Just found out my wifes granddad was drawn for the late muzzeloader for this unit....dec 1-8. he lives in sunnyside and is 73 years old. still in pretty good shape and hunting is pretty much his only passion. but he has never hunted this unit it was a second choice for him and so here we are. Been looking at the area maps and am going to order the units public land map checking out google earth and seeing what I can find out. it looks like this could be a sweet tag to have and if any one feels generous and could point us in the right direction I would appreciate it. seems like a fair amound of public land in the unit. he usually hunts near bickleton and there isnt alot of land to hunt but we always have a good time. hoping he could nail a big cascade blacktail unless there are any true mulies in the area.

North end of unit. King Mtn, Quigley Butte area if he can get behind gates. Good luck.

I second that!!

thanks guys... were hoping to get to scout a little before hand so that will be a area we will be looking into appreciate it

I agree also, just north of gleenwood holds some good are, alot of DNR land, Island camp, bird creek camp area, bunch of land in there. I have seen a few big bucks cross on the highway just past gleenwood.
-
Another area is along the flats just west of the old reload along the Glenwood Highway. That is wintering ground. So west of Summit Creek Road.
-
Isn't Glenwood inside the Res?

No
-
read the map. and don't kill deer near glenwood. :chuckle: :chuckle: the map say's it is in the res.
-
North of glenwood is. Not glenwood. I would hunt east of glenwood is where I would hunt. There is a lot of refuge south and several miles north you hit the res.
-
head to white salmon more deer in that area.
-
If you want the big bucks, you are going to have to walk in behind some gates and north of Glenwood is not the place to be. Up off of Fisher Hill toward Camp 7 IMHO. Early December, the Klickitat Canyon is going to be the best bet for deer. Of course this is all dependent on the snow lvl's. I live here and I hunt here. As far as Glenwood being on the Reservation, well that all depends on who you talk too lol. Good luck with the hunt. I know where there's a nice 5x5 hanging out. But its a long walk in.
Cheers

Like I said some where around the old reload would be good after migration.

I really do appreciate the help guys. looks like we got a few different areas to look at which is good. We will definatly be trying to find the biggest one we can for him. you never know it might be his last one. its been about 5 years since he got a deer and he isnt getting any younger. he can hike about 5 miles a day i think 2.5 miles in and 2.5 miles out. its kinda funny he probably works out more then i do this year trying to get in better shape for this hunt.
-
I did not mean to cause confusion, I was looking at the Washington gazette and it shows Glenwood right in the Reservation?
Between the PCT meandering around and the Reservation boundary I could pull my hair out trying to figure that area out, lol.
There is some great looking land down there.
-
Not a problem. It's not but it's not to far either. It is neat up there. If you guys have questions about the area feel free to send me a PM. I could probably spend a day looking out there with you if needed.
-
Like Deer Slayer, if you get to that late hunt and need help on where to go in or around Glenwood, feel free to PM me, I do all my hunting right here in and around Glenwood.
-
thanks we just might do that. your guys do muzzy or modern? I am a modern hunter so i never get to hunt late thought it would be pretty fun...pretty easy to find the deer
-
I am modern. I hunt 382 but have a job that allows me to drive around the county every day looking at bucks. I could probably drag you along at work for a day and show you a lot of areas.
-
"I could probably drag you along at work for a day and show you a lot of areas."
as long as i don't have to sit in the back and ware braclets. 8) :P
-
I hunt modern, muzzy and modern ( I have two boys that hunt 16 and 17). I am always in the woods with them and as long as I have a bear tag, I carry my rifle.

Is the soda spring area in the 578 unit too and is that a good spot for archery in nov?
-
so is the gated land is that gates on the public land? or is that private timber land that allows walk in hunting or what?

Both private timber land and some state DNR land are gated.
-
I hunt turkeys behind a timber land gate, but I have to drive up DNR land to get there..haha.
I have seen dandy bucks up in willis and dead canyon late in the year..well when the snow hits good.
I have the Late Archery Tag for up there, and Im gonna be on the wackakus ( I will never be able to spell it..) flats. More than likey in a ground blind, or a stand with loads of cold weather gear on.
Ive also seen deer up by quigly bute..and north of that..and some elk too. Good luck..
