Question for all you duck hunters out there. My buddy and I have two ladies that want to join us this year to see what this duck hunting that we are so addicted to is all about. One of the girls is my buddy's fiance and the other is another friend of ours. Our good hunting spots are rather tough to get to and require waders and in the case of one of our spots, a long walk as well. My question is a)do we take them early season when the hunting might not be great but they shouldn't get too cold or b) do we take them when the hunting should be better and risk them freezing their tails off and not enjoying themselves? Any other suggestions or experiences you guys have had similar to this?

Make them freeze their tails off and get a chance to shoot something, if need be offer to piss in their waders to warm them up :)

I refuse to duck hunt it is plain miserable sounding...my suggestion would be make sure they are warm and dry and not bored so good gear and good hunting

The tough part is that warm, dry gear is expensive gear and it would suck for them to buy all that stuff and have them not enjoy it. I have extra waders, jackets, gloves etc but I am 6'1" and the girl that would be going with me is like 5'0" even and wears like a size 5 in women's shoes. I had her put on my waders just for laughs and the chest of them came up and covered her face. :chuckle: What we are going to try is letting her wear my dad's waders, he is like 5 inches shorter then me and then have her wear multiple pairs of socks to try and help the boots fit. I am thinking we need to be prepared for a short hunt and not get upset if they want to leave before we are ready to go. :'(

Make it fun. There are lots of places where you can hunt with just one person with waders to retrieve ducks and place decoys. Shore blinds anywhere will work, rivers are great, small ponds etc. Bring a thermos of Hot chocolate and snacks. No death marches to some out of the way spot. I used to take my wife and grandaughter with just their claming boots.

if you are really concerned about them falling in love with the sport you could always get some cush guided trip where they take you out to the blind on a 4wheeler and serve coffee and everything...

I have introduced several ladies to hunting, couple of them still hunt. First and foremost you need to make sure they are comfortable and DRY. Birds mean less then comfort to the ladies especially on the first time out. Although opinions very on whether or not you should take your GF's hunting I can tell you that it is a great idea. Makes it a lot easier to spend money in the future...........

I agree. Even if the girls don't enjoy it and want to do it again, at least they will be able to understand better when we talk about what went on and hopefully have a greater respect for just how much of a challenge it really is.

they want us to know what is in their closets and jewelry box as much as we want them to know whats in that back corner of the garage.

Not really, you just have to smart about it, every time a bird flares you tell her it's cause you need a few more decoys, or better gear. Once Ma Tealer found out her gear was nicer then mine, she bought me better stuff. I can honestly say that having my fiancee in the field with me has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. It can be a little awkward for the other hunting party member but it fades fast.

Don't take them... Leave them home in the dark and let them wonder where you are and what you're doing. Pretty much the same thing guys have to put up with when they go out for "Girl's Night"!
I've never met a woman who didn't complain about something when taken duck hunting. At for me, that *censored* isn't worth ruining my hunt.

option 1 my prefered.. take them when its cold and good hunting.... there are ways to warm up in a duck blind.... ;) Option 2 almost as good as option 1 go on the guided hunt.... I mean its a guided hunt why the hell not? :dunno:

I used to take my wife in the field. She enjoyed it as long as she was warm and dry. You don't have to hit the coldest or the rainiest days. Lots of locations where she may not need chest waders. I have taken quite a few gals out duck hunting over the years. They all seem to have had good experiences.

I live in North Bend but we mostly hunt around the Columbia basin as well as the Tri-Cities. My buddy lives in Ellensburg too.

Not even close to the truth. I hunt ducks to kill ducks, not spend time with my wife. If you're taking her so that you have someone to play with when the ducks aren't flying then it sounds like you're doing a worse job of picking your duck spots then I am of picking my women

You might try explaining both options to your female friends and let them pick which one they want to go on? That way they have ownership in the outcome of the hunting conditions.

Duckaholic- I really appreciate that and might take up on it. The spots that we go aren't that far of a hike but you have to wade through the water for a while to get there.
