Couldn't quite get in front of him in time but didn't spook him either. I don't think I will see one bigger than him, hope I get another chance at him. Yesterday I saw about 40 young sheep and not one mature ram. I did cross paths with the biggest rattle snake I have ever seen in this state. Well, there is my update after 2 days.
-
Thanks for the update..go get that big one!
-
Do you have a tag? Which one?
-
I have the tieton any ram tag. I didn't have time to do much preseason scouting but I am real familiar with the area I am hunting though. Stinking steep country though, rough on my old knees.
-
keep at it you'll find him again.
-
good luck keep after him :IBCOOL:
-
Good Luck BOOM! Hope your able to put your tag on him.
-

-
Good luck, keep icing the knees every night you can and hitting the Ibuprophen at the end of a day.
-
Good luck and keep at him. It really sounds like you are in the right area. Can't wait to read the results of your hunt.
-
We all wish we were in your spot. Most of us will never get to be, so enjoy every second of it. AWESOME.
-
Yes, this sheep hunting is fun. Yesterday my son and I went out to where I had seen sheep on Wednesday and snuck around the rim and didn't see anything, a little disappointing because we were in the honey hole. Then we notice some elk moving through the trees so we start glassing and sure enough, a branch antlered bull. Now we are both thinking oh boy the curse of the special permit, you know the one, you never see the animal you have a permit for but you see dandies of everyother species. I think my son was a little deflated so he asked if we could sit down awhile. I said sure and I put my hand down on a flat rock to lower myself and 8 inches away a baby rattler started moving away, he was rolled up with his twin trying to stay warm, they were so young they only had one button. That's 4 rattlers now. So we go a little farther and spot a herd of sheep feeding about 300 yards in front of us, we sneak up to about 125 yards and glass them, no big ones. Latter we saw two groups on a slope that is unapproachable, too steep. Shoot one there and he rolls all the way to the bottom. I jokingly texted elkstuffer asking if it was too soon to start panicking and he responded "hell no" don't know what he meant by that. :chuckle: Anyway going up tomorrow after work.
-
keep at it! and good luck.
-

His Barrel's still clean, legs are cramping, hills are getting steeper. He lives the Hunters Creed tho: Ariseth Early, Returneth Late, Smelling of strong drink and the truth is not in him. HaHa

We couldn't find him infact we didn't see a ram all day. In hindsight I wish I had been more aggressive yesterday and gone after him, just wasn't feeling good about getting down in there by myself late in the day. I'm not to worried though, I've got a nice 125 ram picked out for the last day :'( I will be back up there tomorrow morning.
-
Still have lots more days he'll show up again. Just remember you get to look at him the rest of your life. Make sure you get one you really like.

-
interesting day had one in my sights at 100 yards that I spent a half a day stalking, not what I was looking for. Then I found my ram and he was with 4 other rams, 3 of 5 are shooters one is a monster. I set up a lane for a shot of about 350 yards and the 2 small ones walk through my cross hairs, then something startles them and they bust to the bottom of the canyon, DAMM, try er again tomorrow.
-
Man keep going!
-
Sounds like you're getting closer! Keep at it!

Suns coming up soon. I wonder if he is sitting there with coffee in hand anticipating, or he is already on the ridge wiating for the last star to disappear. A cold shiver down his spine as the morning breeze funnels down the valley. The sky is lighting up to the east. Today is the day.
-
That is a nice thought Bone, I can picture it too!

Let's not put too much pressure on the guy, these OIL tags have enough pressure of their own. He's got plenty of time still. I predict he'll get it done in the next 3 days. LOL.
-
:chuckle: i hope so to :chuckle: :chuckle: i am sure he appreciates the support and encouragement.
-
Some call it pressure. I think its us living through him vicariously. I see these rams all the time. To have that tag in my pocket would be pure heaven. I'm glad he is enjoying the hunt.
-
No doubt.....he still has lotsa time......one time only......gotta make it the good one......I know Ron was proud of the one he waited for and chose.......just perfect.......he still cant believe he got picked and actually has one to show and share with his buddies......Too Awesome!!!!

And today's report is? The anticipation is killing me..

He found himself right in the middle of a rattlesnake den as the sun went down and he realized he had forgotten to put new batteries in the headlamp........
-
Wifey spotted a huge ram today. She said it was just under full curl and had 3 ewes with him that he was pushing, but no camera...ooops.

