OK, really not an important thread here, but one with lots of pics of one deer. Here is whats goin down, Hunter-4-Life's wife drew Idahos unit 14 muley tag for this weekend :IBCOOL:, so like the good husband that he is, we have gone on two scouting trips to piece of property that he obtained permission for that hasn't been hunted in over 10 years. Each trip we have seen a lot of nice bucks, but one in particular has caught our eye, and we have seen him on both trips down there. His wife has decided that this is the buck she will shoot, when she sees him, or if she sees a bigger one first.
Now for your help, please for goodness sake, help settle the dispute that he and I are having over this deer. There seems to be some debate as to an estimated score on this deer, more importantly regarding the spread this deer has. We also have some debate as to his actual age. We will not tell you what we think. So please, you muley experts out there, tell us what you estimate his:
1. Antler width
2. Total Gross Score
3. Age
4. (for kicks) Dressed Weight.
Enjoy the pics, and if you know of any bigger deer in this unit, please feel free to share that info also. :chuckle:
-
Now out of Velvet when we saw him last weekend.
-
porn....no guesses :dunno: just drool everywhere I sure hope she gets him......
-
Gotta love that. Next is a field photo for next months POM. Goodluck.
-
kill him and let the tape tell the tale. big enough for a blacktail -hunter. good luck :twocents:
-
That's a great buck for sure I think. I am not a good scorer really but he may be 26 or 27 wide, not real tall and lacking mass. score wise I don't think he would be very high, but like I said he's great I'd take him for sure. He does not look to old either maybe 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 still young but very nice. Who knows when you get there you just may find a bigger one that him. Good luck hope to see the pics soon! ;)
-
thats is a great buck! but he sure looks jumpy for land that hasn't been hunted for 10 yrs :dunno: Good luck to the hunter
-
I suck at this for the most part but here's my guess. We'll let the muley junkies chime in. I think he's 28" wide. He's got weak fronts and not real strong backs but he does have long beams and width so I'm gonna say 168ish. I think he's probably 4-5 years old which I would not say is very young. As far as weight goes, I have no clue. I'm really curious to hear what the guys that really know this stuff have to say.
-
He looks like a good buck no matter what the score is.
Have a good time out there, hope you don't just focus on inches (not a flame at you).
-

Thats a good point. I would shoot that buck without even thinking about it with my late permit this year.

I agree

Not a problem. She is pretty dead set on taking this buck. She believes, and I agree, that there is something special about finding a buck months in advance, seeing him on numurous occasions, and having the opportunity to harvest that buck. To me it shows the respect and admiration she has for this majestic beautiful animal. We just want to see who is closer to being right. :chuckle:
On a side note, has anyone noticed how much bigger he looks in pick 1596 than the other buck. Granted, its a much younger buck, but still...
-
That little 4x4 has a lot of potential about 3 years from now.
-
My guess is 170ish, 26-27 wide, an 4-5 years old.
-

