Rules:
1) 5 members max per team - guest/kids can count towards your total as long as they aren't regular members of your team. *Here is what I had in mind for a "guest hunter" Sometimes you take a newbie out, sometimes a relative rolls into town and you take them out. If you kill an animal on these hunts then it can count toward your total as long as someone from the team was there. A guest hunter can't go out by themselves one time, kill ten coyotes, and have that total counted to someone's team. (For rule clarification: A guest hunter can only count toward your total for one hunt, and must be accompanied by a team member.)
2) No roadkill
3) Honor system applies
4) Photo of kill with at least one team member needs to be submitted for points to be awarded. (Or a card with team name)
5) You can add someone to your team after the 1st, but any coyotes they shoot prior to be putting on your team do not count.
6) No hand gestures needed for photos. This is a "fun" contest. No money or big prizes involved, so I would hope our members keep it on the up and up. Don't drag frozen coyotes around to different locations and take pictures. For the heaviest and smallest coyote, you will need to show a picture of the scale. For the most animals taken in a 12 hour period, you will need to take a group shot (both ears of the animal are acceptable in lieu of a pelt or in the round). For the most animals award, I will be counting all animals, regardless of type as 1 point (ie, 4 bobcats, 3 coyotes = 7). This is not the calculation for your point total, just that part of the contest that applies to animals.
Scoring:
1) West Side Coyote - 3
2) East side Coyote - 1
3) Bobcats - 4
4) Foxes - 2
5) Misc. called animals (ie: badgers, cougars, wolves - Idaho) will be awarded points by a random drawing of 10, 20, or 30 points that are selected out of a hat.
6) Multipliers: Muzzleloader - points x 1.5, Compound Bow - points x 3, Traditional Bow - points x 5, Out-of state animals - points x .5
7) Photo .5/per animal - capped at 10 per team

It can be a long, fun discussion, but there's only a couple possibilities when a Coug is hanging about for longer periods of time in one area... either a honey hole (I have a story of 18 months on 700 acres because it held enough deer to lose one per week), or denning (I have a story that's happening right now, of sightings, sign, kills etc. for many weeks, and the 2-3 month old cubs were spotted last weekend.) Very few other possibilities, although the booming population is creating some new behaviours...

im saving my ammo and yotes till the games begun.. but from nov 25th to dec 8th i think it is (for late archery) ill be goin deer and elk hunting but will take the rabbit call incase i hear them buggers yelpin n hollarin but im startin to get trigger happy.

I hope to get out on a morning or two but it will probably be January before I can start getting serious :bash: Those six and seven day work weeks and long hours during harvest really messed me up for timing to get my projects wrapped up this year. Plus I still have not had time to work on my reloading room, haven't had time to reload a single round all year, I think I'm going nuts :P
I haven't seen but only a couple of coyotes so far and haven't heard much howling in the evenings or mornings, maybe we just don't have many dogs around this year. Varmint Ventilator must have killed them off last season, haven't even seen him in months and he's my neighbor.
Haven't had a howler out in over 7 months, not sure if I can remember which end to blow into :o and the batteries in the E-Caller are probably dead. Not looking good for me so far :dunno:

Shane, what's the new stick you will be using this season? I recently finished up a Savage build in 22-250 with a 26" 8 twist barrel. I just need to find the time to work up some loads, I want to use the Hornady 75 grain V-Max bullets for a good solid 600 yard gun. It's a heavy booger though.
It's really not a coyote gun at all. It's a Remington 798 (Serbian Mauser) in 7mm with a custom #3 fluted ER Shaw barrel, some trigger work, and a B&C Medalist stock. I actually got it as is, with no rounds through it on Gunbroker for $600 back in June. I've only done some preliminary load development and I'm getting .70". Now it's time to mess with seating depth, I think I can get her down to .5".
I still haven't sent that WSSM back in to get fixed, just been busy as hell all summer. That 22-250 sounds awesome, I've been looking for a factory one with an 8" twist bbl. You know Berger makes an 80gr VLD in .224. Little more spendy, but I'll bet it'll get you out there.
We'll have to get together for a hunt once we have some time.

Soooo... If a team takes a pic of the live coyote right before the pic of the dead coyote does that team get 1.5 points???
That is the problem of having that rule. Also, someone can take a photo of a dog out in a field while driving along I-90 at 75 mph, the photo is so blurry one can hardly identify it as a four legged creature and yet they still get a half a point for it. I simply don't agree with it, a BS rule I think.
If you are good enough to call them... then, go call'em and kill'em. As in if you are going to talk the talk, then go walk the walk and earn that point.

I am leaving points for photos of coyotes, but at a member's suggestion, we will cap those points at 10 total for any one team. The reason behind this is I want to encourage people to actually learn how to call and understand coyote behavior and their response to how you conduct a stand. In order to do this you need to keep your finger off the trigger and observe coyotes and their responses to your calling. Working a coyote, getting them to respond to your calling, and then reaping the benefits fo putting them in your lap, is much more rewarding than just a kill. All of you veteran callers can agree to that. What is more impressive to a newcomer that you introduce to calling. Showing them a coyote at 300 yards and saying shoot it, or watching a coyote come up and sniff the end of a barrel because you manipulated them into doing so?
Yes the photo deal can be abused, that is why I am putting a cap on it. The original intent of scoring the photos as points is to encourage more participation. This entire contest is run on the honor system so hopefully, our participants don't abuse the rules. It has gone really well the past two years.

I agree on the cap at minimum. I would also like to see that all photos are at least reviewed or perhaps put up for discussion and if agreed on by say 3 out of 5 members then the .5 point could be awarded to that team. I realize everyone here may not be the killing type and should have that predator counted. I am certain most here would trust your judgement on what a good photo is. It is the obvious ones that I have issue with. Call'em and shoot'em, either with a camera or a firearm, simple as that.

We will try it out with me being a judge on photos. Let me know what camera you used as well, Since a P&S camera can make a coyote that is 50 yards away look like it is 500.

