Title: Who hunts Lincoln County?
Post by: GrainfedMuley on October 04, 2010, 06:59:50 PM
I don't even want to know anybodies honey hole. But I am curiuos who hunts Lincoln county and roughly where you are when you hunt and where you are from/live? Are you usaually successful? I am just curious because according to the game regs, Lincoln county has a fairly high success rate. So are you successful in Lincoln county?

My guess on why Lincoln county has such a high success rate: lots of private land. I hunted there last year, 3 of us, 2 deer down. On private land. The same property this year: 3 deer down, and only one more guy to hunt it... That's my take on it... There are a few plots of DNR land out there, and lots of farmers post "feel free to hunt"... Its not a county where one can just drive in on opening morning and hope to get into the deer...

Very true. I agree with everything you have said. I have hunted the DNR land but not for several years. I pulled a 23" wide 3 point off the Swanson Lake area in the mid 90's. Now days it get hammered opening weekend and everything gets pushed to private land. I will be NE of Davenport between Harker canyon and Mill canyon.

Swanson Lakes looks like a pumpkin patch on opening weekend.  I quit hunting that years ago since half of Spokane knows about it.

I have hunted 136 for a very long time. I can tell you it takes 2-3 years to figure out patterns, hot spots and where they always go at certain points of the day. Have you ever hunted Lincoln? Have you been to area before? Where have you been hunting? I personally have 6 honey holes for Lincoln. This deer was taken in Lincoln on the 4th of sept. This is a friend of mine that had never harvested a deer before, until now!!! I wont give you a sure thing, but if you shoot me an email I will get you in the action. There is a trick to hunting these mule deer. And if you don't know the trick, you will be like everyone else that goes out there, dumb hunting will get you nothing!!!!!!

I live here and hunt here but havent killed a buck here for 5 years cause all thats here is (small 1x1 and 2x2 mostly) and some 3's and 4x4, inmature bucks. This year all my bud's got there deer ( 4 out of us 5 got deer dinks) but they just want meat and a rack, not a mature buck.I'm the 5th guy waiting for that late hunt   ;) Good luck if you hunt here and want a good buck :twocents:

I personally don't belive that is true. 2 years ago I shot a real nice 4x5 that was 24" wide and he scored 149 5/8". I have seen several bucks just as big and even bigger. I don't know how you hunt, but there is some large bucks out there.

Lincoln County is big and I would agree with Bowhuntforever, there are a lot of dinks around.  Not saying there arent mature bucks but you will see a lot of dinks and barely legals

Did anyone see the pic at the to of the post! Does that mature 4x4 look like a dink??? If you are seeing dinks (i.e) immature bucks, then i just figured out where you hunt, and the type of hunter you are! My boots have 100's of miles on them! Hope you see a nice one from the truck! They are known to cross roads every now and then. Until then, spend all day looking at that spike and two point saunter up the shale rock hillside with your hunting Buddie WAITING for their big brother to jump out of thin air! And then!............You and hunting buddie go to where you saw the "dinks" the day before!!!!! DEER, DEER,DEER...............OH, never mind.......its that spike and 2 point from yesterday,.............."lets just watchem for a bit! Big brother might be with-um today"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yah that is funny. Even though I live and work on the wet side, my heart is still with the Inland Empire. Born and raise over there and will probobly retire over there also. I just couldn't find a decent paying job over there. Not like the one I have here.

I don't see anything spindly about the buck Yelp posted. That is about the same score as my 5x4 a couple of years ago. Nice buck Yelp. When I was a kid and hunted the county with my dad. There was an 18 year old boy who got his uncles deer rifle after he had passed. The first year he hunted he made the front page of the Davenport news paper. The buck he shot was a mature 4x4 that measured 29 1/2" wide. They are out there even though some people think there is nothing mature enough to shoot. It's a big county and tons of places to hide. Some places so thick that you can't walk through it.

Soooooooo, you don't hunt in this state? Where do you go? Northern centeral Saskatchuwan? I know of an old timer that shot a muley in the Methow valley back in the 70's and I took that rack to the soportsman show to have it scored.  It is a narly non-typical that scored 223 5/8's. At the time it was scored, it was #10 in the state record books. For Washington, that is a MONSTER. Ther are very large deer in this state. Over the last few years being on this forum I have seen huge deer that people have taken. For the record, I get that rack when he passes.

Hey, they were the ONLY town in Lincoln county to have enough boys to play 11 man football in the 50's and 60's. They had to go out of county to play there games. It's not a big news paper, but they have one.

Not trying to get you fired up, you bet there's big bucks in this state! A 150 class buck to an avid hunter is not really that huge. I would shoot one opening morning of any general season in this state, in fact I've never shot one that big here. Sorry to upset you, Yelps buck is awesome! But I bet he's killed several similar bucks.

I'm not a trophy hunter.I like the challenge of hunting but I mostly... like to eat them..so if its legal and I can kill it... I am grateful..I don't bitch..I have a garage full of horns. some I mounted and are in the house.  There are big deer in this state antler wise but I don't want to waste an opportunity at filling the freezer.

