Title: Bear Bownanza
Post by: Ray on August 28, 2010, 04:52:22 PM
Hike 16 miles into the high country and into 11 bears today. 4 cubs and 7 adults. Didn't even bring one home but I will be back. I could have shot one and have a little bit of video of him at close range as well as some other crappy video coming online later.

Wow - never had so many of those things running around me before.

The one I passed on was only 150lbs and was in at 15 yards for 20 mins waiting for a good shot. Lots of brush but when it came time to shoot I decided that there were potentially better bears. Then another one above looked better. He was only 150 yards away. Went up and played around with big cinnamon and he saw me coming and turned on his turbo boosters.

This guy was the one I passed on. Little. Got in close for a while and watched him eat some roots and grass. Then saw big cinnamon.

sow with cubs. Didn't know it until I stalked in to 50 yards. Cubs were real small. Then another bear showed up. Distracted me and it took me another 30 minutes to figure out I was looking at two sows and four cubs.

When you have a day like that it really doesn't matter whether you kill or not. NICE...

Was out all day yesterday. I really made about 6 hours in attempts to harvest that big cinnamon colored bear. He lives up near the pass and the wind was really a problem for getting within archery range. At one point I was waiting in ambush and he came into 40 yards below me but the wind was blowing in two directions at times and he picked up my scent. All in all - every attempt at getting an archery shot on him but he smelled something (me) every time. The bear count was 7 bears yesterday. I think that wraps up my bear season. I guess I will not be getting one this year.

Axle, that bear would be a fine trophy on anyone's wall. I think I will hold fast to my method. Although I do shoot bears with guns too.

Way to stick to your guns err...Bow.   :chuckle:  I do not have that kind of control.   :chuckle: :chuckle:

Yep, I got a trigger on my bow and a trigger on my bang bang. Of course, I still have a little meat in the freezer too. Maybe you do too Ray  :chuckle:

Often my stomach tells me when to 'pull'. I have gone without deer or elk many years but not because I was not able to find animals. I raise critters too and when the freezer is full, I simply play with the wild ones. So much fun! I have harvested many wild critters but the feeling of passing one up is great. I have passed up hundreds of opportunities. Still feels good even today.

Ray if you go back and want someone along to try and call one in for you, let me know.  I don't think I am quite ready with my new Sapphire Hawk, but will be soon.  Maybe take a mule up there with us.  :)

Machias, you are welcome to join my camp any time. Not sure if I will go back out for bears up there this year. I have not tried calling the bear in and have been fixated on one particular bear. That one I passed on last week was in the same area too. He's a small one and this time he saw me first and shot out like a rocket through the brush. It was a funny sight.
