:) Ok here are the parameters: this is for deer/antelope size game, I have a 243 all set up, I have a 300 WM all set up, I have lots of other rifles smaller than 243 and larger than 300, so confine your choice please.
I want an in "between" rifle, I am thinking 7mm-08, 270 or 270 WSM. make your arguments please!

6.5-284
Extremley accurate, short action, high BC bullets, can have a light rifle that wont beat the heck out of you.
-
Pretty hard to beat the .300 WM.
The .270 WSM probably has the most gain in short mag.
The .257 Weatherby probably is best mid performer.
If I were goimg in the middle it might be a .260 in a Sako.
-
I was going to say that....6.5x284, 6.5x47, 6.5-06......at least 8.5 twist and it will spit 142smk's way out there. my next favorite is the 257wby. that thing is like a lazerbeam. I have taken deer, elk and bear with mine and it put them down every bit as fast and hard as my 300rum and 338 did. a lever gun in 45lc or 44mag is a riot and cheap to shoot too.

25-06

7mmmmoh8 because it sounds sexy ;)
hey thats my whole argument :)

Yeah 8)

I would go with the 270 WSM. This is obviously not something you NEED. If it were, I would say get a practical cartridge like the standard 270 Winchester. So I would just get something fun, and a little bit different. The 270 WSM would be perfect for your intended use.

25-06

270 win has never let me down deer hunting. It's a great round
-
The .270 Win. is an awesome round. Jack O'conner called it the perfect sheep cartridge. I think what is so great about it is the flat trajectory with mild recoil which equals accuracy.
I also really like the 25-06. It is a great dual purpose round.

257 or 270 WBY :twocents: 25/06AI Shows promise :chuckle:
-
i really like the 7mm-08 huge range of bullets great caliber good knock down. but i also love the 270wsm one of the flatest shooting guns out there with a big selection of bullet weights as well. i also have and like a 25-06 but most times bullets are 90-120 grains so for your choices.
less then 200 yards avg shoot 7mm-08 more then 200 yard avg 270 wsm :twocents:

.270 ammo is cheaper than a wheatherby a lot
has hardly any kick
super accurate
plenty of nockdown power for anything in this state
-
How about a .260? Mabey a Ruger with a cool paint job?

I've been personally faced with the same dilemna, have a 25-06 for antelope and smaller deer, Have a 300 win mag for elk/bear and when deer might also be on the menu. Have a 325wsm for the Moose and big bears of the world, so was looking for a "tweener". Went with the 7mm08 in a Stevens. Short action, light weight, inexpensive. Have yet to shoot it but all reviews are good and it's really just the older model Savage, which was not pretty but always got high marks for durability and accuracy. Weighs just over 6lbs and will wear a lightweight 2-7 scope.
-
7mm-08 if you reload.
With TIKKA discretely engraved on the barrel.
6.3lbs of pure huntin stick.
Otherwise, just take advantage of the incredible ammo selection available in .243
-
I have been really happy with my 270wsm. It is a Remington 700xcr. Shooting handload 140gr. Nosler Accubond flat hammers mule deer. Taken them from 85yds. all the way out to 550yds. so far.

257 Weatherby Mag! :IBCOOL:
-
:)Thank you all!
OK: I like the short action, the difference. long range performance.
7-08 sweet low recoil accurate shooter.
270 wsm/ factory loads smoke the standard 270, reloads they are about the same. So how much shooting do I do at/beyond 400 yards.??
I am thinking if I know 400 yard shots are on the menu, I'll use the 300WM anyway. so for a light, deer killer, normal ranges.
I am thinking
Winchester Featherweight 7mm-08, 3.5X10X40 Leupold VXIII
I own tikkas, Remingtons, I own winchesters, but no shooters just collectors. Kimbers. S&W, Ruger, Beretta,

Since you have the light and heavy game guns, I vote for an AR in .308. Reliable, tons of ammo choices, can do smaller deer types all the way to black bear and maybe even elk with proper load and discreet trigger. Plenty of manufacturers are going with the .308 as their hunting AR caliber. Better availability than the 6.8 (not a bad choice either).