I suggested to TBradford that we should cap the photo to a max of 10 points. Last year I submitted many pics of live coyotes and could have taken many many more. In a way I felt bad that we were hanging right behind the two other successful killing teams, by merely taking photos. A maximum of 20 photos (10) points should still make it fun for the live picture taking part, but also make it more fair to the long term goal of this contest as I see it.....removing these predators in a friendly contest. Sorry this seemed to turn out be be a mess TBradford, and thanks again for all you do to make this a fun event for all. :twocents:
MtnMuley, no need to apologize or feel bad, as a matter of fact, I don't even recall even one of your photos, my bad :dunno:
I just hope this doesn't turn into a can of worms. Just trying to keep honesty and fairness a main part of the game with just a simple clarification before the games begin, the man running this show knows what is fair.

Lets not discourage compeditors from taking pictures while they are on stands, :dunno: it creates a whole new challenge to harvesting yotes to try & pull off both the pic & the kill. Plus every one here loves to visualize being right there with them when everything come's together into a successful hunt & a photo never hurts. :chuckle:

Rules:
1) 5 members max per team - guest/kids can count towards your total as long as they aren't regular members of your team. *Here is what I had in mind for a "guest hunter" Sometimes you take a newbie out, sometimes a relative rolls into town and you take them out. If you kill an animal on these hunts then it can count toward your total as long as someone from the team was there. A guest hunter can't go out by themselves one time, kill ten coyotes, and have that total counted to someone's team. (For rule clarification: A guest hunter can only count toward your total for one hunt, and must be accompanied by a team member.)
2) No roadkill
3) Honor system applies
4) Photo of kill with at least one team member needs to be submitted for points to be awarded. (Or a card with team name)
5) You can add someone to your team after the 1st, but any coyotes they shoot prior to be putting on your team do not count.
6) No hand gestures needed for photos. This is a "fun" contest. No money or big prizes involved, so I would hope our members keep it on the up and up. Don't drag frozen coyotes around to different locations and take pictures. For the heaviest and smallest coyote, you will need to show a picture of the scale. For the most animals taken in a 12 hour period, you will need to take a group shot (both ears of the animal are acceptable in lieu of a pelt or in the round). For the most animals award, I will be counting all animals, regardless of type as 1 point (ie, 4 bobcats, 3 coyotes = 7). This is not the calculation for your point total, just that part of the contest that applies to animals.

So FALfire are you saying if you were playing fantasy football (which, in reality, this is fantasy predator hunting) you would only take points if your quarterback scored a touchdown by passing because that's what a quarterback is SUPPOSED to to? This is just for fun. Some of the pics that have been submitted in the past are when guys are out photographing or at work or whatever. That is the way it has been the last 2 seasons and no one has complained. I don't have a problem with photos at all.
I agree. The .5 is nothing in the long run and why not let someone share their images and join in the fun? Many dogs are shot at 400 yards from the side of the road and they would be allowed so why not the photos?
It is all in good faith and fun with no prizes so I don't get the cap. :dunno:

I call in most of my coyotes, but if I'm moving between stands, and see one in range, he goes down. I would probably try to hide, and call him closer, I might not. I've certainly shot some on the drive in, and out. I guess the short version is that a coyote in range is a coyote in the scope, and down if possible. :twocents:

So where does it say this? All I see is a part that gives extra points for "out of state" kills. Not trying to get around the rules but I don't see that one and to be honest kinda would like the points for our team.

All joking aside, I'd like to remind everyone why many people hate coyote contests. This one is great because it is all in fun with no big reward on a honor system with people of honor. That being said, what Tlbradford says goes. Follow the rules (they are simple). If you don't want your mug in the pic, make a sign. If you don't have a sign, then drag the thing home and dispose of it later or lose the points.
Tlbradford puts a fair amount of free time to keep this moderated, lets try to keep it fun for him as well. :twocents:

Last year we had the discussion on out of state animals and whether or not they should count at all. The consensus was yes, especially so we could have wolves, badgers, etc. It is confined to the because that is where our members primarily hunt, and to keep the contest on equal footing. We could sign up guys from very coyote rich environments that would really make this thing lopsided. Some of us have connections with professionals that could actually win by themselves.
Keeping it in the Northwest has always been the intent of the contest. However, you are correct that this isn't specifically stated in the rules. I will allow the points, but will revise the rules to reflect this intention. You only get 1 point for the fox though since they are common in Texas. The .5 multiplier will apply.
Sound fair?

I got out today after a prebid meeting and made a few stands. First time with the CS-24. Ideal conditions. 70 degree weather...12:30 in the afternoon...and no lightweight camo, so I called in jeans and dress shirt. Called a two point muley right to the caller (caller in the sagebrush with the buck in the background in the 4th pic), and then 2 sets of does. Anyway, called in one that hung up at about 200 on the first stand. Due to a quick set-up so I could get some photos of a bedded doe, I was in the sun, upwind of the caller, and when I went to where I shot, my truck was also visible about a 1/2 mile behind me. Good Lord, I felt like a rookie. Then I proceeded to whiff on the shot.
Second stand, one shows up at the 3 minute mark at about 20 yards. I'm still in dress clothes, but the sitting in the shade of the sagebrush and playing the wind correctly. I mute it and still hear some howling. A group had opened up about a mile off. They didn't come join the party, and I only saw this whitetail buck that survived the modern rifle season. Pretty nice for a Palouse buck.
I called my brother in law to tell him about the hunt, and he proceeds to apologize profusely and tell me that he threw my scope on a rifle he had some work done on to check some loads. He forgot to tell me that it didn't get sighted back in. He felt really bad, but I was actually happy to know I didn't have anything screwed up with my equipment. That thing hasn't lost zero since they were paired up several years ago.

OK. phew. Enough with rule clarifications.
I got out today after a prebid meeting and made a few stands. First time with the CS-24. Ideal conditions. 70 degree weather...12:30 in the afternoon...and no lightweight camo, so I called in jeans and dress shirt. Called a two point muley right to the caller (caller in the sagebrush with the buck in the background in the 4th pic), and then 2 sets of does. Anyway, called in one that hung up at about 200 on the first stand. Due to a quick set-up so I could get some photos of a bedded doe, I was in the sun, upwind of the caller, and when I went to where I shot, my truck was also visible about a 1/2 mile behind me. Good Lord, I felt like a rookie. Then I proceeded to whiff on the shot.

x2 on that tlbradford. another note "tip" is watch the other animals and birds around. i can't tell you how many times, i have been tipped off by birds that a coyote was in the area.
Deer too! Lots of times I've been looking at a deer in the area, and it looks over its shoulder, or up the draw, and here comes Mr. Songdog. Deer obviously have great vision, I use it.

