long to fit in the mag. :bash: They didn't group will at all, 1 to 2" at 100yds, so I hope setting them back a little will do the trick. I will be back. ;) BTW, I know 1 to 2" is good for hunting rounds, but I like to stack them on top of each other. :chuckle:

For powder, H414 and Varget.
I load 140gr Barnes TSX and 150gr partitions for elk, TSX is like match grade accuracy.
I think the Barnes 120gr TSX was made for this cartridge.
Would like to load some lightweights for coyote, but never have.

140 Sierra Pro-Hunters over Varget.

I think I have a load for my 7mm-08. 140 gr Nosler Accubond, 38gr Varget, large rifle Win. primer. My nosler book says this is the most accurate load tested. It's on the low end of the velocity (2610). I'm going to start upping the powder to see how they shoot. Max load is 42grs (2849 fps)

Try max loads of IMR4895, IMR4064 and Varget with your choice of 140 gr bullet.  I prefer the bonded bullets myself since these loads chrono at 2900-2940 fps.  I have had good luck with 140 gr Nosler AccuBonds for big muleys and bear.  I dropped a 5x5 elk at 200 yards with one shot to the shoulder with a 160 gr Barnes X a few years back.  Theres alot of horsepower in that small cartridge.
