Post by: jordano on October 03, 2010, 07:23:41 PM

We got 1 fish Friday around 9...

Its hit and miss for me, some days I knock em dead, some days they have lockjaw.  This year has been a study in changing up what works for each day I fish.  So far this year I have used 50/50 wicked willies, bronze hammered spoons, eggs under a bobber, drifting eggs with a corky, my homemade heavy vibrax style spinners, chart maribou jigs and chart maribou big eye fly's.  I have caught fish on all of the above this year, but none of them have been consistant day to day as in the past.

You guys fishing the lower Skagit? I grew up between Concrete and Rockport. I know the upper river the best.  :)

I've been fishing upper river, Gilligan Creek Up and the Cascade.  I tried the lower river a few times earlier in the year just to get the boat out but have not figured that lower river out yet.

Upriver should be good in the morning.  This bit of rain we are getting today should help push some fresh fish up.  The barometer is going up as well.  I need to check the flow charts and see if I will need to go above the Sauk or I can save some gas and fish down from there.

I don't normally fish the Skagit, but I thought I'd pass on this little bit of info a friend told me tonight.  He said the nets have been in since Tuesday from Blake's up to Concrete.  If that's the case fishing will be tough.  Good luck to all.

Yea, talked to dad today. He said the river is up a bit and resembles Chocolate milk. The Sauk is dumping tons of silt.

Oh quit yer bitchin!   :chuckle:  I fished the Nooksack in the rain Saturday morning till almost noon where it actually still had a nice green color. By 4pm it was MUDSACK.   Now looks like the Tootle on May 18, 1980!

Rivers in good shape, but the Coho have lock jawed for me the last couple trips.  All I have caught is a cold.

Have not been keeping this thread updated very good.  River is blown now, before we got the heavy rain I went out a couple times, still having no luck on the coho.  I did hook up on two metalheads with the fly one day.  was able to get one in and release the other came off a couple feet off the bank.  I also hooked up on what I am pretty sure was a dog (early one I guess)  He broke off and my tippet felt like it went through a bandsaw.  I was supprised that I would hook up on a dog this early, especially using the fly I was using.  Not a fly I would assume to hook a dog on.  No Coho for the smoker but still a fun day, those metalheads sure like to run, got to break in the drag on my new fly reel.

ya I drive over it in Mount Vernon everyday... and it looks rather dark....  well good for you! keep it up! I am pretty much just in duck hunt mode right now unless we get 4 or so sunny days in a row then I might go cast my line a little...

Growing up on the upper Skagit, I think I burned myself out of fishing at a younger age. I need to get Dad's boat finished so I can get back out there again. I know once I wet my line again, I will be out there every chance I get.  :chuckle:

I haven't been able to get to the Skagit much this year as our foster child is really taking up my time.  But did manage a few hours on the upper river on Halloween.  I went to places I typically see coho rolling and jumping and didn't see anything.  Maybe it was the time of day I was there but it really looked empty.  Too bad the chum won't be open this year as I was hoping to take my kids.

Any word on our all mighty Skagit?  Hoping to get out tomorrow and try my new/used outboard and maybe wet a line.

Just a little update, lower river is coming back in shape, still colored up a bit.  Upper river is high but very fishable (according to my upriver eye's).  If the rain holds off and the temps stay down should be good in a day or two.  Let me know how it goes, I am heading over the mountain for the next 4 or 5 days so going to miss the window.
