Just lookin at gettin ready for the season. Any Ridgefield regulars gettin ready yet?
I drew the sat after thanksgiving. Always a good day for me.
I hope we avoid the ice this year.
Got a new job so I am hoping to get som huntin in.
Hope to see some familiar faces and some new ones this year.

This is my first year hunting. My friend is a regular out at Ridgefield and he got me to put in for the draws this year. We all (me, him, and his wife) happened to get drawn for Oct 23. Should be a fun day out there.
-
Good old spoonie hunts. To bad they didn't plant it like Sauvies Island where it sounds like artillery going off.
-
I hunt out there off and on through out the season. I usually don't put in for draws in the first period, to easy to get a blind with out one. I think I hunted out there about 10 times last year. For the record I never shoot spoonies out there... But there are a ton of them shoot out there. I for one am glad that don't plant it like sauvies.
-
We worked on getting Ridgefield to plant it for many years, but since they were a national refuge there were restrictions. We also tried to get more blinds build and were working to get blinds placed on Batchelor Island. Since I left the area I have not been involved in that process. The unfortunate part is that it would make it harder to get a blind, but the hunting would be a lot better. I never used to hunt the morning, but would come in for the afternoon hunts and was usually always limited out. It was an easy hunt on most occassions.

I have hunter there a few times with my cousin... I always liked the Full Plumage drakes spoons pretty cool looking..... Anyone know why there is so many of them? I'm not afraid to stack spoonies like cord wood... My motto is if it flyes it dies.... :P
-
The reason for the spoonies is the available food there fits there diet. I think the second reason is not every body shoots them so it becomes a safe place for them to return.

Agreed! Beautiful birds, in my opinion. My dad got a great looking drake out there one of the two times I hunted last year. I'll probably swing in a few times but didn't put in for draws as I totally spaced it :bash:

Oh, yeah, I'll be putting in for those for sure :)
I just meant to get some apps in for the October/November days and all of a sudden it was September 16th. I never can seem to remember the first application.
-
Most days I am there alone, if you guys are willing I am in a red 88 4runner...
-
We need to hook up this year. My brother moved to Mass. so I am huntin alone. The wife may come with me sometime but I be solo this year.
-
Okay c'mon. How was the opener.?
I was up staring at empty clearcuts, crawling through thick ***t and such.
How was your blue-bird day?
I might get out next tuesday.
-
Where were you at Fishn? Me and my buddies were up in the Washougal GMU. We have 3 blind picks on Saturday at Ridgefield. It will be my first time out there.
-
We were at the burn in Yacolt. Crawled out of a creekbed and 15 trucks were all lined up the road. people standin in the back with guns, people lookin in the brush. I thought we took a wrong turn and hiked to Kentucky.
We walked into the 7200 rd in Weyco by Lk Merrill. They are logging the 7200 at the Kalama river, so it is closed. Saw some track, but nothin else.
Next we went to Coweeman.. Too hot.
I could be available Sat. Help ya out a little. Show ya around. I just need a seat in a blind or doggy hole. :chuckle:
-
I got in blind 2 at about noon and finished with a limit at about 5:30. I think the guys that warded off the early season rusty shooting did well. I'll be there sat i have #5 pick.
-
I think that is the first limit I've heard of from blind 2.
Good job.
-
Goosegunner is a good hunter, and a great caller. There are tricks to use to do well in any blind, I have good days in many blinds, even the handicapped blind.
-
Yeh I talked with him a little.
How did you do Teale?
What the hey you doin in the handicap blind? I've seen you shoot. :P
-
I hunt with one of my buddies who can't really move around much, so when he gets the chance I take him to the Handicap Blind.
-
Yeh I know. I have seen ya. Hats off to ya.
-
Looks like I will be at the refuge sat and tuesday. Hopefully with a guy that has a pick Sat.
-
I have someone lined up for this Saturday (not that it may matter, I can't find my letter indicating my pick :'()
If I have any days I get a pick and find myself solo, you'll be first on my list, so long as you're willing to put up with a newbie!
-
So as I frantically look for the mail with my pick for tomorrow at Ridgefield, I'm trying to recall what it looks like. I seem to remember it just being a postcard, is that correct?
Thanks!
-
Yes, litttle yellowish post card.
-
They have your name at the window at the check station.
You can call the ridgefield office and they might be able to get you a copy, but I seen guys last year check in with no card.
I guess I be back at deer camp thies weekend, wife says she will get her deer.
-
Thanks...called them up and they emailed me a copy.
I gave up on deer yesterday. We were out there beating the brush pretty good for 5 days this past week up in 568. Were just seeing some does. Oh well, we have a cow tag up in 568 so maybe we'll have better luck then. Good luck on the deer!
-
We hunted hard all week.
I will prob. be at ridge on Tue.
-
Hows the numbers lookin?
Can't get the website up.
Might get tue and thur this week before work hell starts.
-
Hopefully things start really turning around at Ridgefield. Numbers seem to be pretty low so far (from what I hear).
Got the December card today. Bummed I only got 1 date, but excited it was #1 pick on 12/04.
-
I got the number 7 pick on 12/11.
I also have the #9 pick this weekend, so I hope some birds come down or come back.
Today i was in # 19. had open water, but nuthin flyin. blue bird day. i quit early.
the little mouse type critter that came in the blind had ice stuck to his back, poor little bugger. He looked colder than me. :chuckle:
-
My friend was out there on the 20th. I think they got 3 in their blind (2 hunters). Sounded like no one else was having any luck.
-
I got one pick for December #14 on 12/21. The hunting pressure may slow down now that goose is closed out there. >:(
-
Did they already meet quota???
-
Yes, they met the 5 bird quota. No more goose hunting at the refuge.