You dork! You cant guess! Thats Cheating!
-
28", body is not huge but the buck is a monster - shoot it and don't look back. Score ? Wouldn't know, wouldn't care. That's just me.
-
:o :o :o
Very Nice buck! He is a nice 27-28" buck. He has very semetrical sides which will help in Official Scoring. His back beams are each 9-10" long, and his fronts are 5-7". He doesn't appear to be very thick horned, but that isn't too big of an issue. I would guess him close to 180". A very nice buck. He will probably field dress at about 225lb. :dunno: After she shoots him, will you let me know how close I am. :dunno:
-
Nice looking buck. I'm just not seeing anything above 160. I think he'll be in that 28" range. Hope you guys put him down and worry about the rest later.
-
Mid to upper 170's gross. Very nice looking buck.
-
Score... :dunno:, big enough and definintly mature enough. I would say he is 5-6 years old.
-
I'd shoot him if he was half that size!!! Good luck!
-
26.5" wide. 163" gross. 4 1/2 years old...............might be 27" wide. :chuckle:
-
27 1/2" wide. Shooter For sure
-
Bigger than any buck ive ever killed! To me a shooter for sure! Not an expert judge ( ive been on a lowball streak so far this year), But I would estimate width between 26 and 28 inches. solid forks, but a bit weak in the front and mass is weak. I would estimate 163. Actual score TBD! Body Weight: Gonna need help packing! PS not trying to thread jack but if anyone has pointers on field judging muleys feel free I need all the help I can get.
-
26"-27" wide, 168"-170" gross, 4-6 years old. :twocents:
If she likes him that is all that matters!
-
I think we are all hitting pretty close to the same numbers. I am getting him at 26 or 27 wide, upper 160's gross score, 4 year old deer, can't give you a guess on the live weight (I've never weighed one)...
He's a great buck, and I'd fill my tag on him in any state...
-
Great pics, makes it bit easier. Im willing to bet he is 26 wide 4 1/2 year old. As far as weight goes you know he will be right at 275-300 alive. He will put on about 10% more by peak rut. he will score at about 160, maybe 170 green. Never the less, a great deer! He has diff genetics than his running partners, a few things stick out to me. The color of his jacket, no brow tines like the other 4x4 and diff facial structure! He is the elder in the herd, but that 4pt with brow tines will be a great deer next year. I have a feeling that big boy might be tough to catch up to or find come season. You have shown your hand to him twice now, I dont think he will be at the next poker game. Keep us updated!!!
-
The big buck has brow tines.
-
29 inch spread , 182 gross , 5 1/2 years old 180 lbs field dressed . If you give him two years he'll be a stomper , no way thats a 160 inch deer .
-

I'm gonna hold you to that when hunter4life's wife drops the hammer. :chuckle: Best of luck guys and gals landing this fine trophy.
-
i dont see 180 just for the lack of mass. I just dont see 180 gross. Are out of e-burger coachcw?
-
Well hopefully we can catch up with him opening morning on sunday. Once he is down I will report back with all the measurements. But I am just not seeing 180" either. Like said above the deer has no mass.
-
I suck at this but I've been practicing. I would say 27-28" wide, gross score of around 165", 5 1/2 years old. 240 lbs. on the hoof.
-
166 1/8 score
4 1/2 year old
28 1/4" wide
158 lbs of hanging meat.
Give or take a little.. :chuckle:
-
thats a pretty good guess if you ask me
-
No i'm from the wet side , I mainly hunt east and id . mt . or. bc. col. I just think you will be a little surprised if he's 5 1/2 his ears are like 22 he looks to be four inches side of his ears the fronts look a little weak . I have two 160 bucks haning here in my shop and that buck would crush them . shoot him then we will see.
-
I think the buck is 25'' wide, will score 165ish, and weighs 150 lbs, skinned, on the rail at the butcher. Just for fun, I posted my guess before I read any of the others.
-
No way 180. This is what a 180 would look like.
-
I don't know. I just want to post in this thread so that I make sure to see this thread when the kill shots are posted. :)
-
Wastickslinger, that is a good example of what a 180 buck would look like indeed.
-
wack did you kill that buck?
-
Wastickslinger, that is a good example of what a 180 buck would look like indeed.
:yeah: He probably gets tired of holding his head up with all that extra weight on there. :o
-
wastickslinger i think that buck is closer to 185! nice pictures!
-
I would say closer to 185" as well
-
I guess I'm laying my balls on the vise we will see , please kill him . Maybe I'm better at judging elk.
-
I guess I'm laying my balls on the vise we will see , please kill him . Maybe I'm better at judging elk.
Me too! But, I am a couse whitetail hunter from southern arizona, so everything looks big to me. Just one of these days I want to be right instead of hunter4life...may never happen. He is pretty good at this guessing stuff. :chuckle:
-
25" wide. 154" gross. Really nice buck, but if you are going for score, that front end and mass just kill him.
-
I thought someone dropped you on your head JJ as I was looking at wasstickslingers 180 buck. I rarely get underscored. Then I realized there was another buck in the thread. Yep, a 155 deer and a 180 buck if not 185.
-
165.
Why does everyone measure a buck by the outside spread? The inside one is the only one that counts.
-

That actually happened...... ;)

165.