Also, I've taken pics of myself holding the scruff of a dog by the neck...it will work in a pinch. Granted, that mangy mutt probably wasn't worth touching....it is the front runner for the ugliest dog though :chuckle:

We have seen a few dogs out and I got shots off at two more but didn't connect. Watching them out there and throwing different sounds at them didn't seem to make much difference, they were way too busy eating mice. I missed one at 42 yards from the decoy :bash: but on another stand I didn't :chuckle:
Should have had two more dogs this weekend but my'aaaah ..... scope was off :rolleyes:

popped a coyote today! already in the freezer waiting to get skinned and sold lol ill get a picture up soon, i only have one problem i didnt have any sign next to it, its just in the back of my truck lol can you run my license plate to legitimize it? if it dont count oh well, only the start of many more to come,

As long as you post in this thread prior to shooting something, your points will count, for whatever team you get assigned. I don't want anyone sitting at home waiting to go hunting because I haven't put them on a team yet. I like to update the scores about once a week. I will try to get folks assigned a team a lot quicker in the future.

Well I went out yesterday with no luck. I did see 4 dogs but nothing I could shoot. I busted one while walking into my stand, no shot on him. The others were road dogs I did see one that was about 30 yards off the road he just sat and watched me as he ate his mouse. I would have killed him nut he was only 75 yards from a house I'm sure they would not mind but I didn't have permission so he got to live another day. The other two were the same story posted land and I didn't have permission so they walked as well. I tried a cell phone pic but it did not work. I have to work today but I'll be back at it. Asap.
You had a better day than me. I went out and sighted in my rifle around 10:00 am. It was six inches high at 80 yards 1/4" off on windage. So I zeroed it at 80 and shot at a 270 yard target and was 3 inches low. Anyway, I decided to make a stand before I had to head back to town. I put my brand new e-caller behind a low mound and than sat about 40 yards above and behind it. Started with some bird distress and ended with some howls at the 30 minute mark. I was surprised at how quiet it was directly behind the caller, but I just figured it was being muffled by the grass and mound. I left a distress sound on and walked up to the caller and it was quiet. Basically it wasn't picking up the signals from the remote. I guess line of site really means line of site. I was surprised it couldn't handle being behind a 3' mound. Oh well, learned something new and I enjoyed the sunny weather before getting back to work.

I have been up in Canada for a Couple weeks and just was dying to get out and call in some Alberta dogs. I took along my Kanati Tek PX-1 to fight the bloody wind that is up there. That dang wind only stopped to change directions! :bash: Made for some real tough hunting not knowing some of the ground and trying to play the wind which would change at will.
I decided to call the coulees behind the ranch. At the 5min mark I had this lucky guy lookin right down the barrell approx 300yds. He kept looking back as he sat and pondered the dying mouse being broadcast loud and clear. I kept calling and he decided to come for a little closer look through the coulee. I lost him in the tall grass then noticed the second coyote. I repositioned down wind to the call which he was going to get wind of me. Sure enough he popped out at 40yds and surprised me, got my smell and off he went trotting along. He stopped back at the original place I saw him and was still keyed in on the sound. I decided, if he was that keyed in on the call after getting wind of me he was going to give me another try. So I took off through the coulees winding my way around the little hills and jumped him at 50 feet and it was a race to get the Howa up and get a running shot on him. Bang!!! All I saw was Tail and head doing cartwheels! Dead Yote`. I ended up stalking him for over 700yds according to the rangefinder through mud, muck and nasty crap! He was not getting away!

I moved down the road a couple miles to some virgin pasture ground. Set up and used distress for 30 min, then got challenged by a couple dogs! Using distress and get challenged!? Bring it on yotes! I challenged them back as a younger pup over and over again and they couldn't resist it. They came in no time at all, and hung up about 350 or so. I hunkered down and touched off the 22-250 40gr, WACK, total connection through the right side lungs. Down he went. Nope he got right back up and took off just like nothing happened. >:( I pulled up again and WACK! Bullet #2 hits in the left shoulder as he is running! Down he goes! Hell ya I said. I looked up and guess who was up and running again. After a few very quick and colorful choice words I finally ended this nightmare. Moral of this story: Nosler 40gr lead free BT don't work worth a crap on coyotes. They had the splash effect before any good penetration! :twocents:

Whats up with the new caller, I thought you were a GameTraks kind of guy. Tell me about the Kanati Tek, I've read a little about them but how well is it working for you. I've read it is supposed to be one of the loudest callers available.
Good work on the local dogs and a big :tup: to both you and Shane.
I loaded up a bunch of the Nosler 40gr B-Tips the other day after getting 1" groups on my 300 yard target, thinking these would do well on dogs. However I think you are correct about the bullet splash, if you look closely at my last photo, you will see a large bloody patch on yesterdays dog. The 40 B-Tip broke it's front leg and splashed on the dogs chest allowing zero penetration. It took a second round to stop her. I was not impressed, so I'll be going back to my 60 grain or 75 grain bullets for the 250.
The reason I chose to use the 40's was we were hunting around cattle and I wanted no part of a ricochet round :bdid:

Yeah the fog was horrible this morning so I too decided to stay home and get some stuff done.

VV is not a very good shot and refuses to use his eye glasses when we hunt, kinda like huntin' with Ray Charles 8) :rolleyes: I convinced him to use my shotgun so maybe his hit ratio would improve. I'm sure glad he put 3 rounds in that blaster when we left the truck :chuckle: this dog came into just a couple feet of us, waaaay to close for a rifle shot.
What he didn't tell you is that there were 3 more dogs that were charging into the call just not as close as this one. During all of the commotion I didn't see one that stopped 80 yards in front of us after the first shotgun blast so I let him go because he wouldn't stop and I'm trying to not shoot at running dogs. Not sure whatever happened to the other two, the brush was so thick we lost sight of them real quick.

