Title: When to set up ground blind?
Post by: sticky on September 28, 2010, 09:32:28 AM
I am just getting back into deer hunting after ten years out of the game.  I have a good but small piece of land to hunt and I want to use a ground blind this year.  The question is how long do I need to place the blind before opening day?  I have a place along the edge of the tree line to place it and the blind shouldn't be out in the weather.  Any suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks.

Put it out as soon as you can but if it is going to be on public land it might walk away with someone else.   :dunno:

Yup, if it isn't tied down, expect someone to steal it

I'd suggest going the semi-perminant route and building several small blinds out of branches/limbs/etc. Depending on where you plan to hunt, there's a chance someone may be in one of your blinds opening day, but that's the beauty of making several. You'll always have one or two to fall back on if your other areas are getting too much pressure.  :twocents:

Good luck

:yeah: heck even tied down they will steal it :bash: maybe set in concrete they wont :chuckle: but i would use the other route if it is public land. heck even on private ground they will get riped off. we lost one about 2 years ago. :bash:

If you have, or plan on getting the type you can quickly/easily break-down and carry with you, it shouldn't be a problem. I just wouldn't leave it all by its lone-some  ;)

i will leave notice that if anyone is in my blind when i arrive there opening morning when "I" took hours to build it, i will clear the area of animals in one second with a few .38 special snubbie rounds into a stump.

I hope you were kidding with that comment...

I think my area is pretty safe, they would have to go through a gate on my property to get there.  Plus, the blind is a one person Ameristep that I picked up for $30.  Don't want to lose it, but I wouldn't be too bummed if I did. If I can deploy the blind and expect to use it effectively in the same day, I'll just pack it in and out each day.  It just seemed like setting it for a while might make the deer less suspicious.  Thanks for the input.  I'll yet you know if I have any luck.

nope, one way or another the animals will leave the area and i will ruin their day hunting as they did mine. i am an ass like that.
I will be building my blind with an injured spine, after long hours of scouting.
Nobody will reap the rewards from my hard work but me and the person with me.

You go Phish...

If it was me I would clear the target area you want to place the blind.  Then I would build up the area with limbs so that you can place your blind when you arrive.  That way it does not look out of place.

I have had luck setting up a ground blind and seeing deer within minutes. But, for best results it is better to set a ground blind up two to three months before you go to use it. Unfortunately, there are individuals who have poor values and ethics and will destroy or steal the blind. In one area I hunt non-hunters would relieve themselves in peoples blinds. I do have some tree stands set up on public land and I use heavy cable and security locks to help prevent them from walking away. I hope this helps and good luck.