Because when someone asks how wide a buck is, they are talking about the outside spread. I know that it doesn't count towards the score, but it is another way of describing the size of an animal. For some people, width has milestones(like a 30"er) that are as important as score milestones(like a 180"er). I am not as picky, and will shoot anything that I think looks nice.
-
i'd like to see your score sheet if you get 155 , his rear forks look pretty good that second buck i'll bet goes 190-195.
-
Width is a very low factor on a gross score, dont get me wrong a wide buck looks awsome but the mass measurements make up the major factor followed by main beam lengths and g2 lengths, but none of it matters on this deer he looks awsome and I hope your wife gets a crack at it. That would make some good memories and stories. The day my ol lady shoots a bigger buck than me I will be more happier than if I had shot it :)
-

I don't think that is the first time you have questioned my scoring........ :chuckle:
Mass - 32" (real weak here)
MB - 41" (that is generous - the one beam is most likely 19")
G-2 - 28" (14" aside is liberal)
G-3 - 17"
G-4 - 13"
Inside - 22"
If you want to give him a couple for G-1's.......155" gross. Right in that ball park......
-

You call me Wasstickslinger on purpose. >:( :chuckle:
-
I think that name fits u better. You need 2 change it! :)
-

funny
-
jj no ofence to you your deer knowlge isn't in question here. I my have figured to much spread credit but with real weak mass score i still have him at a solid 170 , I hope we get to see. good luck to the hunter . I'd for surley pull the trigger.
-
25" wide. 154" gross. Really nice buck, but if you are going for score, that front end and mass just kill him.
I think this guy nailed it, but I'd shoot that smaller 4x just for his freakishly long brows, that's how much I love the trash.
-
I think most of you guys are being very conservative.

You are putting too much credit in mass. Length of main beam and length of points is where score adds up. Granted mass helps but I wouldn't say it is the major factor.
This buck grosses 187 and it doesn't have a lot of mass. (pay no attention to the dork holding the deer)

Wastickslinger that buck you posted is pushing 190 gross. Where is he?! :chuckle:
-
Face it stickslinger, you are a has been.
I hope she gets that buck. I'd hammer it in a heartbeat even at 155.
-
Face it stickslinger, you are a has been.
I will take my ball and go home if you guys dont start playing nice. I bet Casscade hunter would appreciate me on his site.
-
For the record I stole the pictures from 509er. Everyone should PM him and he will tell you where to hunt.
-
You guys crack me up! I'm sticking to my guns on 163 gross. jj might be closer at 155. I bet we will see a happy medium in the middle. ;)
-
I really hope she shoots it! Not just so we have a score but because it is an awesome feeling to scout a buck, watch his moves in the summer, take photos and then connect. Something I know nothing about. I do all the scouting, watching their moves, take photos. BUT then I shoot the first legal buck I see. :chuckle:
Go get him!!!
I am sticking to 168 gross.
-
I Love This Buck! I Can Not Wait To Shoot Him On Sunday! This Buck Seems To Have My Name Written All Over Him! I Am Super Stoked And For All That Are Asking I Really Dont Care What His Size Is I Am Going To Shoot Him Anyways. . . .Unless Of Course Something Bigger Walks Infront Of Me! HEHEHEHEHEHE!!!!

Yes i am right there with you wastickslinger. Its my wife that is going after him. We are leaving tomorrow morning to head down and set up camp. Then hopefully we will be able to find him tomorrow night and watch him bed down so we know where to be at first light Sunday.
-
Get him Mrs. hunter-4-life! Thanks for being a fun guy and having a good attitude throughout this thread. :)
-
good luck! I just want to know the outcome and see some pics.
-
You all will be the first to know. I sure hope she gets him. She is going to be spoiled because this will be her second buck ever. the first one was a little whitetail spike.
-
Spike X 2 Thank You. . . . ;)

And there she is, my wife the soon to be big buck killer
-

-
170 will be tough... I say mid 160 deer. thin
-
I'll throw my :twocents: in to before they get back with the official results! Helluva a buck!
5.5 year old
26.5" spread credit
155" gross
130# of wrapped meat
Good Luck!!!!
-
Mains - 19"+21" - 40"
G-2 - 15"+16" - 31"
G-3 - 8"+9" - 17"
G-4 - 7+6" - 13"
Inside - 22"
Mass -31"
154" gross
-
Heres my guess.
M- 24.5 & 21.5
G2- 14.5 &14
G3-9 & 8.5
G4- 5.5 & 5.5
Spread- 23.5
Mass-30
Gross-156.5
I don't think his G1's are a true inch so i didn't give him credit. That hurts his mass a little and obviously a couple inches of length. I figure him just under 160 if those eyeguards are an inch.
-
Totalintent shot this buck this morning! Will post pics when we get back. She made a helluva shot!
-