I'll tell you what that guy knows how to scare them. I have never seen so many dogs do flips and spins. He is very good at getting REAL close to them without hitting them. That in itself is mad skills. :chuckle: :chuckle:

The next day was not quite as eventful we only saw 4 dogs all day 3 of which we could not shoot. This one however, made the mistake of coming into a rabbit distress call and she met her end by a 55 grain NBT at 30 yards.
The drive home was eventful to say the least. We came home Monday night and it was a blizzard the entire way. Took almost 6 hours to make it back to Walla Walla.
With all of the snow on the ground today I decided to go out for a a few stands before taking my daughter sledding. My first stand was productive as this male came in after about 15 min. He held up at 30 yards I put him down. After that I moved to a new location and did a second stand with no success. My third stand was a blast I was about 10 min into my set when I saw a big male running towards me at about 500 yards. he came all the way into to 200 yards and I lip squeaked him the rest of the way finishing him off at a whopping 20 yards it was great. I turned on the pup distress and waited. for about 2 min and then stoop up, big mistake! there was a second dog on its way into me when I stood up he saw me and ran i could not get a shot as he made his way towards a farm house.
All in all it was a fun few days and we put 5 more dogs onto the board for TDF.

I noticed that I'm seeing more AR's in coyote/varmint hunting pictures. Is everybody happy with the results ie: performance, distance you can shoot, knock down power, what ammo works best etc ?I haven't shot to many with mine but the ones I have done in with rem 55 gr HP did just fine.

I was just wondering. I've a couple of 223's. I just sold my DPMS and bought a Remington 700 22-250 SPS. I just got a Rock River 223 and am waiting for my mounts for the scope. I've shot a few bobcats and coyotes with my DPMS and love it. I always like to hear what the guys/gals use in the AR's. I just use store bought reloaded cheap 55 grain FMJ and have no problems.

I checked zero on my Remington 700 223 on my backyard range and took off for a little more action. I was able to take 3 of these dogs off of one ranch and 2 from another a couple of miles away.
Add 5 more to Sagebrush Assassins

Well I'm not sure what's close to you. I hunt some pretty heavy hunted coyotes and it realy cones down to being at the right place to get them. I drove into an area today that not to many rigs could go and it paid off for me.
I should go over to the Okanogan. It's only 1 hour from the house. We don't have much snow up here like the rest of you seem to have gotten.

Walking uphill against a head wind of about 10-12 mph in 10 inches of snow to my first set I was busted by a dog out munching on a tasty morsel :yike: :bash:
Saw a total of 4 dogs way to far off to shoot at and finally decided I was ready to head back to the ranch to get a bite of lunch and take a nap. I am still beat and sore from dragging out all those dogs from yesterday, I'm gettin' way to old for this crap :chuckle:

I know a gal down there that raises cattle. She butts up onto the Swanson Lake Wildlife Area. We went down there when they had the freezing rain and no power 2 years ago. We couldn't do squat, couldn't get around. Took a pot shot a 1 and missed.

It warmed up to a balmy 8 deg so went out by myself since BullElk and SBS had to work. Met a fellow Hunt WA member "Traildiggger" and have to thank him for busting thru the drifts for me even though he couldn't make it thru the last one. :chuckle:
Called in male first set, watched him come in from about 600 yrds, He would come in about 150 yrds at a time and sit down and take a break and then come in some more. After coaxing him in to 253 yrds that was was close enough.
The double came in on a string about 30 yrds apart, I tried to stop them at 70 yrds but they just kept coming. Shot the back one then the front one. was over in about 3 seconds. Gotta love them ARs.
Big10, it was nice meeting you the other day. We had a little luck up there. We called in 1 coyote to about 800 yards, but couldn't get it to come in any closer. Then, we jumped another one on our way to another set up. Almost stopped just before that to call again, but thought we may be a little too close to our last set. (Guess not). No luck on that one either. We did end up getting one later on in the day though. Just a little one, but it has good fur. There is a TON of sign out there, tracks everywhere. Hope to get out again soon.....Good job on the 3 you got that day.

Lets just say it is always the "best plan" when it is 6 degrees out side to leave dogs in the back of the truck for any longer than about 4 hours before they may need some motivation IE:( A 8' Long 4''x4'' & a shovel) to get them out of the back of the truck....

I have this really good CRP ground as you can tell. I don't think I could have got all three of these if it wasn't for the volume of the Kanati Tek caller. Very seldom do I shoot a tripple on the same stand.

Just down the road seen a good place for a call. A little mouse distress on the hand call produced this one. I took the 22-250 out on this set and as I walked up to her, her eyes followed me as I wet to pick her up! :bdid: She was pissed! As seen in the photo. She was put to rest. I am just not happy with the load/bullet combo I am shooting. Not to spark the .223 VS 22-250 debate but back to the AR's!

Hunting was rough today. 10 plus inches of crust with a breakthrough at every step. Had to go back to the truck and get my snow shoes, I'm absolutely wrecked. This SOB charged in at full bore after some challenge howls with ki yi's, he was looking to fight. Sorry for the graphic pic he was close and I was busted hit about 5" back and opened him up. Oops. 130+ dead coyotes so far. Contest goal is going to be 300 total.
I have a couple of calls collecting dust and some used predator calling videos I'm going to put up for prizes. Been meaning to do a little more with this contest, but work and family is keeping me from really pushing this to the next level. After I got back on the road I came flying (80 mph) around a corner through the pass and there was this deer carcass right in the middle of the road!! :yike: I slowed and swerved then I seen 4, yes 4 frickin Wolves!!!! Right there on the little off ramp of the highway exit. One blond, two greyish, and one black all looking right at my headlights.
I didn't even have a camera with me but my cell phone and the flash would not have been bright enough.
I did however do this :hello: and slowly took to the road home. I struggled with my decision for many miles on the way home! With a perm-grin on my face I think I did what was right at the time.
I wanted to get out and :mgun: every damn one of them! Their shoulders were the height of the hood on my corolla and that is all of 36in.
I pray they open the season there soon!!! Game On!