I used to hunt in Lincoln County in the late 90's and early 00's, and I have seen some TOADS both Muley and WT there.  I got a deer every year I hunted there.  My then hunting partner has taken quite a few VERY nice deer from there over the last 20+ years.  One WT he has measured out at 183 7/8"  Washington or not, that is a big WT!

Born and raised in Lincoln County.  Only open land is some school sections and the BLM ground.  The BLM ground is saturated with hunters.  95% of the county is private and mainly posted by the farmers.  They post it because hunters can't behave.  We spend at least half of the hunting season chasing down people who trespass, cut fences and poach.  Land owners in Lincoln County have a bad taste in their mouth with hunters from out of the area.  You should hear some of the stories they tell you when they are caught.

We have harvested many bucks as big or bigger than the last picture.  There are many big bucks north of highway 28, mostly Mulies.  There are Whitetails north of highway 2, from Davenport to the county line, mostly down by the river.

In the fifties there were three schools that played 11-man football.  Odessa, Davenport, and Wilbur.  I know because I play for Odessa.  Never lost a game in 1958 and 1959.  Even beat Shadle Park in 59.

WOW! that's cool. I was always told that as a kid and the story never changed as I grew up. So presumed it was true. That is about the same time frame my dad was a Davenport Gorrilla. I saw a pic of him in uniform with leather helmet and no face mask....I understand the feeling of somebody outside the area that does not have any connections. In general the public are pigs. They really don't care about anything but themselves. You are correct about the whities. I am north of hiway two and have taken three real nice whities. Thanx for letting me know about the 2 other teams that played 11 man football back then.

I've hunted here for years, and have seen deer that are absolutely HUGE. Were talking 200 plus inches and plus 270 lbs on the hoof. Yes there are a TON of small bucks, but that to me is always a great sign when you have a solid buck to doe ratio. The truly large mule deer are around and can be pursued if you know where they like to be when the presure starts. The cool thing about Linoln County is you never know if you will get a mule deer or whitetail, and there are opportunities for GIANTS either way you slice it. I hunt all public lands that anyone can access and see toads every year, and weather I used a rifle or bow I have never been skunked. If you put the effort in nessasary  out here, you will be successful for sure.

In the 20 some years I have been hunting the property I hunt. I have seen 3x 180"or better bucks. One was in the thickest deepest brush and timber areas where you literally can't get through. 2 of the bucks I saw were crossing wheat fields going from canyon to canyon. They were not together. There were two separate times.

I saw a 182" brute taken out at Bluestem in the back of a truck in Davenport one year. He was an very nice buck. The pic I posted of all the LC bucks I have. The mulley on the very far right next to the window was taken from Swanson Lake. He is a tall 3x3 that is 23" wide. Got him back in the early 90's. I have not hunted SL for 20 years.

Love that lower right 3 point mount position!!! those are all nice bucks, I've only hunted Lincoln County once, my first year hunting, camped at Porcupine Bay, shot a little 3 point on a sliver of state ground near the park. Got a ticket for forgetting to notch the month on my tag. Park Rangers also made us lock our guns in the cases while in the park and wrap a tarp around our hanging deer so no one could see it. Weird place for sure, haven't hunted it since, no care too...

You don't need to tell me to get away from  roads. I grew up in Odessa. There are few places my boots have not touched in Lincoln county. Public land that is. I have put my tag on a legal buck every year since 1998. Except for 2010 I was in Nebraska. All from Grant and Lincoln Co. Most hunters would be lucky to top 150" in lincoln county on public land.

The highest concentration of average bucks is probably between Harker Canyon and Mill Canyon.  VERY little pressure and lots of room to stretch the legs.

200" is a big stretch but there are plenty of 150-170" bucks that come out of Lincoln County.  Lincoln County is huge so it really depends on which part of it you are at in regards to trophy quality.

there are several remote areas in Lincoln county and there are places where the nearest road is easily 2 + miles or better. It depends what part of the county you are in.

I lived/hunted Lincoln County for 8 years, my point is that the vast majority of it is pretty flat and agricultural with roads within a mile or closer.  Nothing wrong with hunting close to roads as long as it is a good spot.  There are places in Lincoln County within 1/2 mile of major roads that hold good deer numbers

If everybody took the remote approach in Lincoln County, those "remote areas" would look just like Lone Pine Rd does in modern firearm season.

I know a rancher who has 23,000 acres bordering the north side of the Swanson Lake area....too bad I don't like any deer meat..

His place doesn't hold any game animals anyway  ;)

True, over the years there has been a couple of 180 + bucks around the Hawk creek area. I know somebody who owns a bunch of land that buts right up to Hawk creek. I have seen a lot of deer in there. Hawk creek is about 10 miles west of where I am.

I've been hunting lincoln county for years now on private property and we always shoot nice bucks out of there, i see 150" + deer taken out of there every year, the people who say otherwise have probably never hunted it properly. This is the one I shot last year, not a monster but a respectable washington mulie for sure

Here's an average Swanson lakes area buck.  Nothing like being out there in the scabs on opening morning.

No one is playing any games "on this forum". I was sincerely wanting to know how big he scored. I wanted to compare with my 159" Lincoln county buck.
