Title: No big-game cal restrictions in Idaho?
Post by: BlackRidge on September 21, 2010, 09:21:48 AM
My pop's called me up yesterday to see if I wanted to join him on a work-trip to Idaho Nov1-5th, I got all excited at the opportunity to expand my general season and checked out the IFG rules... But I didnt see anything about minimum calibers, aside from the general mention of no rimfire for big-game.

Guess I'm just curious if WA is unique in the fact it has a minimum caliber that can be used?

I use to live in ID and you were allowed to use .223 or 17.rem or whatever else you wanted .

I'm taking my 22-250 on my next trip to Id for deer.
I killed a good buck in SE Alaska with a .223AI a few years ago.
I've never had a game warden check the cal. stamp on a barrel here but I still havent used a .224 on big game around here, I do think about it now and then but thats as far as it go's. When it comes down to it, even though I think it's stupid, the law is the law.

Last time I hunted Idaho I think the only restriction was that your gun could not weight more than 16 lbs.  I suppose thats to keep people from hunting with 50 BMG's, bazooka's, rpg's etc.  Montana has no caliber restrictions either.  Colorado's is very similar to Washington's with a .24 cal minimum.

Yea the only restriction in idaho is the 16lb max rifle weight and it must eb a centerfire. I saw a ton of people hunting deer with their AR's and M-14's. Colorado has the similar .24 cal minimum and a 100 grn bullet minimum. They also have a more extensive handgun write up in their regs. Good luck in idaho, I really miss that long sept. 1- december 1 hunting season for deer. may have to break down and buy the out of state tag next year.

I have seen Game warden's check the cal stamp on barrel's in WA.  Too big for coyote was the answer and here is your ticket.  Didn't happen to me, happened to my hunting partner last year.  He was in the wrong, and I understand why they have the law, but I don't necessarily agree with it.

Thanks! Yea, that super long season had me sold immediately, the fact I 'could' use an AR if I wanted just about made me pass out. Wish the non-res prices were a little cheaper though, but oh well

I'll probably go the 6.8spc/243/25/300wssm route next year here in WA, the AR-platform is just too d*mn versatile!  >:(