One of those days I should have stayed home.
I went out on Saturday and got a couple of sets in before the snow started flying, decided to keep at it but it was snowing so hard I looked like a snowman while on a set. Zilch for Saturday. Sunday it rained all day so I stayed home. Today looked like a great day to call in some dogs so I headed out. Got out in a good area and was driving down a road that had only one set of tire tracks in it and about 15 inches of snow and noticed a coyote running the road ahead of me about 100 yrds so I gave it the gas and followed that coyote for a good 300 yards before it dived off the road. I stopped and the coyote just sat there about 20 yrds off the road looking at me like "go ahead and shoot me I'm too tired to run". Finally it started moving again so I sat and watched it for a good 3 minutes as it had to leap thru the snow for about 30 yrds and then stop then do it again. Just before it headed over a hill it turned broadside and looked back at me for a good minute. I think that dog was plumb tuckered out. :chuckle: Probaly catch some grief from BullElk for not shooting it but what the heck. On my 3rd set I noticed a pair diving off the top of a ridge that had 2 or 3 inches of snow that was over 500 yrds away, as soon as they hit the side of the hill where the snow was deep and wet they had to start jumping thru the snow and the pair came another 80 yrds or so and stopped and wouldn't come any further. I couldn't get them any closer so waited for them to go back over the ridge then did another 4 sets with no takers. They would respond to vocals but not come in. Finally gave up and headed back home. On the highway I hit something and blew a tire. Guess I should have stayed home and went Christmas shopping.

Took the wife out yesterday or our first coyote hunt together. She did great we walked a few miles made a bunch of stands, but never saw a dog. It was fun she got a foot cramp so i had to give her a "Field Foot Massage" after we got her toes to pop we where back at it. Had a great time saw some pretty country and it was a great bonding experience for us. Wifey is a great shot and i wish i could have put a dog in front of her. We plan to get back out when the temp drops. It's been hard hunting the past two weeks.
LOL THAT SFUNNY :chuckle: THAT SOUNDS ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I TOOK MY WIFE OUT HUNTING,.. LOL

Finally connected on a couple.
The first one managed to take the hit and went about 15 yrds, took a jump off a rock and ended up in the sagebrush. So got a "as she lays" pic.
The next one I saw at about 6 min into the set about 360 yrds out peering over a ridge looking at the caller. Really wasn't too interested, he would come about 15 yrds or so and hold up. Finally at the 19 min mark he decided he didn't want what I was offering and turned to head back. Gave a big lip squeak and he turned broadside long enough for a shot. It was a nice dark male about 30 lbs.

Everything was going Swag's way and he was ahead 2 dogs to my 0 when we had a nice double and he missed the male. I got lucky batting cleanup and got on the board. We picked up a few "opportunity" dogs and all said and done, (I just can't seem to post without picking on my buddy), but team Yote Gami picked up 6.
BTW, dogs are starting to pair up.

Not only are they paring up but looked like the female was going in heat. Might be a early breeder? Or it could have been just the shock of the bullet. :chuckle:

Christmas for me is being spreed out over yesterday & tomorrow due work schedules. So I was able to go out & hunt all day today....
Made 11 stands & never saw a dog, I must be doing something wrong! :dunno: But never the less, it was a wounder way to enjoy the outdoors......

Took a non-member out today "HamBone" to bloody his .20 TAC. 1st set a single comes in with the wind at his back, I shoot and put it down and keep calling. About 1 minute later a pair comes in downwind. My partner sees the lower dog but not the upper. I'm saying shoot,shoot as the upper dog takes off full tilt. I pull the trigger before it gets to the ridge and miss. He shoots the lower dog DRT. I suck.
Got one more set in before the wind starts blowing tumbleweeds nothing comes in. Call next set and as every tumbleweed goes by we're thinking it's a coyote, at the 15 min mark we pull up and move, started walking about 250 yds and jumped a single that was coming in. :DOH: Went to the next set and called for 15 min again, got up and walked about 150 yds and jumped a pair that was coming in. One of those now is in the doggy hospital. Think I would have learned the first time. :bash:

Well Gary, I've been more of a lurker lately. Mostly just check in to see who's killing what. I would post more myself if I could actually kill some yotes. Christmas was good, I got a new GPS so I can tell if I'm on private or public when I go back to WY.

Should have had 2 yotes yesterday, but I took a rookie out with me. Made a great set, 1 min into the call, here comes a yote 250 yds and closing fast. It stopped at 110 yds and posed for a good shot. Rookie fired, yote exited in a flash without a mark. :'( ROOKIES :chuckle:

DavisonTP and I went out this morning to give our main honey hole a try. We went blank on our first two setups. It was shortly after 0715hrs and only 9 degrees according to my truck thermometer. Once the sun came up better and it started warming up, we started seeing the coyotes. We jumped one monster coyote out of a draw while driving to our next stand. It was in the trees before we could get a shot. We ended up jumping two more huge coyotes within a couple minutes of eachother while driving to the next stand. They both got passes as they headed for cover quicker than we could stop, get out, and shoot.
On our 3rd stand we called off and on for about 15 minutes and were just about to call it quits when I noticed something out of the ordinary. My scope was on 4.5 power so I cranked it up to 14 and spotted coyote ears sticking up out of a brush pile. Davison didn't see it and he started calling again. Once he started calling the coyote jumped up onto a knoll quartered away from me. It looked like he was going to bolt, so I steaded the crosshairs on him and squeezed the trigger. I looked up to see it slowly heading for cover, I thought I had missed it. I rack another round and Davison and I both let a shot ring out, almost at the same exact time, coyote number 1 down! It turned out that I hit it a little high and missed the vitals, it was messed up but still tried to get to cover. Tough guy, gotta give him that. Davison ended up center-punching it while it was moving. Davison's range finder was on the fritz, so we paced the shot out and it was around 430 yards.
Coyote number 2 came on our 4th stand of the day. Immediately after Davison did his first series of calls, I heard something moving about in the trees. I motioned to him to watch the clearing and not even 10 seconds later a coyote comes trotting out about 100 yards away. I barked and stopped it, Davison hesitated thinking I was going to take the shot, but then he realized I had brought only my shotgun on that stand. The coyote started to move again so I barked again and got it to stop long enough for Davison's AR to seal the deal. Total time on that stand was maybe 30 seconds from the intial call series to the shot.
Stand number 5 brought in a double, but they winded us and ditched into the trees before Davison could get a shot off. I didn't even get to see those ones.
Stand number 6 drew a blank and we called it a day. All in all we called in 4, shot 2, and saw 7 total. Not a bad way to start the new year.