OK, Thursdays hunt. We start the morning off heading back to the top of the canyon that held the 5 rams the day before. I sneak onto the first ledge right at first light and pick over the ledge :yike:. Oh man, 2 rams looking right at me about 40 yards away, how did they know I was there? I through the scope on them and they are small, a few seconds later they bust down the canyon. Now I am thinking maybe these are the 2 small ones from the day before and the 3 shooters are right behind them. Now my hearts beating. I look below me to the left and behind a tree right below me not more than 20 yards :yike:, 2 white butts, oh my gosh that's got to be them. I put my binoculars on them and make out a ewe and horn, ram. I freeze on them and wait but they know something is wrong. They start down the hill keeping behind the tree and manage to slip away without giving me a clear view, crap. So I decide to just sit and wait and see if they pop out into the view somewhere down the canyon. I wait about 20 minutes I think, maybe only 5, and they pop out about 100 yards down the canyon, 4 ewes and a ram. I am disappointed see that he is not one of the 3 shooters and decide not to take the shoot. My helper says “you should take that ram, he’s not that bad and it’s a easy pack out". I take another look and say oh what the hell he’s not what I want but I am never going to find what I want. I set up and gently let off a shoot BOOM!! and down the canyon they go. My helper yells “YOU GOT HIM” and I am feeling it too. We wind down to the rock he is laying behind which is way rougher than either of us realized and after we finally make it to the rock, no ram . No blood, nothing, I slide down the chute looking for any trace of a hit, nothing. What the hell, no way I missed that shoot. I’ve got to check my gun to see if it is still sighted in. Before the season I had sighted it in at 3 inches high at 100 yards which put me in the zone out to 300 yards. I decide to drive all the way down the mountain to the bottom of bear canyon where there is a nice safe little spot to sight in. 7 inches high at 100 yards, what the heck? This time I set it for 2 inches high at 100 and after a few shoots feel confident in my gun again.
OK time out, got to type some more and finish a chore or two
-
What made your partner think you got him?
-
He said since it just disappeared he was sure it was down. He was standing on the rock and he turned quickly to the far side of the rock. It seemed from were we were that we would see him if he went down the draw but when we got there we saw that there was a chute behind the rock that we couldn't see. I went down the chute looking for him and any sign of blood. we spent about 3 hours looking for any sign and found nothing. We were both pretty confident that he just spun off the rock and shoot down the canyon.
-
that sucks :bash: but think of it this way it wans't ment to be! you will get the one you want!! ;)
-
So have you killed a ram or not? Quit dragging this thing out. :chuckle:
-
You better double check why your gun lost zero, not just sight it in again. Check your scope ring screws, mounts, etc.
-
I'd be getting my backup rifle you are down to 2 days!
-
Ok so now its late, too late to drive back on top. We had seen a group of rams driving down oak creek and the rams were showing much interest in the ewes so I figured we should do some glassing from the highway. We stopped in a few pullouts and started glassing. About the 3rd stop we found a herd that had a nice ram following the ewes at about 500 yards. I said this is it. I decided to take off and try to side hill and have about 150 yard shot. As I got to the spot I had picked out I could see that they were moving faster and were now crossing over the hip into the next draw. I look at my phone for the time and it is now 4:30. OK I’ll come back tomorrow and try to find them again. Wait a minute, screw that, I have been to patient and not aggressive enough, I am going after them. I get lucky and find a nice game trail that takes me through the draw and to the next ridge pretty quickly. I look around and nothing, they must have crossed over the next ridge. Too late to stop now, I take off again and make my way into the next draw. Still no sheep! OK now its getting late I guess I have to turn back. I take one last look around and spot a ewe way up high on the rocks. I look at the time 5:30 hour and a half of good light. OK I have a half hour to try and find them, lets go. I start up the hill and after going only about 30 yards and there in front of me through the rocks about 70 yards I spot the herd. They are feeding up moving fast. This is it, I take out my shooting stick and set up in the rocks and start glassing. There he is, working up hes still too low for a shoot. He steps up a few more steps but sheep all around him. Then he steps to his right and gives me a perfect shoot, BOOM!! RAM DOWN
-

OK here is the rest of the story, better late than never. It’s getting close to 6 now, less than an hour of good light and I am in unfamiliar terrain. My helper had stayed down below at the truck to keep an eye on the sheep incase I lost track of them. It would take him at least an hour to get up here. There is no way I can get this ram caped out and make it down the hill before dark. I had talked to several people about this scenario before and had received what I thought was good advice. It was cooling down quickly and the wind was blowing hard so I made the decision to gut him out, prop the cavity open and come back for him at first light. I covered him up with brush and left human scent (a sweaty tee shirt works well) and came down the hill. I got a bit of panic attack and thought about returning up the hill with a pack out team but was talked out of it. I tossed and turned all night and got up to make coffee at 4 am. We started up the hill at first light and everything turned at great!
My son and me at daybreak
