Hey guys.....what distress calls do you usually use for bear? I've never tried to call em in.....but figured what the hell, may as well give it a shot.
Thanks everyone
-
Rabbit, fawn, calf/elk all work.
-
we have always done well with fawn distress. if you are in a area that has a high elk population you can do very good with a calf elk call.
-
I use the rabbit..call
-
try and get a hold of bearman ric. he has production calls and custom calls for bear, bobcat and yotes. he can tune your call for bear calling. his website is rr.calls.com. he is a sponsor here. he is in michigan right now send him a email or give him a call. his calls are great. i have tried the store calls. but his are 100 times better. i have 4 of his calls :IBCOOL:
-
We've always stuck with the fawn call, if nothin else they'll call in a coyote :)
-
I've called in three with a javelina distress call. :chuckle: I like a really coarse call.
-
javelina distress? or javelina's demise?
-
distress...of course while I'm calling it sounds like he is in demise! :)
-
intresting, i have never heard a javelina distress call before. i have the javelina demise sound on my foxpro. it is a very raspy distress call.

Remember, animals are curious and will come to a variety of calls for a variety of reasons. Never be afraid of trying something new.

Here bear, here bear works well!! :chuckle:
-
I use all hand calls now,got rid of the electronics...cottontail,jack,fawn.But Im really like the cub sounds I do with my voice and a grunt tube
-

Was plannng on it. Pm your Address. Bobcat getter. Rick
-
For bear now I almost always use either Bearmanric's or Rainshadow's hand calls. Both make outstanding sounding predator calls and they both tune them nice and raspy for me.
-
Thanks for all the replies guys....might have to pick up some site sponser calls. Maybe the wife can get me a "Thanksgiving present" haha
-
Ive had them come in with (visually seen):
Cow elk,
Calf elk,
Rabbit Distress,
Coyote Distress,
Coyote howl/rabbit distress/coyote distress combos
Good luck with your calling!

yep for sure! one of the local guy has called cougars with a goat distress sound. you never know i also like the raspy calls over high pitch for bears and yotes. cats on the other hand seem to like the high pitched bird sounds. the medow lark is a killer ;)
-
I had bears respond to bearmanric's calls about a week ago, it was pretty cool.
-
I've had luck with "Primos Lil' Dog". I would like to try any prototype calls if anybody wants to send me one. Then I'd give you my
feed back. :chuckle:

Hi Ric when are you back in town? I still want to get one of your african horned howlers that I talked to you about at the BBQ this summer. I say african horned because I cannot remember what you called it.
-
Just Finished the acrylic Toneboard's yesterday. Have to make 12 of the Springbok Howler's when I get home. They do excellent Howl's. Campmeat don't know much about you. We will see when I get home. Wish I was bear calling. I'll figure something out when get home. Rick
-
Rick, I want one of those double reeds when you have any ready. Just let me know how much.
-
In a hour when Lee get's home he is going to teach me on the huge turret lathe how to start the toneboards. These are my new ones. Going to be sweet. I'm nervous but will be great to know how to. I've milled all my toneboards so far. These new Toneboard's will make Great bear call's. I'll know more on the double reed tone board soon. Byron south is checking them out for Mojo outdoor's. We only have a few left. Befor I left I got a 100 double Reed 1/2 rubber holder's. Will be working on double reed closed reed beer call's and coaxer's for bobcat. Rick
-
:)I have used and do use lots of Ricks calls, they kick butt.
Carl

Rick, my goto bear call is an older version of the Sceery Coarse Predator like shown in the image below. Having the reed cut the way it is allows for a lot of flexibility and variety of sounds. I would highly encourage that type of reed rather than a more traditional seperate slender reeds which are more helpful for producing howls or high pitched multiple animal distress calls.
Just a suggestion, it is a double barrel call and as such is fairly large. I had to grind down the mouth piece as thin as possible because it would cause my jaw to get fatigued after calling for a while. Just something to be aware of since I can't judge the size of your prototype.
-
Lets get together for some kitty callin Ric-I will take one of your new calls when you return ;)
-
Johnny stewart predator call works good, do not use the ones for bears, they do not make ANY vocalizations that even remotely sound like a bear.
-
Called my first bear in that bofire son got. It with with a Johnny Stewart pc 7. Using a raspy distress. cnc
Machined a new closed reed delrin call's today. Rick