The coyote BullElk shot was coming in fast, couldn't stop it so he took the shot head on. Had to use the cell for the pic as our cameras were frozen. It was a real nice sized coyote so I took a pic of it on the scale but didn't turn out. The last set had a pair coming in real cautious, couldn't take them both down as the male was circling downwind and the female was hanging back too far and took off like a rocket after the shot. Didn't say we didn't try though :chuckle:

Unfortunately I had a bathroom shower I have been putting off too damn long and got with it today for a bit, until VarmintVentilator called and asked if I was a wuss and had to stay home. So I asked the boss if it would be okay if I could go and watch VV kill sumptin'. :tung: We came home empty handed :dunno: Heard lots of dogs howling but had no takers so at dusk we packed it in and headed home.

Spent more time than my wife would of liked searching for yotes, dogs haven't seemed real eager to come to the call.

This was one of a pair, the male was a sly old dog he knew just what to do when getting shot at in an alpha field. He managed to find the deepest wheel rut & ran like the wind...

The way you guys shoot there is no need for camo anything. Hell, you both could be wearing flashing neon lights on your sets and no dog is going to get close enough to you to see ya before one of you kill it.

So after doing honey do's I decided to go out to a potential good area and try something new with the unproven new AR and the unproven new ND-3 laser genetics light! Well lets just say I was able to get TWO dogs in less than one hour!! [/img] :mgun:
So I walk up with the all new items in hand and for the life of me I have no idea why I didn't mount the light back on the scope before going? Any ways as I walk up to the honey hole I see two yotes trot off to my left rather slow!!! I shine the ND-3 and guess what the first dog basically stops and give me time to align my hand with light to scope (which seemed to take forever) then bam! Dropped him ahhhh then he runs out into what appears to be a potential lagoon (cow shat) and dies! Cool until I break through walking out to get him for a photo shoot! Not cool!!! Man my boot and left leg/clothes stinks baddddd! After draggin the dog off and to safe ground I realize I forgot my team sign so cell/crappy pic it is! Throw hi in the back of the wifes vehicle with head in wal-mart sack to prevent blood mess and off I go! 200 yards later I run into another I run into another in the head lights this time and he seems to want to die! So I abliged him! Two in one night and all within less than one hour from start to finish! All new items are now proven good additions!!!! They are finally starting to move hard in the Basin... The ground has been frozen long enough for them to start coming to the call & move out side their comfort Zone.... :whoo:
Gringo & I made a "Quick trip" last night, & lets just say it was memorable... :chuckle: This old, Very old dog put up a fight to the very end.(Look at his K9's). When he came in, Gringo "The Shootest" tried to end it early. Well lets just say that Gringo rolled the yote once (After 6 Rounds) but got back up & ran into a swampy mess. We walked the edge hearing the yote fight his way through some matted over cat tails. He would poop out long enough to get a couple of off hand shots, & run back in. Finally after desperately trying to squeeze a shot through that mess, he charged out up the other hill side dogging bullets. He would have made it but for some reason he turned & ran right back at us, into the swamp. Farely certain that I had hit him as he was just entering the cat tails, We both took an ammo inventory. Hmm? I am not saying that I was shotting any better, But Gringo had 1 & I had 5. We could not hear any movement in the swamp, so Gringo & his one round decided he was going in. After he had crossed the swamp (In Flip flops) :yike: he managed to stay dry, He found the dog sneaking away at 8 yards & Fired his last round. Than came the work, Gringo needed some help.. :bdid: In i went.. this stuff was thick, I am 6'6'' tall & most of this stuff was 4 feet over my head.. After digging through matted over mess we finally found him...
The highlight of the hunt was Gringo (Trail Blazer) being kind enough to show me the right way out. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: After almost loosing his flip flop in the mud & sinking almost to his waist I new I was going in a different direction......

That is my Dad's Ruger 77 22-250 that he picked up a number of years ago. So I decided to take it along on this hunt to kill a dog or two for him. I think I need to recheck zero on it cause it's shooting a little low and right, blew the innards out of both of these dogs and took quite a azz chewin' from VV about it too. :'( :chuckle:

Well, actually after I did a bunch of work to it, it finally began to shoot pretty well. I floated the barrel, bedded the action, put a better trigger in it, took some time to hand load some 55 Ballistic Tips for it and ran about 200 rounds through it, after all that it began to shoot. Now I just need to find my load data I had so I can get back to where it was when it shot 1/2 groups. But I agree, most rugers are crap for accuracy.

Made it out by myself today, first call had one come to within 60 yds not able to get a shot. Shot the first one while walking in for the second call, should've had the pair but missed the male at 300 yds. >:( Shot the other two males on the last two calls of the day, one 190 yds the other at 200 yds. I had to do the Spokane Costco, Home Depot and Lowes run today to get more stuff for the projects around here. Hopefully I'll get a chance to go out for a morning stand before I need to get back home and get busy here. Dogs were sure singin' around here tonight, should have got out the night vision but worked on finishing up the new DPMS LR308. Maybe tomorrow I'll let the air out of one with it, those 110 gr V-Max bullets do a real number on dogs.

Wow what a day. Started off with a double. Went and drug the two back to my set and saw two more way off in the distance. I called to them and they came FAST!!!! In fact the one hit the drag trail and even sped up. I geuss it smelled the blood and hit overdrive. Whatever it did it was awesome, I've never seen that before. Anyways that SOB just kept following the trail right to me at full speed and wouldn't slow down. It finally got my scent and veered off but still wouldn't slow down. I gave two running tries but missed. Then it's mate showed up while I was farting around and busted me immediately. So, on the first set i called in 4 and got two.
Moved to a different location for a quick set and just as I was setting up a pair showed up right in front of me. The far dog saw me but the close one never did. Made a 150 yard shot on it and dumped it. The mate went out to about 800 yards and warning barked me for about 30-40 minutes. I tried my hardest to get it in but to no avail.
Did one more dry set and it was time to go. It was colder hell and windy so I was ready to hang it up. All in all it was great day. Sure wish that one would have just slowed down for a second for me. :bash:

good work gutpile. smokin them! i cant seem to get back in the groove right now. something always goes wrong when i go out. sunday went out, first stand 2 dogs came bombing in. first one stopped at 25 yards i shot and shot 1 ft to the right. immediatly went to ki yi'ing and the other one came into 50 and stoped and shot a 1ft and a half to the right. i couldnt believe it! i went home re-boresighted my it was showing 2 ft right at 100 yards... sighted it back in yesterday.
I hate that. I had that happen once when I bought a bargain POS scope. :bash:

Well a four week quest comes to a end. I have educated a few coyotes trying to get one with the flintlock. Finally this a.m I called in two and was able to stop this one with a bark at 50 yards. .50 Cal Lyman flintlock. I've shot one with a .50 cal and one with a .54 cal patched round ball this year and they both leave huge entry and exit wounds.now thats awesome,I dumped a bob at the end of my feet with a 50cal,can you say wash rag LOL

Second set:
Saw this coyote huntin in a prarie dog town as we rolled on down the road. Decided to go after this one! Just had a feeling on this one. Got out and Camera guy and I decided to get closer. I could not see the dog at the time. Crunchy snow and below zero temps made this very hard. I made up my mind where we needed to be and just as that thought passed a train went by. We used the train noise to conceal our sprint to the next fence post across the field. 400yds later I see the coyote. I got set down and started to call. I could't tell if the coyote was coming or not for the longest time. I just kept on calling off and on. Finally the coyote had turned its head and I was able to see that yes indeed coming my way. My camera man could not even pick the coyote up in the screen because the LCD was SLOW due to the fricken cold weather.
I could not have pulled this Coyote any straighter if I had a rope tied to it. Came in to 100, and lip squeeked the last 20yds. Bang, bang! Yes two shots! Missed the first shot but barely. Shot her in the neck! Dead yote!
Upon retrieving the dog I got out my range finder to see how far it was to the willows where she started to come to the call. 996yds! I tried it four times with the same result! 996yds! You might not believe it but the HD video is proof. Due out sometime this year.

Went out with some friends this morning that wanted to see how a coyote is called. This little guy refused to come in. Boy I sure showed them how it's done. That dog just sat there and listened for 15 - 20 mintues. Finally he walked down the ridge and my buddy said just shoot him. So I put the stadia line on him, gave him a whistle and centered punched him at 440 yds. Two lucky shots in two days, I should bye a lottery ticket.

We went out for a while today, couldn't call in a coyote in 9 sets or get any to respond to vocals. Was about 3/4 mile from the pick-up and headed for the barn with our tails tucked between our legs when I saw a pair up on the hill headed for the top. We were down to the wire and I decided to give it a try. Put the crosshairs on one and followed it thru the scope until it stopped, put the 2nd stadia line on it and added a little bit more and touched it off. Lasered at 487 yrds. Best pelt I've seen all year so skinned it out for Janie's fur coat she wants. Came dang close to getting skunked. I really hate full moons and warm temps this time of year.
Nice shooting VV. Was wondering if you were going out today.

I took a guest out yesterday, Ol Dan, he wanted to get the skunk off his new savage 243 Win. On the third call of the day, this male yote tried to seek out, didn't make it, I ranged it and Ol Dan dropped him like a sack of spuds, 457 yds right in the head. :IBCOOL: The rest of the day was a bust.

Have been doing allot of hunting but nothing was responding to any thing, distress or the howl.. :dunno: Been seeing lots of dogs but they would hang up at 600 + yards away... so last weekend 204chuck & I gave it another try in a area we were sure there were dogs in, this time I decided it was time to bring out my 10. Figured some of those 600 800 yard shots would be a touch more reasonable with 168gr of A-max. Ironically after being on the stand for about 2 min doing a little lucky bird this pair came screaming in, I took the male at about 50 yards & the female made the misstake of stopping to a bark at 87 yards.

On sunday I couldn't stand the Idea of sitting around on such a beautiful afternoon watching TV, so I deiced to go out for a short hunt... Managed to connect on two more, both male..... :dunno: the second dog actually came in to the crys from the first, took me a couple of min to get into a position where I could get a shot in to finish the first off. This was the most tastefull way I could post this pic first dog the (one on the left) caught 55gr of v-max in the jaw which exited out his eye..... Not pretty....

322 Yards on this little female with the Savage 22-250. VV and I watched her play around for about 20 minutes or so, decided to not let this one get too much farther out. Yesterday we saw 9 dogs, all to far to shoot at, made up for that today. She was the only one we saw in about 3 hours before we headed back home to get some honey-do's done.
Pretty quiet today.

I have a friend that is on a commission with the WDFW. It had been mentioned once to put a bounty on coyotes and other predators to encourage more being harvested. We all know what predators can do to the fawn and calf survival rates. I have read some articles in various hunting magazines how fawn survival rates can increase up to 60-80 percent by just keeping coyote numbers down. Hunters and coyotes go back and forth as to which group takes the most game. The big advantage to having coyotes trimmed way back and hunters taking the largest share is that the hunters can control the age and or sex that is harvested making for a healthier herd. The budget is too tight for the fish and game to pay a bounty but this could be used to revenue money. What if you take a predator in, pay $10 or whatever and recieve an extra point towards your total for special permit hunts. Different points could be awarded for each type of predator checked in. This would not make it a rich mans sport since you can't just buy extra points, you have to produce a predator along with it. Last year I took 8 coyotes from my door step! Could most afford $80 dollars for 8 more points for a moose hunt? Sure. Would I like to have 8 more points? Could the WDFW use the funds? Let me know what you think?
There wouldn't be a coyote left if they implemented that! :chuckle: I like it. The guys on the east side would have 354 points and us poor wetsiders would have 3.

Monkey off the back. After losing the last two after what I thought they were good hits I piled one up, and christened a new .243. Hornady superformance 58 gr Vmax opened up a 4 inch hole though. Have you guys that shoot 243's found a good bullet that doesn't destroy the hides? I reload so any brand or weight I can try. Anyway, score one for team Annette. The ballistic tipped Vmax bullets are definitely not the best hide savers out there. I use them also for yotes and such but I'm not concerned with hide condition. Sierra and Speer make some good bullets for the .243 that are more likely to cause less exit damage.

Saw a coyote up on the hill so I decided to see if I could sneak it. When I got up there, I saw two. I wanted the male but his tail was facing directly at me and the female was broadside. I have an unwritten rule to always take the easy shot. I shoot and down goes the female instantly. I slap another round in, pull down on the male, and I couldn't squeeze the trigger. He dragged her 20 yards before they were separated, and all I could think was, man that had to hurt. Yes, they were having an intimate moment. The female died at 87 yards, and the male, well, what can I say.

