I dont think we have done the "if you could only have one gun" thing here yet have we? so lets here it if could only have one gun what would it be?
-
30-06 from varmit to elephant. BOOM........dead!
-
ya the 30-06 is the most versatile gun on the planet. I would wager to say that you could kill anything with it and i mean anything.
-
338 win mag for me. 185gr bullets all the way to 250gr bullets has been used on every dangerous game animal on the planet and still is not too much overkill for deer and goats. i think 30cal is marginal on dangerous game where they need to stop on the spot.
I could even go with one load too 225 grain Barnes triple shox.
-
7MM RM Browning BAR.....it has served me well since 1971............................Les
-
30-06. 8)
-
never owned one yet...but 30-06
as far as a gun for anything i would ever need...i would pick a 270 or 7mm both in the wsm variety :)
-
I would also say the 06, I have killed elk and deer and a fair number of yotes with it.
-
7mm Remington Mag in Browning A-bolt
-
I'd go with the 30-06 also if I could only afford/have one gun to hunt with. If it were a stuck in the woods scenario/survival, I'd go with a 12ga. but it all depends on location/situation.
-
7mm Mag
-
.270
-
.308
-
My two cents......
Any of the following in no particular order.... 30-06, 270, or 7mm Mag. Which one? Pick one.
I hunt with a 7mm Mag.
-
338 win mag hands down. used to be the day i would say 30-06. but with grizz or brown bear, the 30-06 is marginal for close up saftey. the 30-06 is not a fight stopper. its good when someone is backing you up.. the 338 is not too much for deer or sheep, what the doctor ordered for elk and moose, and made for big bear.. the handload 300 grain 338 win mag bullet will out penetrate in any test media the 300 grain 375hh bullet.. the 6 and a halfs, 7's and 33's penetrate like drill steels.
-
300 winny
-
300WM or 300WSM bolt action, stainless and laminated or synthetic and handload for the application.
Light bullets and light loads for varmints or paper, bruisers for elk or other heavy game.
-
Like others have said 30/06.
-
338-06 still an 06 i guess.
-
300 WM, oh ya, it is the only gun I hunt with :P
-
.22 LR. I can haul around 10x the amount of ammo, and it is capable of keeping me eating meat year round. This is what is in my "when the *censored* hits the fan" container.
-
06 no question.
-
not to beat a dead horse, but i'll roll with my a-bolt 30-06.
-
7mm rem mag
-
.30-06. So far, with this caliber I've shot mule and white-tailed deer, pronghorn, elk, moose, mountain goat, white-tailed jackrabbit, coyote, blue grouse, ruffed grouse, snowshoe hare, cottontail, feral cats, prairie dog, yellow-bellied marmot, and I'm sure some others that will come to me after I post.
-
What did you shoot your sheep with? ;)
-
If you don't reload the 30-06 is tough to beat.
I like the 300 Win myself.
30-06, .280, .270, 7 Mag & 300 Win are all good though.
-
I'd be thinking .457 Wild West Magnum. From WW Guns in Anchorage. It's what some say Marlin based/stole their .450 from. It shoots standard 45-70, .457 Mag, a stretched 45-70 and .410.
Ya the .410 doesn't get much respect as a shotgun round maybe. But the 45-70 / .457 will kill anything that walks. And a .410 will leave enough meat on a bird or rabbit to feed ya if needed.
Of course there are double barell survival rifles....
-
338 or 340 Wby, 160's to 300's, got all your bases covered.
-
338-06 still an 06 i guess.
I'll put in another 338-06
Slenk
-
I use a 7mm RM for practically everything, and have never had a problem with dropping animals or finding several choices in ammo. If I was hunting high country and long shots were needed it would be the 338 Lapua, but for every day, all around reliable shooting its the 7mm.
-
30-06, even though I've never owned one I shot. my wife and kids bought me one for a present 'cause they knew I wanted the action, I brought it in to be rebarreled without ever firing it.
-
see I am going to go with.45 colt ruger blackhawk 4 /58" barrel
-
Hmmmm.....
Only ONE rifle??? That would sure be a shame.... :'(
But If I had to stick with ONE, for everything....perhaps the .308. I can kill anything you guys with your '06 can kill :P (this should get 'it' going!), and find NATO ammo in almost every country.
But I'd hate to leave the 'Ol 300 mag behind. :chuckle:
A long term survival rifle? The .22 lr as said above. I can ALMOST kill anything you guys with the '06 can kill! :P (ok, maybe I'm stretching it, but so is this thread!!).
I can't imagine owning only one.

300 wm for me.
-

I shot my sheep with a 7mm Remington Magnum.
-
I dont know?? I only own a 300WM & a 30-40 Krag! so I'm thinking 300WM.

Mines for sale....LOL :hunt2:
RUGER M77 MKII.....30-06, stainless with featherweight stock with drop out floor plate (VERY NICE OPTION).
-
.300 win mag. I have killed many animals from a Kodiak Brown Bear to whitetail with it and many in between.