164 3/8 low guess
169 6/8 high guess
Congrats on a nice buck.
-
He's a great buck,But his fronts mess him up alittle, i say 165 give or take a couple inches. I would whack him in a heart beat :bfg:
-
I suck at scoring, but I have to say he looks wider than I initially thought. I'll guess him at 160.
-
He's a dandy buck , Congrats . I'm sure I was High his spead looked better in the live pics , ill eat my shoe . Still I wouldn't have hesitated a second on pulling the trigger . Great photos and great looking deer country .
-
Congrats on a fine trophy. A text book example of how doing your homework pays off! Great job, again!
-
I never care about antler/horn size. You can't even make soup with em :bdid:.
What did he dress out at. How much meat did ya get? That and the fact that she shot a very nice buck is what matters. Bottom line, tag filled.
-
what a deal a true trophy buck, congatulations how wide is it ? i bet your glad he stayed around ,good deal.
-
Nice Work!! I am glad to see all the hard work pay off! That's a great buck! My guess is ( 163 )
-
good job lady that's a fine buck! glad it all worked out for you ;)
-
Huge congrats that buck is awesome. Thanks for posting the pics.
-
Very nice buck!! Great job and congrats on a successful hunt!
173, 29 3/4 wide
-
My guess is a little "rare"! Wrap those backstraps with bacon and brush with garlic olive oil and set them on the BBQ about 10 minutes a side and you will have another trophy. Get that beautiful buck mounted to remind you of the backstraps, lol.
Thanks for all the pictures and great job
-
I am sticking with my original guess; about 26 wide, upper 160s gross score, 4 1/2 year old buck.
-

Glad you had good weather and a great hunt. Now, throw a tape on that thing and settle the spread/score argument before we kill each other... :chuckle: :chuckle:
Congrats on a great buck!
-
Nice animal, I will low ball it a little in score and say 152 and a spread of 24 6/8
-
156 and 25" spread Great pics. Can't wait for the story
-
163 & 27.5
-
156 3/8 27.5 spread
-
Well how wide is he and what did he score.
My guess would be 27" maybe 28" and 164
-
great job! It was a heck of a hunt and and a heck of a deer, I appreciate you letting me come great shooting! my guess is 164 and 28 wide ;D
-

-
Hey wheres that story???
-
You know the drying time is going to cause those antlers to shrink. Lets hear the story and score :chuckle:
-
Well did this buck ever get scored?
-
26" wide
159" net
7 1/2 y.o.
175 lb dressed
-
Still waiting. :spank_butt:
-
Hey, I live close to this area and hunt some areas with similar genetics. From what I have seen, that is a 4 year old deer scoring just shy of 160 and about 25 inches outside, 22 inside. I got one similar this year with slightly better front forks that scored right at 160. For an area that has not been hunted in ten years, there should be some five or six year old deer, if you think you can find this buck later, then it might be wise to keep looking around. There are a couple 180 inch plus bucks that come out of that unit every year on public ground and the bucks will start showing signs of rutting this week, so if there are a lot of does in the area, the older bucks might appear. If this is the biggest buck you have seen and she is happy with him, then I guess score doesn't matter.
-
That's cruel to leave us all hanging! What was the score??? :P
Mike
-
great job! It was a heck of a hunt and and a heck of a deer, I appreciate you letting me come great shooting! my guess is 164 and 28 wide ;D
Is this the answer? I just assumed it was since he was there. :dunno:
-
Sorry guys! Unfortunatly, this dude got dropped at the taxi before I could put the tape to him, but I do know he was about 27 wide. Again hate to leave you hangin, but...
-
No worries DB, though I'm sure ur taxi could score him for ya! ha if not again no worries and congrats again on the great buck!
Mike