SBS and I went north again today and it was freaking cold. We were hoping with the cold temps the coyotes would be out looking for a meal. Well not so much. The first set at about the 4 min mark we see a coyote come limping in, it kinda gimped it's way in towards the call then started angling parallel and then stopped, we both fired at the same time. Went over to it and she looked like she had gotten in a fight with another coyote, both front legs were chewed up, the rt leg had the hide split open and gangrenous. The next set we just sat down and a coyote took off out of a brushy thicket below us. He made it a little ways before he went down. The next 9 sets were a bust, the coyotes were there but we couldn't get them to respond to anything we were thowing at them. With the tracks we were seeing it looked like the ones that were paired up were going way back in the sagebrush and the singles were the only game in town. Total of 9 coyotes seen, approx 6 miles of boot leather in 8 inches of snow, Oh and 1 porkypine down. Hmm Now for the Hot tub and a Jack Daniels or two or three or four.

Had a tough weekend, missed a couple of really easy shots just jumped the gun on distances :dunno: Happens I guess. The wind and cold has really played havoc with these dogs, even driving some of the back roads looking for coyotes was a total bust. They must know VV and his trusty 22-250 is on the prowl :chuckle:
But tonight we struck pay dirt when this fine male came into 148 yards and that is where he screwed up cause I had just confirmed my 200 yard zero on my 6x45. The 58gr V-Max found it's mark just as we were about to loose our light.
Thanks VV for allowing me to put this one on the ground tonight.
Maybe tomorrow we'll find one or two more, we know where they are, we just got to get to them.

Calling just plain sucked today, They would only come in as far as where they could see the area where we were calling from and sit down and bark. Don't know if they were vocalizing their territory boundaries or what. One must have come from over 1/4 mile and stopped at a old dirt road and wouldn't come any further but started barking and then finally went back. Had another do the same thing but didn't bark just watched. We tried circling 1/2 mile above and calling but no dice. SBS saved the day by getting one that we busted and a drive by.

You are sooooo right about the responses this weekend, we threw everything we had at them saving pup yips for last and it was slow, real slow. Late this afternoon the 30 mph winds calmed down to around 12-15 mph and the one and only coyote of the day came in to the dinner bell. It was late and darn near dark when he finally showed up and that ended the day. 12 full hours of busting through snow drifts up high so we decided to head down to the lower ground near the creek to try our luck, it worked.
Good job you two, hopefully we can get together for a hunt or two this year, it would be great to meet you all in person.

After finally catching up on a few sunday, before the wind really started to rip. I thought I would give Gringo a Call & see if he had time to go out for an hour or 2. Well we didn't get allot of call time as the wind kept on increasing, but "gringo" (definitely a little rusty)got Lot's & mean LOT'S of trigger time in... to the tune of at least 30 rounds :yike: on only 4 dogs.. :DOH:...... It was a great time, to end a great derby.... Look forward to it again next year... SBA's as always stiff compeditors, good showing. Looking for redemption next year! :chuckle:

Gringo, Isn't it kinda funny when you give your hunting partner a bad time about missing dogs it turns around and bites you in the rear sooner or later. :chuckle: I know Falfire has a couple of Dillon progressive reloaders if your burning up a clip for every dog. I'm a little more ecomony minded as I just try to double tap them before they hit the ground.
Wasn't going out today so slept in till 6:45 had a cup of coffee with my wife and saw her off to work. Then I noticed Good Morning America was on TV, that is the one show I really despise so flipped the TV off and got on my hunting duds. Made it out to a spot about 10 am and started calling, this little male came in on the 6 min mark and stopped at 200 yrds and sat down and watched the area where the caller was. I tried to work him in closer but about 2 minutes of that he decided he didn't want any so headed back the way he came in, as soon as he hit a rise I gave him the ole squeak and he turned broadside and I got two shots, 2 inches apart into him before he hit the ground. Said good enough and came home.

I'm just wondering what happened to Gutpile, he was flat whack'en them for a while. All the teams combined killed a pile of dogs this year. That is the best part of this whole thing, seeing all those dogs go down. Until next time, get those empties reloaded.

The sad part is what Falfire said, anymore the expense of the gas/diesel and other related items for any type of hunting is preventing a lot of people from going out and enjoying a weekend in the outdoors.
I really enjoyed this years contest and appreciate TLBradfords work to keep it going.
Gringo, Since calving has started you know dang well that if it would have run thru March you would have kicked butt. You and Swag need to give each other a hug and then see how long it takes to start bickering again. :chuckle:

Falfire, I understand that with age we tend to have less mobility, but I would hate to think that you are looking for a way out of a challenge. :chuckle: Judging from your posts on this site I would never assume that you are the type of individual who would considered doing such a thing. :dunno: With that said, I hope with some rest, aroma therapy, an off road package on a JAZY Power chair :4w:, or maybe even taking advantage of some of those opportunity dogs :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
you would bring the same challenge next year. After seeing all of the SBA's whacking & staking this season I will agree with Gringo's goal of second place for you all next year!
With all of the smack talking aside, this competition wouldn't be near as fun with out real compeditors like your self's. Falfire I wish you a speedy recovery..

Yep, it bit me later, but while I burned a clip of 10, I've outshot SWAG on days when I forgot my clip and was single feeding my AR. The problem is that all the crap I give the man, is that I think he is finally starting to learn how to dish it back out.......slow learner :chuckle:

No way am I looking for a way out next year, just reality is all. I am certainly hoping that I can do it and if I do I will be out in force. This seasons contest was tough for me as my mom is not doing well and I started a new job running a machine/fabrication shop which has taken a toll on my attention to dogs. Trust me, if I can do it I'll be in the chase no doubt :IBCOOL: I will also be working on my shooting, I missed several chip shots this season so I think next year I will be sticking to one gun just not sure yet which one that will be :dunno:

Awsome to all hunter and ur time with those hard time with economy. With out u all it would be worst. But manys thanks to save fawns and few deer. I only shot 8 coyotes this winter. I could have got few dogs down but didn't bring rifle with me. Next time rifle is going with me full time.
